So Witcher 2 is coming out on 360 (and maybe ps3?) I'm told its a in depth dark fantasy Rpg. Great ok that should be fun, but as with all in depth fantasy rpg's you should play the prequel to understand it right? they apparently are not releasing the first game on consoles, so why did they bother releasing the second on consoles? People will just be confused.
I have seen a trailer thing which was supposed to bring me up to speed but I finished watching and just thought, "ok I have a general idea, but I still dont quite know whats going on in most areas". Maybe I am just a bit slow on the uptake, but I didn't feel it explained enough. Like wtf are witchers?
Just seems stupid to me, thoughts anyone?

Maybe to understand some of the terms, but the plot of Witcher 1 was tied up so neatly that knowledge of it means very little in Witcher 2. The events are not too related, you'll catch up fairly quickly.

Because the Witcher 2's combat and audio-visual design is far more refined than in Witcher 1. Witcher 1 was pretty much a "hardcore PC RPG" and it had a lot of the tropes of the genre, both positive and negative. It simply wouldn't have sold well. Now Witcher 2 can

The plot gets increasingly complex as you play, I played Witcher 1 and I had no idea what's happening in Witcher 2 until I actually played it. Don't let a little bit of confusion stop you

Witchers are professional monster hunters created with alchemy, so they're mutants and people don't like them. Simple

The reason why the first Witcher never came to consoles is because there was a dispute with one of the publishers and in the end they decided to drop it (if I remember correctly). Now the Witcher 2 is being ported to 360 (no word on PS3 yet, but the studio would like to do one), and no you don't really need the first game to understand what's going on in the second game, but there are some parts that carry over from the first game which you may not understand. I just suggest googling some more, or watching more videos till you understand, or just wiki what happened in the first witcher.

Because when I saw that The Witcher 2 is coming out on the 360, I threw my money at the computer screen hoping that it would make it happen faster.

It sucks that I didn't get to play the original but I'm guessing that they have some kind of a solution to this (either a "Previously on..." kind of thing or maybe it just didn't matter and The Witcher 2 can just stand on it's own story-wise).

I was in the same boat...

But then I noticed yesterday that I can now play the first game on my computer. They apparently snuck in a Mac version. I bought it on a Steam sale in December because it was cheap and I knew I'd want to play it when I become a PC gamer.

Before then, I was planning on waiting to buy the second game until I had a chance to play the first. I don't like jumping in to a series without having seen/played/read the original.

That was a very pleasant surprise yesterday morning. I clicked The Witcher in my library by accident and saw the words "Install" in bright white letters. Yay!

Well I got the the Witcher 2 today in the post and I'm not really having any trouble getting to grips with the story.

It's a great game, looks damn good too.

The story between Witcher 1 and 2 are largely unconnected. Rather than playing the first game reading one or any of the books would work just as well as an introduction to the characters and setting. I recommend 'The Last Wish' as it's a collection of short story that need no previous knowledge of the setting to enjoy.

Overall however Witcher 2 stands fine on its own. There are a couple points that might puzzle you, but not many.

From a business perspective, it makes perfect sense. Ultimately, what they're trying to do is open the game up to a new market of customers, the 360 owners. Same thing happened with the ME series, they just attached an interactive comic to make it more accessible. Bottom line, it's all about the bottom line.

I'm pretty excited to learn more about this game, and I literally only discovered its existence yesterday . The fact it's on the 360 is a big plus to me :)

PC? The enhanced edition can be preloaded, a stonking titanic 10gigs.

And i do agree, i just got it 2 days ago, and so far its simple to follow. I love how the journal entries are all from another perspective. Ubersampling makes my setup get down on its knees and beg.

Sorry i just had to talk to someone about it...

Well Mass Effect 2 was was ported to PS3 without ME1 being released so I guess all you really need to port a sequel without its predecessor is for it be a well received game. If the people who like it want to, they can read up on the previous game or just buy it on PC.

Pay attention and you'll get to grips with what's going on. Plenty of PC gamers didn't actually play the first (the first 5 hours... I just couldn't! I'm sorry!).
