EXAMPLE: http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Skyrim

disable java in your browser and it should work
try -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page

can't guarantee that for other wikis
Works for main site, but not for others (disabling Java removes the SOPA banner, but you just get a blank, black page).

Damn. I needed to look up some stuff on the Skyrim wiki. **sigh**

I appreciate them making a point. Even if there are greasemonkey scripts and other tricks to get around it, you still have to consciously look for them, which means the blackout does not fail its purpose. Unfortunately, not being a US citizen, there's little I can do to help.

Two important details:

1. SOPA was shelved(but by no means dead), PIPA was not. PIPA is the Senate's version that is still being considered.

2. A majority vote can overrule the presidential veto. If the bill was to pass by such a mechanism or just pass as is, the last recourse would be the Supreme Court. The system does have some checks and balances, the catch is someone has to initiate them most of the time.

What i dont get is why they are STILL protesting SOPA..It was shelved days go and NOT being voted on.
Yes it is being voted on!
Keep up with the news in future before posting.
No. It's not.

That news article says that the creator of the bill released a press release stating that he wanted to vote on it in February.

That is like a 4 year old saying "Is Not!" It means nothing. Congress shelved the bill - HE can do nothing at all to change that.

So yes - this protest comes one day after the bill was already shelved for the foreseeable future, and is therefore pointless.

I signed the petition anyway. Good to keep my representative informed. But the bill is dead people - YOU are now giving that idiot press by freaking out about it.
Even if you are right about SOPA, PIPA is still alive and well, with a vote planned for the 24th. I wouldn't call it pointless.

It's merely a taste of whats to come if SOPA is passed. Sometimes messages need to be hard hitting.

Point taken.

Although, as I noted above, that is why I signed the petition anyway. I just think it would help if the protestors changed their banners to read PIPA instead of SOPA (which is, for all intents and purposes, dead).

Well this protest certainly did its job, even if some of the major sites didn't participate their numbers are dwarfed completely by the numbers the porn sites will be raking in, I just *ahem* discovered that some pornographic sites are also helping spread awareness of the SOPA issue.

And in doing so they have joined the ranks among the biggest tools protesting SOPA for the dumbest reasons conceivable.

Hey how about we protest shark finning by wasting electricity, because that's what shark finning is all about, wasting electricity.
SOPA gives more power to the huge companies that already abuse the living shit out of the power they already have through thanks to bills like the DMCA.

Giving them the power to shut down sites that they so much as think is infringing any sort of copyright without any trial or due process, is just unbelievable stupid. They will abuse this. They have proven that they will gladly abuse their power. The last thing we need to do is give them more, which is why these online protests are happening.

Well played, Escapist.
Is it wrong that I am absolutely loving this background?

To anyone who knows, what are the chances of this actually going through? I have not been following this particularly closely. I probably should have...
The chances are very, very good. Though after all these protests, hopefully things change. But the MPAA, RIAA, and others who support the bill are putting a shitload of money into getting SOPA/PIPA passed (makes you wonder, if piracy is hurting them so bad, where are they getting all the money to throw at SOPA/PIPA?).

Basically, Hollywood and the like are throwing lots of money to get these passed, and it seems to be working pretty well for them.

Unless you count the new vote day in the beginning of February. This is what they do, backpaddle, regroup, rewrite (PIPA anyone ?) and keep voting on it until they get the votes they want.
Congress and the Senate can do whatever they want. The Administration has already said it WILL NOT sign the bill into Law (this is why it was shelved). So as long as Obama is president, then there is NO reason to even continue the discussion.
That is, unless the bill goes back to Congress and they vote again on it. If the bill gets a 2/3 vote, it gets passed regardless of what the Executive branch has to say about it. That's called checks and balances.

Wikipedia doesn't want to stop you from circumventing their ban. It says in the like FIFTH question on the FAQ about SOPA how to disable their blackout. They have no qualms with you avoiding the blackout to look at info. Also, as stated, mobile sites work fine too.
