I was always under the impression that Gears had a horrible story anyway... it can't get much worse after Dom grew a family JUST so he can lop it off in a manly fashion.

Wasn't it bad from the start?

Although I admitedly liked the little back story book what came with gears 1. I would happily read that.
I don't actually get why people are ripping on the story, I think it was great. Not perfect, but what is (except FFVII)?
Its not that the story is bad, just hard to follow. Your usually just thrown into a situation and have to figure out stuff for yourself.
No its bad...damn bad
Well, it could be better if maybe they set the scene a little more rather than just throwing you into a level and marking where to go.
Gears is the kind of game that doesn't need a story, just the gameplay and senseless violence.

Seeing the huge amount I managed to write on the story:

I am currently laughing at those who say it doesn't have one. It's not amazing but it's a hell of a lot deeper than most people here are going on about.

It says a lot about how little attention most people actually make to the things they do. I got all this just from playing the games and watching all the cut-scenes. I have only played through each campaign properly about twice for those who will no doubt try and say I play it too much.

Well obviously, but it's still not perfect, but your right in it being one of the best games out there.

All things considered I have the following to say about the story of Gears of War...

Any enjoyment or interest I may have gleaned over the fate of this crapshack universe is completely destroyed by the unlikeable fuckwads they decided to make the primary protagonists. I have NO empathy or concern for a bunch of hyper macho roid monkeys trying to save their shitty militaristic status quo by pumping more rounds into it.

Similarly their sad sack attempt at making me care about a character (Dom and his wife) came across as forced, cliched and desperate, an attempt to strengthen the grim resolve of characters who have no other emotions.

And Cole? What the fuck? He's one of the worst goddamn stereotypes I've ever seen! Maybe it comes from living in Canada and never encountering these people but seriously... not a good character.

I'm still not FOND of Master Chief from the Halo series but I find him a million times more likeable and interesting than the alpha male jackasses in Delta Squad.

Though I will concede, Gears paints a great picture of an apocalyptic war against an unrelenting enemy.

The story or the game aint perfect. Theres no game with a perfect story. But Bioshock is an example how to do a good plot into a videogame without resorting to silly clichés and have an original backround.

Well said, the bolded part is what I try and get across when I defend the story.

The only disagreement I have is the steroid part, the reason they are like that is for artistic style as opposed to literal physique, it was mentioned by a developer in some video about the game.

Agreed, but I couldn't sit myself down for more than one playthrough due to the fetch-quests and some bad level design, still one of the best games though.

I wouldn't care so much about their physiques if I didn't have such a venemous dislike of their personalities, had we a cast of characters similar to Band of Brothers, Brothers in Arms or Saving Private Ryan... a group of relatable, ordinary people battling for the survival of their race... I would care a hell of a lot more. But no... that's far beyond what Cliffy B. and his Trained Monkey Squad are capable of, at least as far as I've been able to see.

I personally love the Gears story; I don't understand why everyone is saying it was terrible or "lacking" in the first place. As for ruining the story in the third game:

1). Try having faith. If you think that they will do a bad job, then you are more inclined to think that the result is bad regardless.

2). Look at it this way...if you're playing Gears for an in-depth story, you seem to have missed the point...of the chainsaw bayonet.

3). It's their game and their story...so they can do whatever they want with it.

Its not fair to say no story. The story is just weak. For me the big shocker should be that Marcus is gay, him and Dom ride off into the sunset together once all of the killings over. That would grab headlines...

Its fine to have a poor story. You only need enough to string the levels together. Game play is far more important. Ill read a book or watch a movie for storytelling. Even games famed for there story never really get past "ok" in quality.

Having completed GoW I decided not to buy GoW 2. Coop was a hoot and the cover system is nice but of no use in multiplayer where everyone seems to cartwheel round instead. Co-op was also too small and needed more players per server. My other complaint is none of the guns seem to do any real damage. It took most of a clip to down a locust with the lancer. No wonder they went back to bow and arrows. Even the sniper rifle often failed to kill with the first head shot. I did like the grenades and the saw though.

Something else not thought about in development was how difficult it is to use the R stick while holding B down for the saw. Did they remedy this in GoW 2?

I can see why it is popular, it just did set my world on fire. I preferred Army of TWO which is a very similar game.

The story wasn't very special. Watch any american action movie and you have the plot for GoW 2

Ruin the story? Thats like asking if a Dog will ruin the next turd he knocks out. A bunch of big chinned grizzled space marines -(oops, I mean Gears), saving humanity from the evil Orcs, (sorry, I mean locust), in a gothic, war torn world where women are either stay at home secretaries or evil. This story was a dead horse before Gears existed, and Epic are now flogging the grease spot where said dead horse used to be, but unless you read or watch films that didnt necersarily come out of HollyWood, you probably can't appreciate how piss poor this story really is, which most of its 15 year old audience can't.
