Right... I decided to re-watch some of the promotional videos. Bethesda definitly knows their corny Americana, which is very important. I have no doubt that the game will have a lot of hilarious moments like the previous ones. The birthday party and the greasers in the vault and the whole vault-tec commercial is spot on to the point of bringing tears of nostalgia to my eyes. (check this if you haven't seen it)
It does look a bit combat heavy though... which is the only part that still worries me. If they're going with their standard approach to quests where the only choice is kill or be killed, that will definitly dull the experience a bit. But I remain positive that Bethesda remembers that the original games were slightly niche and odd and that a lot of people are on edge because the Elder Scrolls company is messing around with their favorite brand.
Oh man, that trailer was brilliant, thanks for sharing that! I'm optimistic as well about this game, I can't wait for it.

...and what percentage of players would prefer walking through Fallout3 not killing anything or talking their way through text dialgue boxes that once FAQ'd, eliminate any guesswork? If the whole game can be completed by cranking up your speech skills or whatever they call it and choosing answer 1,2,3,4 in the proper order, wouldn't that basically trivialize the entire game?

You know the answer and its probably why most of the gameplay will relate to violent actions and/or blowing ^$%!$# up=)

I never understood why F2 was so great. After about 1/2 way through, the plot became so wide open and I forgot what I was supposed to be doing, casuing the whole game took a huge dump. I also didn't play it in its prime, so the graphics and gameplay felt a bit tedious & stale.
From the little that I played it was the great deal of freedom the game allowed for, and it's humor. It's a good thing to have a game that could be completed just by talking to people you know. As it stands I fully expect Bethesda to destroy this game; the last two games I have played from them (Morrowing, and Oblivion) have not been very good at all.

To those who say that they won't like Fallout 3 because they didn't like Morrowind and Oblivion, note that while some of the core gameplay mechanics (i.e. running around in a sandbox world) are similar, it is still very much a Fallout game. It has the humor, the crazy dialogue choices, the VATS, bottle caps as currency, mutants, and plenty of references to those original games.

And while playing in first person or third person might itself be what you are against, there is far more to Fallout than just playing in an isometric perspective. I say you should check out the latest videos Bethesda put up on their site that showcase some of the fighting and a few missions. It's incredible looking, and reminds me of my time with the original game.

It will be pretty different.
Though I would find it pretty funny if I ran into a mutant, and in the voice of a Nord it said "I've fought mud crabs more fearsome than you!"
"This is the part where you fall down and bleed to death!"
"Then pay with your blood!"
"Why. Won't. You. DIE?!?"

I certainly hope that Fallout 3 is different enough from Oblivion. While i did love oblivion, there were some things that irked me about it.

Provided they don't include the whole stupid mobs level as you do, i reckon we could be in for a real treat with fallout 3.
man that shat me,
that and that within two days play i was head of the thieves guild, assassins guild and mages guild and had three completely useless but sometimes mildly amusing NPCs following me around.

Yeah, I'm a bit worried it will be too much like oblivion as well (maybe more so because I didn't like Oblivion much, too many flaws/bugs + crappy combat make for lack of immersion)

After watching some of the more recent footage, my hope for the game has actually waned, because it looks a lot like oblivion in many ways, just with guns and better graphics. Still, the amount of choices seem to have increased and so has their relevance (unlike in oblivion where you are often forced to say one thing, or when you do get a choice it's totaly irrelevant, because the NPC says the same thing for all of them.)

Even if it's not as good as it looks, I'm sure it will be fun, because oblivion wasn't bad, and Bethesda seems to have refined the ideas they put into Oblivon and erased many of the flaws.

Here's hoping it's a decent game.

The reason for worry is, that if bethesda's games aren't typically good, then that means they just aren't good at making games, or at least not anymore. However, I don't quite understand it all. It may look like oblivion, but I think it looks like an improved oblivion.
They fixed some of the flaws, and are finally starting to learn from their many, MANY mistakes. At least I hope so.

On second thought, maybe I shouldn't hope so. That way, if it's bad, all I've lost is money.

From what I've seen of it, Fallout 3 looks like it'll be Oblivion played with a Fallout game mechanic inserted in the middle. I'm really not sure how that's going to turn out. It could be quite cool, more of a "post-nuclear thinking man's Oblivion" or it could flub terribly as a game that's another "neither quite as good as x nor as good as the y that was inserted" type fusion-experimental mistake. It depends on how well the implementation went.

The only thing I can say with certainty is that it won't be the third game in the Fallout series. Fallout was a turn-based isometric perspective game and this - we know for certain - is not. However, unlike an unabashed fan of the franchise, I don't care if it's like Fallout or not: I'm just looking for a fun game to play.

This is the argument against Fallout 3 that baffles me most: people saying how bad Bethesda's games are, and saying Oblivion in particular was not very good. I can understand not enjoying it yourself; my friend is constantly trying to get me to play more RTS games, but I prefer turn-based strategy games more. But what possesses people to bash Bethesda and Oblivion? It got all manner of awards, just about every rating system gave it a 9 out of 10 or higher (or whatever their equivalent is), and it has sold millions of copies.

People not liking it is one thing, but I'm tired of people saying it sucks or is a bad game. Just say you don't like it and move on.

And to respond to geldonyetich, you may worry about it not blending well, but if you read any of the previews of the game, every person who has had some hands on time with it has absolutely raved about it. We don't know if it will hold up to its promise of game length, or if the story remains as compelling and interesting as it does from the start, but it seems to me they're doing a damn fine job of it to start.

But thy Holiest of Lords of Yahtzee hath sayeth that Bethesda and Oblivion are crapeth and all shall sayeth it sucketh and useth thy word that is "immersion".

Here's why I think Oblivion scored well in reviews but a lot of the RPG community in general dislike it. (Aside from it being billed as an RPG when it?s really more of an action RPG)

The first five hours of playtime are awesome. Riding around on your horse through pretty fields doing whatever the heck you felt like is cool. Hell some of the quests are even really well written. (Dark Brotherhood ftw)

But then it happens. Suddenly the low-level random bandits are carrying improbably awesome loot. You start to hear the same lines ad infinitum. You find yourself thinking 'hey isn't this dungeon exactly the same as every other dungeon.' The AI movements of NPC's start producing laughable results. Then most importantly of all you find yourself not sleeping (in game not RL) because that way you still level up your skills but the world doesn't level up with you. (Everyone I've ever talked to who played a thief in this game pretty much had to do this to finish it)

To put it bluntly this game is awesome up until the point that the level scaling and radiant AI make it all fall apart into a massive shambles of mediocrity. Personally I think that any reviewer that scored this 8 or above just mustn't have reached that point.

I'm not having a go at games reviewers because they're under a lot of pressure to release their reviews early and its impractical to imagine that they'd be able to do a twelve hour play through with every character class. But sadly to really a get a sense of a game like this that?s what you have to do.

Oh and never cite sales figures as evidence that something is good unless your willing to accept that Titanic is the greatest movie ever.

as long as they took queues from the previous Fallouts, they should be ok.

Fallout 3 doesn't look like a buy to me until i see better reason to buy it. Mostly i have a problem with the VATs thing that promises instant kills that most players will abuse the hell out of, and that it's a sandbox game. While i like sandbox games, i tend to lose interest in them since you can pretty much do everything in the game before even doing the first mission or whatever, making the game rather lackluster when you start playing it, and just start doing missions just to get through the game so that you can have an excuse to never play it again.

I played Fallout 3 at PAX a week ago. In some ways it does play like Oblivion (controls are almost exactly the same, the sense of moving around feels like you're walking around in Oblivion, shit like that) but in some ways it actually reminds me of an above-land BioShock (weird medkits and hypos you can pick up all over the place).

Since I loved both of those games, I think I'll like Fallout 3!
