I appreciate what this means, but its starting to be more of an inconvenience to the people who use them, especially since most dont really care about politics.

Now if Forbes, or the stock market blacked out, that would carry more significance.

Hey how about we protest shark finning by wasting electricity, because that's what shark finning is all about, wasting electricity.
What do you mean? SOPA could potentially close down all those sites just like the protest demonstrates, they are completely related. Instead of your shark fin analogy, it's like showing you how much you value food by going without it for a day or so, this protest is trying to show you how important a free internet is by demonstrating how inconvenient it would be to have such heavy regulation.
Well put. The shark analogy sort of illustrates a misunderstanding of the point.

Of course, the fact that sites like The Pirate Bay have announced their intent to join the blackout shows that not everyone who opposes it gets the point, either.

And really, isn't that the best any of us could hope for?

Congress and the Senate can do whatever they want. The Administration has already said it WILL NOT sign the bill into Law (this is why it was shelved). So as long as Obama is president, then there is NO reason to even continue the discussion.
Politicians lie, and Obama has even just in the last few months signed a law he said he would veto. Relying on him alone to stop this would be just about the stupidest way I can think of to fight it.

So for all you SOPA haters, then you have 2 options...Vote Obama, or vote Ron Paul.
But mostly vote Obama. I'm too keen of the idea of a Republican in the White House.

In all honesty, ANYONE we put there who isn't Nathan Fillion is going to be a complete tool. All voting is anymore is choosing the lesser of two evils.

That is partly the point. It is a pain in the ass, now imagine if SOPA passed and that was how it was. No more wikipedia at all, wouldn't that be MORE of a pain in the ass? If even this small SOPA support blackout is such a pain in the ass to everyone, imagine how bad it'd be when SOPA actually passes and sites start getting blocked for real.
The idea of not caring about politics being a reason to avoid it, the thing is, you SHOULD care about politics. The apathy most people feel towards politics is part of the reason why we have so many douchebags in office.

Bluntman, the president said he wouldn't sign the law AS IT IS, not that he would NEVER sign it. And relying on the government to do what you want, without giving them feedback, seems to be against the basic principles of democracy.

Presumably just how Obama said he wouldn't sign the NDAA.

Besides. If it passes with a large enough majority, even if he does veto it, Congress can essentially veto the veto. That's why that appropriations bill with the rider that effectively put the last nail in the coffin of Habeas Corpus managed to pass, despite his initial plan to veto it; at that point, it would be law whether he signed it or not.

Well, I'd say it's more than political. Plus, people who don't go to websites like this and spend lots of time on the web aren't aware of SOPA, because a lot of news stations support it, so aren't covering it because they know it's bullshit and will piss people off.

When you consider the bill would blast this site, and many others like it, into oblivion (no Elder Scrolls jokes here), it would be rather moronic to call them "tools".
I make it a policy to put a lower limit on the quality of comment I respond to.

With that said I was originally just going to ignore Regnes.

I would suggest you do it too :p. If people can't comprehend the simple mechanics behind it they probably aren't going to grasp any points you make.

Wikipedia Blacks Out -> News Finally Mentions Sopa -> People who watch news now know what Sopa is -> Tons of these people use the internet and for once would be affected.

Unlike the TSA, this is a problem that you couldn't easily avoid.

It makes it easier to notice the main content of a page with the contrast.

And I'm not sure on the actual chances, but the fact that it got as far as it has is disturbing to say the least.

No. It's not.

That news article says that the creator of the bill released a press release stating that he wanted to vote on it in February.

That is like a 4 year old saying "Is Not!" It means nothing. Congress shelved the bill - HE can do nothing at all to change that.

So yes - this protest comes one day after the bill was already shelved for the foreseeable future, and is therefore pointless.

I signed the petition anyway. Good to keep my representative informed. But the bill is dead people - YOU are now giving that idiot press by freaking out about it.
