So, after spending over 50 hours playing Ni No Kuni, I've only just now realized that what I've been calling it, "Nino No Kuni" was the incorrect way of naming it. I'm not sure what it was, I'm assuming my eyes tricked me into thinking there was an extra "no" in the title.

I also noticed that when talking about Studio Ghibli, I tend to switch the "b" and the "l" so I end up calling it "Ghilbi" instead.

Have you guys ever done this? Has there ever been a word or name you've been using in a certain way for a long time only to find you've been saying it wrong?

Well, saying "Deus Ex" with my normal speaking voice always makes it sound like "Day-you-sex". I have to stop and enunciate for that one.

Also, only tangentially related to the topic I suppose but I refuse to refer to the new Metal Gear game by the silly subtitle it has, so I always just call it Metal Gear Rising.

But mispronunciations or whatever else mostly only come from titles that are from a different language, like Atelier Meruru.

I usually end up shoving a T into something if it's anywhere difficult to say, like AmateraTsu instead of Amaterasu for example.

My one friend is legendarily bad at this. He slaughters the names of practically every LoL Champion you care to name. Fiora? Floria. Irelia? I-re-ell-ah. Ahri? Ahari.

Most infuriatingly he calls the item Sheen "Shen." When there's already a fucking character in the game called Shen.

"I'm buying my Shen now guys! That Varldomir won't know what hit him!"

I agree with his pronounciation of Akali and Xin though. Xin because fuck the mainstream it's pronounced as it's written not Zin haterzzzzzzzz and Ack-ali not A-karli like every one else seems to think.

Oh and we cut the rw out of Warwick so it's Wahick almost. War-Wick is just so many unnecessary syllables. Not that anyone plays WW anymore though.

Playing Pokemon with my friends was my childhood, and not being native English speakers (games were very rarely translated in Dutch back then) we always pronounced 'Repel' as 'Ré-pol'. And it kind of stuck, so I occasionally catch myself saying it wrong again.

Pronounced Pokemon Ruby "Rubby" for awhile when I was a kid, until I was corrected. Misread the American Civil War Battle of Antietam as the Battle of "Anti-et-nam", too.

my friend keeps calling it "Jew sex" hes not taking the mick, he just thinks thats how its called.

for me most Nordic/scandinavian things that had a "J" in them. i only recently found out its usually pronounced as a "y" which makes things alot easier to say

Tager from blazblue . I used to pronounced it T-Ah-Ger instead of T-Ay-Ger . Until my friend got mad at me , multiple times for saying it like that .

As a kid , i used to call Chocobos from Final fantasy games , Chicabos. Until i was 13 and a kid corrected me by laughing at me , it was around the time Final fantasy 9 came out .

Speaking of which , i call the protagonist of FF9 , Z-Eye-Day-Ne. I still do actually .

Which reminds me . Yuffie , from FF7 , will forever be , Y-UH-FF-EE. I refuse to call her , Y-OU-FF-EE. Fuck you kingdom hearts.

Edit : OP , i'm not sure if it was you , but i remember a thread before the game came out where the OP wrote , Ni Noni Kuni , and i was going to correct him , and then said fuck it i don't want to look like an ass . If it was you , i'm sorry , this could have been avoided .

i'm assuming that is sarcasm, but maybe not? In the US, where the developers are from, it is spelled that way, it's our differences in english compared to the UK's english.

If I try spelling the word "colour" or "honour", I get massive red squiggles all over the page.

OT: when I was very young, probably 6-7ish, I NEVER heard anyone pronounce the word "genre", so I just pronounced it like I thought it sounded, "Jen-err", and of course, I raised my hand during class one time and tried using the word, in which case everyone gives me a "wtf..jennnnerr...wha-you mean jaan ra??!?!?1 LOLOLOLOLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!"

was quite embarrassing.

Machinima was another tough one for a while, didn't hear anyone pronounce it, so just pronounced it like "machine" with a ma on the end. to be honest, i still to this day don't know it's PROPER pronunciation, i've seen so many different ways to say it, and they've been from all over.


also, Linux, mispronounced that one for a while.

I called Jaina Solo 'Jana' for years. It wasn't until I was in high school and my friend pointed out that her name is spelled the same way 'rain' is spelled that I finally realized that. Others include:

Red XIII's grandfather's name. I mean, come on...no human can pronounce that! Also, a LOT of things from Final Fantasy VII. It wasn't until Advent Children came out that I realized I'd been saying things wrong.

I added an 'r' in Quistis' name in Final Fantasy VIII so it was 'Quirstis' for the longest time.

Xenomorph was always 'zen-no-morph' because I had no idea that there was a stress on the e until I heard the name.

I called the Mako 'Mack-o' because, again, no idea there was a strong 'a' sound. It wasn't until I listened to the Codex entry that I figured that one out, and it still bugs me.

There are others, but those pop into my head right off the bat.

I get the distinct feeling that you're English. Honour and Honor are both correct spellings. It's just that we, in the States, do not use the extra U. Just so, the Escapist's spell-check is telling me that honour is incorrect. It's actually a pretty easy way to tell an American from an Englishman.

Also, it's Amalur. [sub]And I am not going to spell it Dishonoured when the box itself clearly says Dishonored.[/sub]

I've got a pretty firm grasp of general phonetics so I tend to pronounce things correctly. Although anything Middle-Eastern will trip me up a lot of times.

To this day, I've switched off between pronouncing 'Otogi' as "Oh-Toe-Gi" and, "Oh-Toe-Jee". Since it's a Japanese game though, it's more than likely the first pronunciation. Other than that, watching ZP and Yahtzee lets plays has me pronouncing 'aluminum' as 'aluminium'. That's about all I've got though.

Though it's not a word originally from a game, I have a friend who adores Dynasty Warriors and gets all uppity if you pronounce "dynasty" wrong.
I always thought it was "die-nasty", but apparently is should be "dinusty". Is one just an American way of saying it and the other British?

I also struggle with a bunch of League of Legends items and I don't know why. I've been playing for over a year and I'm still not sure how to pronounce the "aegis" in Aegis of the Legion. Then there's Shurelya's Reverie, I don't think I've ever nailed the full name of the item. I know full well how to say it, but it doesn't stop me telling everyone I'm building a Shyrylia's Referee.

But then the simplest of phrases coming out my mouth can end up sounding like like someone struggling with a tongue twister.

To this day I still pronounce rupees as "reh-pews" because I could not read when I was younger apparently. I also thought that Isaac from the Golden Sun series was pronounced "Ee-sok-a" for one reason or another. It actually makes the game a little more personal in a weird, stupid way.

Click on the little volume speaker thing to have it say it, maybe the british way of saying it is die nasty, but it is definitely dynasty according to dictionary.com, and that's the only way i've ever heard it pronounced.
