Honestly, I'm sorry but I have to agree here. I have played many MMOs and WoW was just...okay. Honestly, the only reason it's popular is the same reason the Wii is popular (though I'm not saying the wii is dumb!) It is something so dumbed down that the masses can play against seasoned gamers. Games which are superior (like Ultima Online back in it's hay-day) simply never became ridiculously popular because it took some time, skill, and thought to understand them and be successful at them. It's like: You'll never get my mom to sit down and play Left 4 Dead, but she'll have a blast with Wii Sports for 2 hours. I mean hell, my sister who berated my video game habit for over ten years started playing WoW.Rajin Cajun said:WoW is the epitome of shit.

Don't confuse accessible with "dumbed down."KarmicToast said:Honestly, I'm sorry but I have to agree here. I have played many MMOs and WoW was just...okay. Look, at the risk of trolling, or just being harsh over all, I still say no, just no. It's not even an opinion from me at this point. Sure I don't like WoW, but then again I don't like MMORPGs in general really my own like or dislike for WoW or Walmart in general is entirely a moot point when it comes to you argument.toastybuds said:It is inevitable my friend. Personally, me and my broadsword can't bloody wait.
Runescape, Bwhahahah. I recall when that game was actually fun, when you could monopolize the market, and rip off stupid little kids. Good times, twas only the beginning of my business skills. It taught me so much about pricing, supply and demand, simple ideas like that that would eventually lead me to where I am today. There used to be a solid eBay market for gold too, I was only 13 years old when I was selling 10M gold increments on eBay for 250$ a pop. This was prior to the "Asian gold farming" that would eventually ensue, but I was in there while it was fresh. I had established multiple customers who would repurchase a few times, building rapport and trust with them. Depending on the luck I was having, I could end up with 50M in a night. It brings me backThe Shade said:I played WoW for about a week, but got so bored of it I went back to Runescape.
Yeah...that's right.
WoW's popular, but Blizzard is by no means one of the most successful companies of all time.

Thar be your most profitable companies of 2008. Blizzard doesn't make the Top 50, you may note.
Do you listen to yourself when you speak?toastybuds said:I originally posted this a response to something about the price of games, but got kind of distracted and went on.. anywho, i'd like to hear some opinions
Everyone needs to start playing WoW. 20(maybe more or less? w/e) Years from now, it'll be like the juggernaut of the (video game) world. There will only two real companies in the world. In their current form, Walmart and Blizzard. And they will control the entire world. Picture this..
Walmart shoppers + world of warcraft + full time job (EDIT: WORKING FOR WALMARTBLIZZARD. OH GOD.) (that returns the money right back into walmart. Outside of housing/internet/stuff like that..)= communism
So now you're saying, "OMG No you're dumb because wow sucks blah blah." and to you I say.. Please take a second to realize how disgustingly popular this game has become. Not only because it's easier to find, and have a computer that works well with it than some pot at school, but because it's down right fun. I could go on about this for a few more paragraphs, but maybe later.
Onward..
This will then travel to plague the entire world. Over time, there will only be two countries. One being for the more powerful, greatly superior Horde, and the other, the pathetic Alliance. Our wars will be faught in the battle grounds, because there are no wars going on the real world. Walmart has already won that one.
World of Walmartcraft
It's very clear to me, this will happen.

Fair enough. I'll restate: I believe that WoW does not have complex enough strategy, variety, or story to relate to intelligent and/or skilled gamers. I do not think that everyone who plays is neither intelligent nor skilled, I simply believe that those individuals play because any game is more fun when most people you know play it, and because the abstract concept of "WoW" is much loftier than the final product. Now, my comments have nothing to do with how well it was designed. WoW is not made for art, or gaming. WoW was designed for, as you said, accessibility and cold hard cash. At that, they have done a marvelous job.CantFaketheFunk said:Don't confuse accessible with "dumbed down."KarmicToast said:Honestly, I'm sorry but I have to agree here. Video games > Booksgckearns said:Disregarding the fairly blatant sarcasm intertwined in the OP as well as all the illegitimate and subjective statements everyone has made in regards to said sarcasm (i.e. alliance vs. horde, WoW is or isn't good), I will reply with the same fun-loving spirit of the thread after inputing my thoughts that:
While Blizzard and Wal-Mart are seeming to be successful at what they want to be doing, there are plenty of other big names in all sorts of media and market divisions that this same scenario could be suggested for. On some book forum somewhere, there could be a Harry Potter fan suggesting that the author is slowly poisoning the minds with strategic subliminal messaging designed to slowly funnel control of the world over to him as well as convince the readers to recommend the book to everyone they know. (I don't really think that, it's just a hypothetical thought)
In conclusion: Ninjas already rule the world and this is exactly how they want everything. The only thing ninjas have to fear is fear itself...and Chuck Norris.
Yeah I'm not being 100% serious, just a thought about how life crippling Warmart and wow are, tied to a theory of how they could rule the world together. Play along?Isaac Dodgson said:Look, at the risk of trolling, or just being harsh over all, I still say no, just no. It's not even an opinion from me at this point. I don't find it witty, amusing, and full of satire, which admittedly I assume you were going for, but if I'm wrong and you're completely serious, than you my friend have bigger issues than I thought. Giving you the benefit of the doubt, and assuming you were trying to be ironic or something, I'll point out for your benefit that (at least for me anyway) you've completely failed, and you've only succeeded in eliciting a small amount of annoyance and an audible "Are you kidding?" remark from myself, and though I can't speak for everyone I imagine that similar responses were evoked initially, followed by the slue of counter points that have been made thus far.
If I'm a "Buzzkill" fine, whatever I'll live with that, but this isn't entertaining at all, and to me it's boarder line pointless...At the end of the day, that's just my opinion on this situation, but I can't be the only one remotely feeling the same way am I?
I fundamentally disagree with you on every level. Not complex enough strategy or variety? Look at the fights in Sunwell, or the first version of Naxxramas. Look at C'Thun, look at the new Oculus / Eye of Eternity that has your character actually on a dragon using their abilities. Look at Lake Wintergrasp, which is a siege/defense PvP objective. In Wrath of the Lich King, the story from WC3 is tied to the plot more closely than ever before, and with phasing zones it can actually progress instead of remaining static (for your character at least). How about the Wrathgate quest line?KarmicToast said:Fair enough.
