Definitely a cultural thing!

I'm currently living in Japan, and here a slight nod/bow is a completely valid form of greeting. It's so freaking convenient.

P.S. I'm a woman.

I tend to completely phase out most of the time so if I had a chance of nodding usually the person is already in my face going 'why you no sit next to me when you got on the bus?!?! Im your sister!'

...yeah im a bit of a daydreamer.

I've never used the nod on a girl (doesn't sound right) - it's only other guys that get a nod and a semi-audible "awright".

Select males friends - only ones I've known for a long time and through some common shared ground/interest (as in not workmates or "general" friends - will receive the "manhug".

With girls, it's usually just a "hi" with the ocassional wave.

Most of the girls i know are into "hugging", somthing i am not a fan of.

I like "the nod", it is all that is needed.
See, I have the exact opposite problem. All my guy friends are into hugging me. Maybe I look inherently huggable?

Either way, I do not approve. I'm not a very touchy-feely person. Thus, I usually do "the nod." A smile is reserved for people I like.

I'm a guy and I almost always do a downwards nod to acknowledge someone, male or female. Occasionally do the upwards nod without thinking about it if the person is farther away, don't really know why. Never seen a girl do either though.

I mainly think of the nod as 'sup or 'ight; only occasionally acknowledgment. Never done it to a girl or seen one do it.

Also, an UP version of the nod!? What blasphemy is this!? That isn't even a nod!
You and your rules of the world.

Up is generally accepted to be reserved more often for people you know well.

I know I do, and since I'm a respectful person who tries not to piss anyone off by making them think I'm better than them, I do the downward nod almost exclusively. I also very rarely look random people directly in the eye.

Not anymore no. This is why:

In Middle School I didn't have a lot of friends and I would get into school very early and just wait by the back of the school to get into my first classes. Every morning my English teacher would see me and I would give her a smile and a wave. Now me going through a tough phase in my life, I was having a bad day one day, and instead of giving her a smile and a wave I gave an upwards nod in her general direction. She seemed to take it as a huge insult because she would never smile and wave at me again and generally gave me some bad looks. After that I stopped nodding at people.

I am a woman and I do the "upwards nod" to people. But it seems I have been using it wrong up to this point! D: I do "the nod" to guys I do not know (eg. in a bar, on the train...) but whom I find attractive and want to talk to... Probably called flirting, that is.

But I guess it should be also noted that I am a pure tomboy... Dunno if that matters or not.

I give a little mock salute to everyone I meet, to my knowledge i'm the only one who does that. I started doing it sometime in high school and haven't been able to stop since.
Like a slightly informal salute? Or more like a playful salute?

OT: ... I have never noticed that. I guess it is one of those things that you sort of know to be a guy thing, but you never really bother thinking about it enough to go "Ooooh! True stuff!"

Heh, I do it too. Mainly as a greeting for my select friends, and as a farewell too.

OT: I also use "the nod", mainly to people I pass and don't have time to stop and talk to. To people in my friend group, as I'm doing the rounds, I usually give "the nod" to people I'm not aquainted with enough to get a high-five/manhug/rugby tackle. These nods are usually accompanied by "how's it going?"

I use the nod for people I recognise and perhaps know slightly.
All of my friends get their own individual little greet.
The greets just develop as I begin to know them.
One of my friends gets a hug with a wiggle in it. one guy gets Brofist/half hug/backpat combo.
My best friend gets anything from a raising of the eyebrow to a sexy dance depending on how easy I think I can creep him out today. For the last 5 years we've been locked in an endless game of gay chicken. Brings me great amusement :D

Right hand to forehead, then a quick little wave off to the side. So I guess it's more playful.

It's logical.

You see someone you know but you have nothing to say to them currently. You acknowledge them politely and they do the same. You go your seperate ways until eventually you have something to say to them. Or this could be with a random person, just to show respect.

Women tend to either talk extensively to someone or ignore them entirely.

Never seen anyone do the downward nod as a form of acknowledgment, but I have done it a few times myself before.
Now that i think of it, the only time i wave at anyone is if they're really far away.

Most girls I know are very huggy, which i hate, because it devalues hugs, so I usually don't hug them when they ask for one. And it's very pleasing to the ear to hear a girl plead for my hugs.

I've used the "coy-smiling-nod" with a few girls,
only worked with asian chicks for me,

I do the nod, but only to people that I barely know. If I spot someone far away I'll either shout like a jackass, or be slightly smoother with a wave that I do with two fingers.

Think that sounds strange? Go ahead and look how your "nod" actually looks in the mirror. Not so pretty is it?
