"I have to make a lot more effort to let them do things now. But I have nine children, it is physically impossible for me to have nine children and make sure they are all safe all the time. I just have to trust them."

REALLY?? then maybe she shouldn't have had NINE CHILDREN!

seriously... the world is ALREADY overpopulated... it does NOT NEED people having NINE KIDS... for the next DECADE or so people need to pretty much be restricted to ONE child per child-bearing couple. (which excludes those who don't want/can't have kids)

1.) Whether you have 1 or 100 kids, you are responsible for each and every one of them, so you are responsible for taking care of them 24/7 because WHO ELSE is going to look after them?

2.) If you don't believe that you can take care of 9 kids, then logic would dictate that you probably SHOULDN'T have 9 kids, but advising people to not have a ton a kids nowadays is like peeing in the wind.

3.) When incidents like this happen, the kids should be immediately given to their nearest relative(s) or in some kind of government care because clearly the mother is unfit to take care of her kids.

Seriously, everyone is at least entitled to be a parent and to have as many kids as they want. This doesn't necessarily mean that everyone SHOULD be a parent and/or have as many kids as they want. Unfortunately, many kids are brought into this world unplanned or as a means for income so I can only feel bad for the kids that are caught up in all this and those who have suffered under the watch of these idiots.

Ninja'd! >_<

But yeah, seriously. If she knew that she couldn't look after NINE children then why the hell did she have them in the first place? Didn't she see this coming after like 5 or so?

If it's physically impossible to watch all her children, perhaps she should stop fucking having so many. Learn to grow up and have some goddamn responsibility, woman. You have HOW MANY CHILDREN?

More and more this makes me wish there were laws in place that only allows people over twenty-one who pass a special course to legally have children.

EDIT: As to the situation, who leaves small children unattended near a pool? That's just asking for drowning.

So leaving a toddler unattended in the pool for several minutes and it dying as a result is perfectly acceptable in the eyes of the court.

Alrighty then.

Use a freaking rubber then woman!
Honestly.... I can't believe she got away with that =/ that's pretty sad.
Poor kid, or even kids, the brothers and sisters must be pretty distraught as well.

My dad is part of a 9 child family and all of them have been perfectly safe when they were growing up and they were let out a lot too. So... i'm not sure whether this argument really works.

Having more than two children is very irresponsible. If you absolutely must have more children, then adopt. The world doesn't need more babies.

I don't have any stories like that because one person doesn't equal the entire of humanity to me.

Anyway, seeing as I don't have any stories like that, lets focus on the good things.
Like huskies.

Aren't they just adorable?
Yeah they're cute now, but wait until they start shedding. Keep Huskies outside, they make good farm dogs and they won't shed their winter coats over your carpet.
My dad has a huskey and there's fur everywhere in the house he has to vacuum twice a day
O.T. I really have no words to say...

I'm a twin, and a second child. I'm pretty certain i've turned out all-right. Its the parents resposability to look after kids, but if they can handle more than two kids, go right ahead.

The only time i've nearly died as a child was a few minuites after i was born becasue a nurse forgot to turn on my incubateor, and i nearly sufficated, along with my sister. My parents have done a good job, i hope. Having that many kids is a factor, but presumably after a few start to grow up they can help with looking after the other ones?

Really? Really....this seriously shows up so much in the media lately, and makes me have no support for anybody in a bad situation with more than 1 kid. If you're going to have more than one child, and you arent able to keep track of them all and keep them safe, why are you having them...really...
Really?

So you'd be able to track all of your future spawn at all times?

Sometimes kids escape. Sometimes kids run away. Sometimes kids get lost. Does it matter if she has one kid or twenty?

Take care of some children some time maybe you'll know what you're talking about.

I disagree. I'm fine with big families, on the proviso that they're looked after properly.

On-Topic: This woman is a damn fool. True, if you have nine kids you cannot be expected to look after all of them all of the time. But if you have nine kids, you should damn well be expected to at least watch over the young ones, especially if they're in a potentially dangerous situation.

A pool can be dangerous. You shouldn't leave kids there unattended. She should have been convicted guilty of involuntary manslaughter - but then, that would leave her other kids even worse off.

Wow man, I just looked up that clip with the full intention of posting it in this thread. Howards line "Ban your fanny untill you can look after what pops out of it" was pretty much the first thing that popped into my head.

I do have some serious thoughts on the matter which I will summarize into these three points:

  • 1. It is unreasonable to expect parents to watch their kids 24/7.
    2. It is unreasonable to have 9 kids, seriously why?!
    3. It is unacceptable to leave a toddler alone in a swimming pool.

On one hand she is right, you cant watch kids 24/7. Accidents do happen.

But ultimately, this case can be chalked up to negligence on her part.

And jesus fuck, reading that article she as a blended family of 16 kids (or would it be 15 now).

Its an extreme case with 9 kids. But you CANT watch over your kids all the time. I could have died hundrets of times when i was a kid. We played in the woods, climbed trees, hit each other with branches, ran across streets, explored old abandoned bunkers. We got our scars and scratches and every second kid broke a bone or two occasionally. Yes and it was possible that one of us fell down a tree in a bad manner or would have been ran over lethaly. Accidents happen. And locking your kids inside the house wont do them any better.

I'm sure this has been said before, but, while I agree that it's difficult to keep a sharp eye on nine people at once...not all of them are 22 months old and in a freaking swimming pool. Seriously - if you're all in the pool, the older ones should be taught how to swim and how to be safe in the water (i.e. not doing cannonballs onto each other), and anyone too young to keep themselves afloat needs to be being closely watched. Seriously.

You shouldn't be leaving any of them totally unattended anyway (unless some are teenagers/adults themselves and can watch the younger ones). It's a swimming pool. Kids older than 22 months manage to drown themselves in like six inches of water.

EDIT: (to clarify after reading some more other posts) - I also agree that when I was a kid, there were tons of chances for me to kill myself (mostly by falling out of trees), and you can't (and shouldn't) wrap your kids in cotton wool. However,I think water is a special case. It's *so* easy for kids to die in the water. Also - 22 months old. Come on. That needs watching.
