Wrong. They need to expand their game base rather than just rehashing the same old Mario and Zelda titles over and over again.
Which if you paid attention at all to E3, they are. Bayonetta 2, Devil's Third, Splatoon, Xenoblade Chronicles X, Sonic Boom X, Actually trying something different with Zelda.
To be fair, Bayonetta 2 will probably follow most M-Rated beat em up titles on Nintendo consoles in selling poorly. The market of gamers that like games like Bayonetta 2 are usually PlayStation owners. That's why I'm gonna be keeping an eye on Tokyo Game Show this year.

Devil's Third was supposed to come out 3 years ago on the PS3/360. Probably won't sell well for the same reasons Baypnetta 2 won't sell well.

Splatoon actually looks like a lot of fun. I just hope it has enough content to keep it from getting boring quick seeing as how its MP focused.

Xenoblade Chronicles X also looks really good. The 3DS can't have all the good JRPGs now can it?

Sonic Boom is something I wouldn't place any bets on being good considering 3D Sonic games by and large have never been good.

I like that they are going in a new direction with Zelda, I just hope the story arcs aren't another [get 3 key items], [get Master Sword], [get 6 Medallions], [kill Ganon] flow.

I hold my breath til all of these games come out of course. I also maintain that Nintendo's 3rd party support is still needs major work. They should be throwing money at Capcom to finish Megaman Legends 3.

I've not picked up a next-gen console yet, because I can't afford the new generation at the moment. That being said, I've got my eye on the Wii U > PS4 > Xbone, in that order. Frankly, I've gotten bored with the hyper-realism tone of the last generation of consoles and am looking for a breath of fresh air.

The Wii U seems to be that. I couldn't be more excited for the new Zelda game though. But yeah, the console did launch with a paucity of games that made me scratch my head a little.

In my opinion the talk of the Wii U going under and Nintendo releasing a new console sooner is nonsense, for two basic reasons.

1. To give up on your console after only 3 or so years would destroy consumer confidence. Existing Wii-U owners will feel burned, and many likely won't buy the next one. I mean seriously that would be a huge shit storm.

2. Relating to #1 above unlike Sega 10-15 years ago Nintendo has more than enough money to ride this out, with the previous console being a massive success and the 3DS currently going strong.

Maybe it will catch up, maybe it won't, but either way Nintendo needs to keep things on schedule and rather than just pull the plug early they need to learn from their mistakes for the next launch. Delaying the launch until they have a go-to game like Mario Kart or Smash Bros would be a good idea. They made New Super Mario Bros 3D first, but the market has obviously responded better to Mario Kart.

Are you suggesting that only homosexual males are "high-functioning"? Or that "high-functioning" heterosexual males all have the same taste in women (small-breasted)?

Or did you just want to say something crappy about "dudebros", or whatever you prefer to call them, despite it having nothing to do with the conversation? What is the purpose of this sentence?

OT: Nintendo cannot win without 3rd party support this cycle. It was fine when they had 10 year-old tech with a cheap, gimmicky controller, but not now. Sega, by itself, doesn't count as "third party support". Last console cycle, Nintendo sold way more consoles than anyone else, but the machines aren't where the money is. Licensing, game sales, THAT'S how you make money. What was the attach rate of the Wii? 5? The 360's attach rate was 6 during the month of its launch.

The PS4 has already sold more consoles than the WiiU despite being unable to boast as large a catalogue of games. Why? Because the public knows Nintendo's game. They've been pissing off third party publishers since the NES, and now they have only their own franchises to push, and it just won't be enough.

I will say that Nintendo seemed to have much more vitality during E3 than they have had in the last couple years, mainly due to the fact that they have some exciting games coming out soon.
Once that Zelda game hits I think we will see WiiU unit sales shoot up. I say this as someone who was very down on Nintendo's chance's this generation, but as they say, it's all about the games.

While i don't know how much it helped, Wii actually had a lot of third party support, there are tons of games, a lot of shovelware and casual games but there's also a lot of brilliant games out there. It had a lot more third party support than the N64 ever did. I'm also inclined to say that it got more than Gamecube, but i'm not that familiar with the library of the Gamecube. Just wanted to point out that it got tons of games (As i noticed earlier this year when i actually started to explore the depths of the Wii catalog).

But they seem to have lost it on the WiiU, one could hope that it would return if the sales starts to pick up a bit. If they have a strong 2014, we might see more than indie developers creating games for the WiiU. So far they will have to make due with first party and indies. I just wish they would make a better effort to advertise the indies, they always seems to go unnoticed when people talk about the WiiU library.

What an idiotic quote from them. The WiiU has been out for an extra year as nearly everyone posting in this thread seems to know.

May is the first month that the WiiU has sold more than any other 8th gen console since the PS4 and XBO launched. For the past 7 months, the PS4 and XBO have regularly sold twice or more the numbers of the WiiU. In April the XBO sold 100k more units than the WiiU and May they traded places. But both the XBO and PS4 are selling at a much faster rate than the WiiU. Sorry, but the mere fact that one has been out longer doesn't make it 2nd place.
It really depends on what happens in the future, if it keeps outselling XboxOne from now on and throughout the year, then they will stay in second place, it doesn't matter that they had headstart, what matters is what happens now and in the future. I don't know what effect Mario Kart and future releases will have on sales, it could continue to be strong or it could drop below XboxOne, who knows. But the thing is, if they manage to continously boost their sales, they can still compete.

Personally i don't really care what place they are in, i just hope they can keep up and create a platform that is suitable for niche games and the like. I don't need the big AAA games, there are other venues for those, i'm more hoping that they could create a console equivalent of the DS, a place for stuff like Layton, Phoenix Wright, Srpgs and Jrpgs and quirky action games.
Yes, if it keeps doing what it has done in that one month then it absolutely could become the king. But one month isn't enough to wave our hands around declaring that the WiiU is in 2nd place. That had one major release and we need to see if it sticks. We also had the XBO announce a cheaper kinect-less console coming out so sales may drop in anticipation.

Second? With what? A few recycled games and Mario Builder (or as normal people have known it for over 20 years now - a level editor)? So people will buy an inferior platform because it has Mario Kart 8 (or among normal people known as "that same racing game released for the 8th time), and Super Smash Bros (an inferior fighter to other titles)? Really? Dont get me wrong, those games are fun, no doubt about that. But you dont buy the same movie 8 times, do you? Or the same book? You definitely dont buy the same song 8 times. So why buy the same game 8 times?!
You're absolutely right. I can't think of anyone who saw Star Wars: Episode IV and then when on to watch Star Wars: Episode V. And NONE of my friends who read Harry Potter and the Philosopher's stone read ANY of the other books in the series! Preposterous!
Is this for real? Are you really blindly comparing stories to game mechanics?! o_O

If you find his comparison unacceptable, then let me point you to three [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_%28video_game_series%29] perfect [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madden_NFL] examples [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Call_of_Duty] that disprove your point. People definitely do buy yearly rehashes of the same content, and you can bet your bottom dollar that if these games were only on 360 and PS3 but not PS4 and XB1, they'd still buy them. Inferior console or not: these games move units.

(To disprove your point further, I (as a well-informed consumer) recently bought a Wii U with the sole purpose of playing Nintendo first party games including MK8, Smash, Super Mario, Zelda, et al. I want to see the data and numbers that Reggie is making this claim off of, but I can most certainly see how Nintendo might be doing better than most would think.)

Have you looked at Call of Duty's sales figures recently? Nintendo adds more new meaningful content and more significant mechanics to each single Mario Kart entry than Activision does over the course of three or four Call of Duty games, and yet Call of Duty sells like hotcakes. It just astonishes me that people criticize Nintendo for supposedly rereleasing the same game over and over again, when that's virtually all the AAA factories know how to do.

On topic: I'd love to see an accurate chart with life-to-date sales figures over time for all three consoles. I imagine VGChartz has something, but I've heard their numbers are less than reliable.

P.S. Thanks

The short bust of (justified) interested in the Wii U I doubt will lead to long term gain over Xbox One.

Xbox One will last a while in this generation, the Wii U won't.

I like the Wii U and will most likely end up getting one this year, but I can't see them ending in anything other than third place.

I was merely comparing the majority taste of gamers to the majority taste of heterosexual males with an evidently failed attempt at humour. However, i can see i have offended you. Depends. Halo 4 was the comeback for the series yet it sold less than half the amount Halo 3 did (7 million as opposed to 14.5). I think Halo 5 would have to be incredibly popular amongst the fanbase to get people to buy a whole new console just for it. Hell I would have even bought it had the Halo bundle not been announced.
Even if that number halves again, selling another 3.5 million Xbones because 1 new game came out is gonna be significant for MS.
True enough, though I imagine the number to be further reduced by the fact that to get that one game you have to add £350-£425 to get it. Still I do agree that it will sell the Xbox One a bunch, but I doubt it will be enough to stop the Wii U's slow burn from staying in a solid second place.
Still, it should be interesting, and we can only speculate.

Maybe Halo fans in general will love it and spread the word. Maybe it'll flop bigger than Halo Wars did, who knows.

The Xbox was as much of a 'failure' in the east as the Gamecube was in the West... even though over 12m Gamecubes were sold in the US alone.

It wasn't as big of a failure as many would have you believe. The clear winner of that generation was the PS2 but the other consoles did about as well as each other.

I'd hardly call 22m units "abysmal" for that generation, nor would I call the original xbox sales of 24m abysmal, everyone wanted a PS2.. there was no way around it.

And can we not forget that the PS3 was widely regarded as a complete failure for several years and now it's lifetime sales are higher than the "winner" of the last gen, the Xbox 360.

True. Nintendo loves kids, kids love Nintendo. Also for any parent with an actual brain its the reasonable game console to start them out on. Nothing too violent, cheapest out of them, games look colorful and inviting. Add in Super Smash Bros just before Christmas and you have the potential to move some major units. Especially if they have a smash bros bundle that includes at least one amiibo.

You were assuming that I didn't consider the Xbox a failure too. I do. And it is. And I thought it was considered as such by most people. The reason people don't hate on it was that Microsoft were launching a new console and trying to penetrate a well worn market to establish a base for the franchise, which they succeeded in doing. It doesn't do Nintendo's street cred well that the oldish console manufacturer remaining got beaten by Microsoft's failed initial attempt to penetrate the market.

The Xbox and Gamecube were beaten by an unprecedented amount of units, there hasn't been such clear losers compared to the winner in any other previous generation. A good measuring stick for just what a failure they were, is the fact that 2nd and 3rd place of our previous generation sold over 3x as much as the Xbox and Gamecube did. The N64 was not a successful console, being soundly trumped by the Playstation but it managed to sell a good 50% more than the Gamecube. Another even better measuring stick is that the PS4, in less than 1 year has sold almost 1/3 of the Gamecube or Xbox's total lifetime sales.

I also very much doubt that the Wii U is the same situation as the PS3. For starters, the PS3 had good access to third-party titles and support by publishers all through the period that it was failing.

Secondly, by the 6th quarter in it's launch cycle the PS3 had sold 12 million units. The Wii U in it's 6th quarter has sold 6 million. In fact in the 6th quarter of it's life cycle the PS3 sold as many units as the Wii U sold in the entire year after it's launch. And the 6th quarter is January-March, which is often a pretty slow quarter. For comparison, it it's 6th quarter the Wii U has sold 0.31 million units, which is less the average number of PS2s sold in a quarter in 2012 (.6 million a quarter).

Thirdly, thanks to the Wii's excellent ability to serve a new gaming market and it's inability to satisfy the 'normal' demographic, the PS3 was competing in a two horse race. The Wii U is competing in a 3 horse race.

Fourth, if the Wii U were to gain third-party support, the third-party games would be noticeably inferior on the Wii U unless the third-parties spent a lot of time designing games around the Wii U's controller, which they have no incentive to do. Also, when designing any multiplayer third-party titles developers would have to design their games controls around Wii motes or further restrict their market by demanding that people buy peripherals.

If Nintendo try hard, I believe the Wii U can be a Gamecube. The Gamecube was by no real measure a successful console, however it did please the people who owned it, provided that they were satisfied by Nintendo games above any other. This is awesome news because it means that the people who bought a Wii U don't have to be burned by their decision, unlike some of the people who bought a Wii early on hoping for third-party support. It absolutely sucks to get your hopes up for something and having them disappointed, so I really do hope that Nintendo try very hard to make sure this is a Gamecube situation, and I hope that they make enough money from the first-party software sales (because what else will people be buying?) to make it financially successful. That way it's practically guaranteed that Nintendo will continue to support their fanbase who've never given up by them.

But I can't see a situation where the Wii U can feasibly pull a PS3 nor can I see a world where I could recommend it to people who don't adore Nintendo games. It sucks, and it's weird that Nintendo have failed to provide adequate third-party support, since the time I was first learning to read, but that's how it's gone and for some reason it looks like there's no sign of this turning their track record around.

Nintendo haven't managed to attract the 'core' gamer demographic since the SNES which was before I was born. It's unreasonable to think they might now when all the signs suggest they won't. Of course if they manage to find a new demographic again with the Wii U, which is completely possible, then that would change everything.

It seemed clear that Nintendo was counting on Ubisoft and, EA during the early months of the Wii U's life too...sadly they both kind of ducked out on Nintendo because the U wasn't selling like gang-busters right out of the gate. Hopefully the U will pick up steam in the same way that the 3DS did during it's earlier years. The games shown off during E3 definitely look promising...and Splatoon looks like it started out its life as an answer to the Mario Paintball we're all guilty of joking about for the bast decade.

so you managed to sell LESS than PS4 even thought your console is out for 3 times LONGER, and you boast about it? getting really desperate arent you?

Also notice the continuos ignorance of thinking consoles live in a bubble. they dont. there may be 3 horses racing around, but theres also the PC Car driving around and the Mobile plane flying by. Meanwhile handheld carriages managed to outrace the horses that seem more interested in biting eachother than racing.

Well of the three, they certainly have the more interesting range of games.

Which is really quite sad now that I think about it.
