Simple question. Will Skyrim be remembered as a classic, or will it be vaguely remembered as "A good game that seemed much better at the time?"

So... that's that.

Well, I certainly remember it.

It's certainly better, but I don't think it will have as much impact as Oblivion did at the time, so that might affect how well it is remembered.

People are still gushing over Oblivion. Hell, even Morrowind. So yes. Because it's fucking amazing. And I'll probably still be playing it.

Well, if the amount of conversation about the original Halo is our indication, Skyrim will be immortalized.

Yes.
Don't simply answer yes. You'll have a low content post and that'll suck. Edit right away and you might not get a warning. Just a word to the wise.

It will be remembered. This is the first Elder Scrolls game I have liked despite wanting to like them. It is the only Elder Scrolls game I would recommend to any friends that like WRPGS. This is the first actual good entry into the elder scrolls. As such, it is going to generate a larger fanbase for the series by itself. SO the following game will be under much higher scrutiny. No more pulling that shit Oblivion pulled.

Being remembered =/= being a great game.

Warcraft III was one of the best RTS games of all times, and almost nobody remembers it, because it was overshadowed by it's MMORPG sequel: World of Warcraft.

I don't actually think so. Skyrim is a great game, but doesn't seem the type to be remember as a classic by the general gaming populace. Fans of RPGs and Bethesda would little remember it for a while though.

Oh yes, i rememeber that game. I played the shit out of the story, cuz i liked it, and i kept finding new easter eggs and stuff in it.

I also cheated my way through it, just like every elder scrolls so.....

I think it stands a good chance of being remembered. Heck, I'd almost guarantee it. Especially if BethSoft's next game sorta sucks; Skyrim will be remembered as a high water mark for them, alongside Morrowind for those old enough to have experienced it when it came out. It's the culmination of their plan for the series - aside from the various gameplay/graphical imperfections and bugs, Skyrim is unique in that it fulfills its entire design. There are no loose ends, no obviously weak sections. There's nothing where you can really say "This feature is missing." And that is what it will be remembered as - a game that got it right.

lol @ the complete lack of perspective of this. Like or not Morrowind or Oblivion, no one in their right mind can deny that they completely obliterated the competition at the time they came out. It's not even close. Some RPGs came out that may have been more involving in their storytelling, that prize is up for catch, but in terms of gameplay, production values and sheer scope, not even close. What did you have when Oblivion came out? Gothic 3? Two worlds? Sacred? Games that attempted their size ended up looking and feeling they were made for the Nintendo 64, games that matched storytelling or production values ended up having a small fraction of the content, replayability or longevity. TES games more than good, they are the standard every Fantasy game are measured agaisnt.

Skyrim gives me the same sense of wonderlust, the same sense of adverture that Fallout 3 gave me. I get lost in this game. And for that ability that it has to keep me engrossed in it's world, I have no doubt that I'll end up remembering it quite fondly in years to come.

It will be remembered as a very good game, because it is a very good game that is a major improvement on previous games within the series. I think it will be remembered more like SMB 3 (a well made, well thought out game) rather than a revolutionary new idea, but that is just my opinion.

I think Skyrim is going to be remembered for a pretty long time, if only because that seems to be the trend with Elder Scrolls games. That's mainly due to the fact that they have so much content, and when you add to that the ease with which mods can be made and used, you've got a game that's going to stick around for a very long time.

Only time will tell. It also depends on more than just progressed sales and quality, it's the emotional things you remember.

If you think back to your favorite games, it's the ones that hit home emotionally that you remember. They joy of opening a new game, or that WOW factor that a moment has on your psyche.

CoD will be remembered because everyone has a feeling about it. Those who play it and enjoy it remember the anger they get at bad games, or the joy and excitement they get from getting those game winning kills, those strong records, and intense moments. Those who don't will remember how the game didn't meet expectations, or the emotions they felt when they had to defend their claims. It's the reason why Bioshock will be remembered by me, having to defend my claims, while it's biggest fans remember the moments that everyone tells me I need to experience.

My guess is that if Skyrim is invoking you to leap out of your seat at a big kill, is making you emotionally connected via the story or anything, you'll remember it.

Btw, I always will remember Metroid Prime because I remember fighting Meta-Ridley and while strafing around him I was literally moving my wheely chair left and right and moving my body with Samus...haven't found a game to get me THAT involved since. That's how you remember games

Its already a classic in my book. Classic games invoke emotion and stay with you after you play them. Its how you can tell a good movie from a mediocre one. If you actually feel something while watching it and you remember it afterwards, it was probably well done.

So yes.

Anyone can plainly see, from the hordes of favorable reviews and praise, that Skyrim will be a benchmark for eastern RPG's for a while. It's not bolstering, it's simple fact.

Considering the escapist polls saying it's the best game of all time it better be remembered.

Seriously though, beyond the hardcore Elder Scroll fans there's no way.

There is really nothing in the game that truly stands out as remarkable. The characters and story elements are not exceptional. The environment is atmospheric but nothing memorable like say Bioshock. The combat feels behind it's time and the game has obvious flaws/bugs.

What Skyrim has going for it is great timing in it's release. People are ready for this kind of game and it is a great game because of the sum of it's parts. From my own 60 hours of gameplay, about the only thing I'll likely remember years from now was the Dark Brotherhood quest line. It was annoying (thanks to you know who), fun and led to something memorable.
