What are these rules, prey tell?
No 3rd party allowed. I guarantee you most 3rd party download are made for windows. And 3rd party programs have viruses. And if you download a virus bad things happen. On a Mac, your not downloading 3rd party anything anyways so what are you going to catch a virus from?
This will sound ignorant but bear with me as I'm clueless...

Does this mean that Apple only works with certain web browsers or websites?

How is it that you can get a virus from a site on a PC but the same site will not give your mac a virus?
No, but the core of Apple OSX is Unix, which is a totally different architecture than a windows-based system (and slightly different from a Linux core) it only means that some "parts" needed to make some viruses works aren't present in a Unix Core, or are different enough so that it dosen't work.

The Unix core is slightly more secure but the real reason there's less Mac viruses than PC ones are just numbers, if 80% of the world are using Win-Based computers, the virus maker will make it for them. There are some Mac viruses but most virus-makers just don't bother with such a small userbase.
Aha... now I get it. my Mac using buddy was trying to convince me that it was because peope don't hate Apple as much as they do Microsoft.

On that topic, what kind of malicious little wanker would you have to be to go writing viruses that fuck up peoples' computers??

I think malicious little wanker is pretty much right on the mark... :)

There aren't nearly as many downloads for MACs as PC so the overall error ratio is going to be heavily staggered in PC's direction.
But say for example if there was a virus attached to a video on some porno site like porntube, or a dodgy file sharing site, could that virus only affect PCs and not macs? Would the mac prevent the video from being downloaded or would it just not even come up on the mac browser?

I'm so confused...
No because the program to view the porno would be something like quicktime or flash, which are more like second party programs, If you were just streaming it then there is no way to get a virus as you are actually not downloading the video back to the HIV reference. You can't get HIV from watching someone have sex, but you can by actually doing it. Quicktime lets you view the file without downloading it. Now if you downloaded the video file, yeah it could have a virus if it was a ZIP file. But that's not a program, it's just a data file which can be downloaded and used on a OS if you have the right opening [b/]program[/b] such a quicktime. Obviously this is an oversimplification so hardcore computer jocks don't kill me.

I really don't think you are 99% of the people. I have never seen a statistic that said "99% of the people who use computers don't know what the hell they're doing".

You now own a computer, take some time to learn how to use it.

No, the most non-user friendly OS would be Unix not Windows. At least Windows is mostly visual and intuitve to figure out. OS's like Unix and DOS required you to either memorize or have a long list of every command for everything you wanted to do. No mouse, no icons, no help files nothing. You have to buy a book or have a resident OS expert to understand those OS's.

OK I get it now. Thanks! It's good to know streaming videos is safe.

I was raised with Windows 95 and then later 98 SE. Those of you who know what I'm talking about know the horror and I hope your therapy is going well. That being said I like Vista but I think it's "only" because the older versions were so terrible that in comparison Vista glistens like gold in the sun. If this is the true reason behind the abomination called Windows 95, 98, and 2000 (shudder), then Microsoft must be brought down because while that is a genius strategy, it is also pure evil.

That would be a rather patronising post were it not for the fact that there is a difference between not knowing what the hell you're doing and not having a deep technological understanding of computer programming.

I guarantee you 99% of PC users do not know what this kind of shit means:

I can infer that it has something to do with SQL Server and it's because you did something in Microsoft Access.

From that error message, I recommend you learn what a FLOAT is and how to use the CONVERT function. And if you have any problems do a search for error message #257.

Error messages are supposed to tell how to fix them or at the least how to find out more information on it.

No experience here but wasn't linux the most used OS in IT colleges and such? If i remember correctly, it was the single OS which you are allowed to mod to hell and backward without M$ secret police after you, the only condition being that said modder must not obtain any profit.

Dunno, just my 2 cents.

Pretty much, but Linux demands a little (or a lot, depending on the distro) know-how from the *user* not just the system administrator, for joe anybody, Windows is much easier to use.

Also, the thought of going online to get your device drivers (what? the drivers on the cd won't work with linux? well most don't...) or software patch is a little too much.

OK, but imagine that your granny gets that message on her computer, she does not have the internet and a forum full of tech savvy gamers to explain it to her, nor does she know that she should search for the error message.

SQL server is double dutch to her and all she sees is a repeated jargon filled code.

Granny ain't gonna be happy with her computer!

Most people won't know what this means, agreed. This is why there's jobs as tech support :p

As the plate behind my bosses desk says "If everyone knew how computers works, we'd have to find real jobs" hehehe

Truth is, she would never see it, because if she did, she would have to be using Microsoft Access (I have only used it once and I think it's for form making) and if she was using Microsoft Access she would most likely know what Access is and what that error message means.

Also get this, computers weren't made for people who don't know how to use them. Same reason cars aren't made for people who can't drive. They either learn how to drive, or don't drive, or crash.

Never ever had a problem with 32 bit XP, if you don't like Vista you should try 7.

#1- I put my computer to hell and back and I don't get any errors.
#2- If you dislike Windows, use Linux. If you know absolutely nothing about computers get a Mac.

Piss off and read a book. Oh wait, you've pumped yourself full of toxins instead. Smart move, my tech-wise friend, smart move.

Again, a little patronising.

Most people don't learn how to re-wire the radio when it cuts out, or replace the engine when it dies, or put in a new windscreen if it breaks.

But if the windscreen inexplicably and suddenly shatters and the car was being used normally just to drive down the road then that would be a fault of the manufacturer.

We're talking mechanical errors here not basic operation.
