I just wanted to what people thought of the latest expansion. I'm new to the site because I'm usually on MMO-Champion. I, personally like the expansion idea but I feel that it's just a filler until the Void expansions. Thoughts?

As someone who was introduced to Warcraft via WC3, played and enjoyed the other RTS games, never got into WoW, but has followed the lore and bought numerous novels/comics/sourcebooks, I'm...eh?

Commenting only from a story standpoint, WoW seems caught between a rock and a hard place. On one hand, it seems stuck in a perpetual need to one-up itself. We went from Outland, to the Lich King, to Deathwing, to a breather in Pandaria, to eventually come to the Burning Legion, and during that time, we were informed that the big bads (Burning Legion) were dwarfed by even bigger bads (Void Lords). So if it ever comes to dealing with the Old Gods/Void Lords, what's the bigger bigger bad?

You'd think I might like the idea of a "back to basics" approach with Alliance vs. Horde, but how many times have we had that? It's the de facto state of things, and we already arguably had that be the focus of an expansion in Mists.

So, I will say I'm still overall invested in the Warcraft universe, but I feel the need of the MMO to continue indefinetely isn't suited for telling an ever-continuing story at this point. Not while the status quo always has to remain to an extent.

WoW has spent years seemingly doing its absolute best to ward me off from ever playing it. So, even though this expansion does look at least a little interesting, I ain't gonna be playing it and I'm CERTAINLY not gonna be paying that atrocious monthly.

Although I support Guild Wars 2, I definitely know it's not perfect, but at the same time, it's pretty much the best MMO we have right now.

Are people still playing WoW? I've played the strategy games (1, 2 and 3) to death but I don't really like MMOs so I never got into it. But I didn't even realise it was still going. Blizzard really made a cashcow when they made that. I mean they released it in 2004. That's like, 14 years.

I have started fully getting into WOW since the end of Mist of Pandaria and I have been playing ever since.

And lots of negative pre-conceptions I had on this game by people on the internet and on this very forum aswell has been washed away.

What's so good about it compared to other MMOs, apart from its obvious longevity?

From my perspective. Lore, athmosphere, music, fairly easy to pick up and play, and compared to its contemporaries has better combat and controls than other MMOs I have played, and I mean WOW as it is now, and the fun of rolling a different character with the Race/Class/and Outfit customizations of your choice (I mean aiming for a Worgen Rogue with the Outlaw specilization to make him like a Bloodborne Witch Hunter).

And I am familiar with the Warcraft world at this point. I almost know every place in Azeorth, Outland, and Argus to a tee.

I've dubbed it "Warlords 2: Electric Boogaloo", so I fully expect it to be another filler expansion. I would skip it, but I don't want dog the boys in my guild.

Eeeeh no:

From all the things I digged around this is far from a filler expansion than Warlords or even Mist of Pandaria. For one Queen Azshara, leader of the Naga, is heavily involved in all this aswell the Old Gods, especially N'zoth. And the mere fact that Azeroth at the moment is bleeding after Sargeras stabbed the planet. I calling it now that the Old Gods wants to take over Azeroth through the wound that Sargeras left behind, like N'zoth is gonna suck the azerite dry to empower himself. And heck the events going on the Horde and the Alliace is fairly important, people are thinking that Sylvanas is heading straight to being another Garrosh to be killed in a Raid, Vol'jin might be coming back with Thrall involved, and both factions lost major cities in both regions. Now the alliace controls most of Eastern Kingdoms and the Horde controls most of Kalimdor, lets just say it won't be a filler xpac for long once the Patch Content arrives

I'm a shameless Cata-baby (rolling around TBC on a friend's account doesn't count), so World of Warcraft is still great for me. I won't miss Artifact weapons and I'm excited that the team are taking a more narrative approach to questing and progression with every expansion. Battle looks to be one of the best in terms of pure storytelling. Being a dirty, casual, RP-er I'm looking forward to more Allied races too.

Yeah, I don't play WOW on regular basis anymore, play it like a few weeks a year, play LOTRO a month/year as well, more or less - LOTRO's gameplay and slow pace of fights are definitely highly frustrating when you've played enough WOW before - saying this as a Tolkien / LOTR near-fanboy.

That said, I still think Blizzard is stupid with their retcon. Now, Old Gods - which is, local gods from some remote planet - are more powerful than fallen Titans and their goons (as in the Burning Legion), even after said fallen Titans actually wiped out their former mates (Pantheon). Of course, Sargeras actually destroying the Pantheon was stupid to begin with - Algalon's mere existence makes no sense anymore, for a starter. But that kind of stupid was already there at BC...
Like others, I also wish Blizzard would just stop with the retarded Horde/Alliance forever war. Just finis it one way or the other and be done with it, it makes literally no sense at this point in Azeroth's history - heck, it already made no sense back in 2004's original release, but it's way worse nowadays, after all both sides have been through together.

No it's the void lords are more powerful than fallen Titans.

The Old Gods are spawn of the Void Lords, the physical manefistations of the Void itself.

To use a Lovecraft example, The Void Lords are the Outer Gods with a Darkness/Shadow motiff, and the Old Gods are the Great Old Ones.

It looks fun.

Im looking forward to something a little more grounded, but at the same time, it'll be funny to go from being world-hopping heroes, defeating demons and literal gods, to going back to a little faction squabble.

Im sure that there will be something behind the scenes, though, like and old god or something from the void.

I've already pre-ordered the game, anyway, so we'll see what happens.

To me the faction conflict is what makes Warcraft, Warcraft.

The whole franchise is founded on Alliance vs Horde, Orcs vs Humans, etc.

I'm really concerned about class design, but other than that I am optimistic.

When hasn't there been concern for Class Design in this game, every expansion its like this.

Right now the popular opinion in the WOW forums is that all classes were at their best during Mist of Pandaria.

I really don't give a fuck about the story. Warcraft's biggest weakness is the collection of tired fantasy tropes, Lovecraft references, and memes it calls a story. I play for the gameplay (raiding specifically), and it looks like they are doing their best to fuck that up too.

Then why call it a filler expansion if you don't care about the backdrop of the story?
