Why does this shit happen in China?

The People's Republic of China has the largest population out of any country, it makes up 20% of that of the entire earth. One in five people in the world lives there, not including people from Chinese descent who are foreign nationals (like myself) or the Republic of China which despite the PRC's stance is their own country.

Although the middle and upper class has risen, much of the country lives in poverty and in homes with no running power or water. Others live in heavily polluted areas. Many of them can't afford proper medical treatment, and many of those who can refuse to and believe in superstitions that make conditions worse. The populations of some rural regions are notorious for their poor hygiene, health and dental problems.

So when something weird randomly happens chances are China will get it, and there it doesn't get treated.

Logically speaking, a country with ~20% of all the people in the world would have a significant share of these sorts of rare mutations.
When you account for the generally high pollution level, and high poverty level, with correspondingly poor healthcare for most people the pieces fall into place.
Pollution can cause all sorts of bizarre health problems and mutations for developing children. (Probably not the culprit here, she's probably had reasonably healthy living conditions to make it to 101.) A mutation like that would probably have been spotted and removed in a country with good healthcare long before it could grow to that size.

By these factors combined, we have probabilistically high likelihood that random rare medical disorders or conditions will arise from China.
Also, the Universe's damn crazy.
