Because Americans have the habit to be known for being arrogant assholes. That's just how it works. They hate us, and we hate the French. It's really nothing new.
So you approve of ignorant assumptions based on little to no factual evidence?
Never said that.

I'm saying that ignorance is something you'll always have to live with and deal with, so instead of getting in a big huff about it each and every time, just ignore it so you can live your life peacefully.
Ignoring a problem doesn't make it go away.
And neither will throwing a fit every time something tiny pokes you. I love how you're making such a huge deal out of this too, considering when people refer to 'America' they usually are referring to the U.S., so implying that 'America hasn't been around since Jesus' is correct. You're just overreacting.

If there's one thing you can count on, it's people's idiocy and ignorance. You're not going to get through to them and you'll just wear yourself out trying so hard, so why not ignore the idiocy and move on so you can actually enjoy yourself?

I think Amercia as a term for the USA, rather than either of the continents, is pretty widely accepted. In fact I think it's mainly propogated by Hollywood!

Anyway, why do stereotypes exist? That seems to just the way people think. And Americans (sorry, people from the United States of America) have the stereotype of being ignorant, macho, overeaters whose disdain for the rest of the world is matched only by their ignorance of it. Massively unfair? Yes of course. But then not all French people wear a beret and stink of garlic, not all Brits have bad teeth and talk like Victorian-era schoolmasters, and not all Australians hop to work on a kangaroo whilst chugging castlemaine XXXX.

Ok maybe the one about the French is true... ;)

Yah, this chick was stupid. But what is the deal with all this 'Calling US citizens Americans is ignorant' stuff? I mean, I could demand to be referred to as a 'UK citizen', but to call me British isn't ignorant, it's just not anal.

It's because people that are getting hated tend to hate back and people also have little tolerance for countries filled with enough ignorance to make threads like these.
I'm ignorant because someone is hate filled over people they have not personally met or ever will because they are so close minded that they won't leave their holy homeland that is oh so perfect in their eyes?
"have not personally met" Then how can you make assumptions that the rest of he world hates your country? And how can you assume it is perfect in their eyes?

Your answer to these 2 questions will prove the argument you just made against me invalid. So answer or don't, it no longer matters.
I didn't say the whole world, I SAID ignorant people. Taking one line out of context is not the same as talking to the person in an actual conversation. When I come across someone in a still living thread or post being ignorant I usually comment to get some insight on their usually blind hatred. Claiming someones argument is invalid is the same as saying you could no longer hold a conversation with out going into a flame war. The perfect line I had was just an analogy nothing to be taken to heart like you had.

I chalk down all my hate down to the Alabama Top gear episode. Still I know a lot of people from the US who are well educated.

Basically, George Bush.
I'm not being a troll, but he seriously is a major reason.
Ask around and you'll see.
I thought Obama giving the British a boxed DVD set of American classics when they give him a pen and pen holder made out of a VERY important ship (to the British) and special dresses to his daughter also helped establish U.S. citizens as arrogant, ignorant bastards.
And I though George Bush actually had fairly good approval ratings of other countries...
OT: Patriotism/Nationalism. You live in country X. Everyone in country Y is worse. You have been taught that you live in the best country, propaganda (in all forms) has told you that there is no better place to live. Why, after a lifetime of learning one thing, would you change your views?
Also, Americans generally refer to U.S. citizens. You have Canadians, Argentinians, etc.etc.
U.S.A just has America in it, and it's people are referred to as such. Much easier to say American than United States Citizen/US American. It's like calling someone from the United Kingdom British, as in Great Britain versus a UK citizen. It's quicker, and people generally know what you mean.

I think people's main quip with that is that 'the Americas' as a whole refers to North America (the USA and Canada) and South America (including Brazil, Peru etc) plus all of the islands in the area (I think maybe including Jamaca, not sure). Therefore showing ignorance because the person is refering to a lot more places than what they are actually refering to. However, just calling it 'America' is a lot easier. I just make a point of not doing so in text.

I just make a point of not making a judgement based on that sole fact, because it is a common mistake.

Hey I didn't take it to heart. Just pointing out where a Hypocrisy lays.

And you've just answered your own argument against me. We're done.

Yeah, they are. Ask some Americans (sorry, Citizens of the United States) what they think of the French. Then ask about British. Australia might be a little harder. These stereotypes are accepted. You're just annoyed about the Ignorant Americans because you are an American (which MEANS US citizen). It seems more offensive because you are a member of the insulted group.

i used to live near some americans back in cyprus (small island country just south of turkey) and they were nice nothing to complain about there. however i have also met some americans who are the most gung ho, patriotic military nuts i have ever seen and solely believed that every action taken by the US government must be right (even to the point where he condoned if not approved the invasion of vietnam and subsequent use of napalm and tree defoliants on the country)

the one other major thing i dont like about america is that if you look at nearly every major conflict in the world since WW2 you will find america either actively participating in the war or supplying one side with weapons and money (or in some cases started the war to begin with)

p.s. although stereotyping is not good and will never be good you've got to think that there was some original factor that started that stereotype.

p.s.s. the reason why people probably refer to the US as america is because there full title is the USA (united states of AMERICA) just the people have shortened it to the US and now refer to it as the united states dropping the america bit

By take it to heart I usually mean take seriously I commonly interchange the two.

On a lighter note:
Well I never claimed to be perfect and yes I can be a bit of a hypocrite at times but to be fair almost everyone is as it is human nature to make things easier and overcoming that natural thing is a challenge I have not yet bested.

and back on topic:
Yeah this is about wrapped up between us.

edit: fixed quotes.

ideology my friend. it is every religion, every race, and every opinion that got a lot of attention. simply put, it is the belief that whatever your race is, your religion, or your ideas, that they are better than that guy over theres, assuming he thinks differently. this is the reason why 99.9% of all humans in the world will say that a guy from china is chinese, and a guy from their country is awesome, instead of person A and person B being referred to as what they are without question. that is human. honestly i have an issue with people that dont see that, but ill not bother you all with my opinion cause that would make me and ideological asshole.

How could two whole continents,
Lose their name to one Constitute
Where were we when the U.S. went,
And took the word American away?

But to be fair to them,
Their other name options,
Like U.S.A.ers or United Statesians,
Were pretty bad

Still I want to be as American,
As the French are European,
Or those in Antarctica are Antarctican
Even if they`re just penguins
When someone says American, assume they mean someone from the United States. That's an assumption so universal, referring to a Paraguayan or Canadian as "American" because they come from the Americas is incorrect. You wouldn't call an Angolan "South African", though they do come from the southern part of Africa.

That's because America is a large, global superpower. They kind of have to pick a side each war/ start it. Most major wars after WWII involved America/Soviet Union because of an ideology clash. Then, the new (edit: fixing location) Afghanistan war is because of retaliation after a terrorist attack on New York. The older Iraq war was because of a dictator refusing to obey UN regulations about WMDs. America became the enforcer to make Saddam give them up. Being a global power with a large military, it makes sense that they would be actively involved in most modern wars.
Oh, and stereotypes are always based a little on a fact or opinion of the one being stereotyped. Same goes for positive stereotypes, such as America being a land of opportunity. There are negative and positive stereotypes everywhere, involving just about everything.

Bush didn't help, but neither did Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, Richard Nixon, Woodrow Wilson, Obama, and even Reagan. The truth is that the leaders of our (and everyone elses) country think there dick is bigger than everyone elses and act as one of the following:
a. "Fuck all of you I'll do what I want."
or
b. "I'm going to try and kiss you ass because I think I'm better than those before me."

and kid, it's the ignorant people that this guy is talking about that blame Bush. In the end our presidents are for show. at least for now they are.

There is one race, the human race.
OT:
I judge people (or try to) by their behavior and what they say and not where they live, the correct way of judging if you judge at all.
