So, we were watching a movie in class about how corporations are evil, they exploit people and their only goal is to make as much money as possible. (Yeah, we watch sweet movies like that all the time in this class!)

Anyways, afterwards I was walking in the hall behind someone that had just come out of the same class. She and her friends were carrying fancy Gucci/Chanel purses, nice jewelry, quality shoes - you know the type. And they were saying, to paraphrase:

'Its good that we only pay people in small countries like $1 or $2 a day, because that is all they need. Rice and canned goods cost like 15 cents there, so its no big deal. And their cars cost like 3 thousand! If we pay them more, then what will they do with all that extra money? And, things will start costing more for us! That isn't fair.'

I was just... wowed by that. Honestly? $2 a day to support a family of 8? Sure, canned goods are cheap - but they can't be a staple. And $2 doesn't pay for medical care.

I was tempted to tell her to go live in one of those countries, working herself to the bone and see how "good" it was. But. For all I know she is actually a decent person, working to pay her way through school, and she's just a little confused.

heh.

Ever had a similar experience? Does anyone actually agree with her? o_O [[EDIT: and, should I have posted this in politics? It isn't really politics, but... ]]

It's not politics, it's idiocy; idiocy has a wonderful place in Off-Topic.

OT: I truly hate people like those. Can't seem to look at themselves and see what they have done with their extra money.

I'd like more context before judging someone. For all I know they could have been joking.

they have no idea what they are talking about but then again corporations do what they can get away with and i dont see the production nations making the same mistake as the unions in Detroit where they priced them selves out of work

Out of sight, out of mind. Let me give you an example.

Ford released their Pinto model in the 70s, this car had a habit of blowing up when rear-ended, due to a fault in the petrol tank. Ford knew of this fault and decided that it would be cheaper to pay any possible damages in court than to recall all the vehicles and correct the problem.

Also another fun fact, more people die at work due to unsafe conditions than to all violent crimes.
So remember fellow escapists, you're more likely to die today at work than you are at being stabbed during a mugging.

Sadly, my trip behind them lasted about 3 minutes. They were being serious.

If those girls weren't joking, then wow...
I've been impressed by stupidity before, but this is taking it a whole new level.
From the way you described her (with the brand name stuff), she doesn't sound like someone who is working through school. In fact, she doesn't sound like someone who has actually worked before.

That is... awe-inspiring. Not the good kind of awe-inspiring, but still...

I really hope she was joking. If not, she'd be a member of the types of human dregs I wish never existed. I mean... wow... I don't how people develop a train of thought like that, and like I said, if she's not joking, I really pity her parents for bringing up someone so monumentally dumb.
It doesn't help if she was talking about the US dollar, because that's dropping faster than hell.

Well, the name of the topic kind of sums up my feelings. I have met some stupid people before, but nothing that compares to this.

Terrorist Tree-huggers. I understand them. I understand their cause. But I really wish they would instead of using firebombs to burn down new construction after their beloved forests were cut down they would use their money instead to research an alternative to plastic.

Some people just can't grasp that America isn't the only country in this world and there are other people in the world (I'm assuming that you're in America, of course).

I don't believe corporations are evil (except for Verizon and Comcast), but that has got to be one of the dumbest things I have heard in a while.

There are some things public school can't teach. For everything else, there's karma.

First of all, I'm an American myself. Second, only people who can afford (both financially and emotionally) to think about themselves only do it, and America just so happens to be the country that does that the most. Ever hear of Maslow's hierarchy? The basic concept is that the healthy human mind won't even think about luxuries until the needs of food, clothing, shelter, security etc. are met and remain fulfilled. This is why folks in third world countries need to be thought of more, if we can barely feed them and clothe them, then how are we to expect that they start thinking about schools and industry?
