It's a massive timesink and there's really no skill in it rather than familiarity (at least with PvP). I dunno, people hate it because most WoW nerds are all the same.
I have to call bullshit. Those of you who say the game requires no skill have obviously never played the game. Sure, it's "easy" to get to a high a level, go kill 10 million wolves a'la south park. But the raids at end game require A LOT of skill. Who to heal, when? When to hit the switch. When to move, when to stay still and it's not just knowing it, it's bloody doing it, consistently correctly.

If you think the game takes no skill go fight Gorefiend or bloodboil in BT. What? You died 17 times? I thought this game was easy? Nubs.

You know, it's funny how you state your opinion as if it's a fact. You think the gameplay sucks, yet there are millions upon millions of people who play it every day and love it. Funny huh? I know popularity doesn't always mean something, but I'm pretty this many people make quite a statement.

Also, what exactly do you mean by 'the best'? Does 'the best' mean 'be able to beat everyone in the game'? Because if that's what your after, what game DOES cater to that? It's actually relatively easy to be good at WoW, because it doesn't require twitchiness. It requires good understanding of your abilities and talents. Also, there are both PVE and PVP zones for characters of pretty much every level. How exactly do you HAVE TO hit the level cap again?
..."one of" the best. Not 'the' best. I don't view it as a competitive game anyway. I'm just saying if you want to experience endgame raids, etc, etc...You need to play for a long time.

If I want to see a certain level of Unreal Tournament on Godlike, I can go look at how it is. I don't need to beat it on 7 other difficulties to see it.

Popularity does not mean the game is good.

Ask anyone you know playing the game. Their friends brought them into it. They're on a server with their friends. They're playing because they play with their friends. It's a social thing. Something you could replace with ANYTHING ELSE. Diablo, Starcraft, any game with a half-decent chat function. Or hell, xfire or steam, or anything. That's all it is.

I have met zero people who play WoW because "they saw it, and it looked interesting."

It was a previous interest in the Warcraft franchise, or as a social thing.

The gameplay is horrible. That is why I hate it. That is why many people hate it. This is not my opinion. This is the opinion of anyone who plays other games for immersion, thinking, strategy, interesting gameplay, and not to talk with their friends.

@Valiance: What's so horrible about the gameplay anyway? I just don't get it. It's okay to not like the way you play WoW, but why say the gameplay is bad? I play it and I love it. I don't see how it has bad gameplay and you can trust me on that I am an experienced gamer. I can tell bad from good gameplay and WoW isn't bad in my opinion. It's not buggy or glitchy. It works fine.

No, actually, I'm pretty sure that is your opinion. :)

Please explain to me the interest in it. I cannot seem to get a response from anyone here about why people like the gameplay.

Edit: I feel like I'm being intolerant, but I truly cannot understand the fascination.

I can't get a response from you why you don't like it, either.

Why do I like it? I already told you, unless you have a completely different definition of gameplay.

I think it's the fact that game doesn't reward skill.

Because I hate RPG's. Unless its the RPG-7 or maybe Fallout 3, but with some modding it is much more FPS then RPG. The idea of leveling up has always disgusted me, your characters skills should be based off of your skills, not because you got 1000 XP.

It doesn't touch on what the gameplay is, at all.
And it's incredibly buggy. I can get under or over pretty much every major city in the game, at least "until they fixed walljumping." I can be in combat and a mob is evade bugging my attacks, but still being able to hit me.

WoW gameplay...I'm being too vague.
I personally do not enjoy the combat system.
I mentioned a lot of other things I dislike about the PvP system in a previous post that no one read. I mentioned many things about the PvE endgame in a previous post as well.

What are you examples of bad gameplay, and good gameplay?

Many gamers want engaging combat, if combat is what you're going to be required to do all the time...And the combat boils down to this:

-Get a target (leftclick)
-Autoattack or spam DPS ability (rightclick/1111111111111111)
-Repeat.

Sure, there's stuns, there's interrupts, there's fears...Yes, I'm glad it's interesting, but I also don't quite enjoy the idea of "Oh, he feared me, I need to wait for a bit while the game takes my keyboard and mouse away from me for a while."

Taking away player interactions, player choices...It just doesn't appeal to me, and I don't know why it appeals to other people...Does it add strategy or something?

What do you mean "what kind of skill"? Buttonmashing or doing actions automatically =/= skill. Grinding 30 hours just to get a piece of equipment =/= skill. Winning with something because it's too easy or you got lucky =/= skill.

Understand?

Okay, I played WoW once upon a time, and I hated it. I was berated in chat for picking the wrong class, for rolling Alliance, and in general for my level. Plus, the word "ninja'd" came up a few times. As a sidenote, if I wanted the same kind of MMO gameplay I get FOR FREE with games like 9Dragons or Korean MMOs, I'd just play a free MMO. The communities on free MMOs won't call me a retard, which I guess is one of the privileges gained from playing World of Warcraft. WoW has nothing new to offer me.

So when I complained to the people I knew who constantly chatted up WoW, or even spoke up about my opinions on the game, I got the same answer: "Oh, you just haven't played." When I told them I had, they told me I just hadn't played enough. Or that I hadn't played with the right people. I had this to say:

"Look, I played, and it was like a punch to the balls. You're telling me that since I wasn't punched in the balls by the right person, or I wasn't punched in the balls repeatedly enough, I'm wrong? Screw that! A punch is still a punch, and it'll probably hurt more the more it happens."

When expansion packs were brought up (this was on the cusp of BC coming out), I added, "And I'm not gonna buy add-ons so that they can punch me in the balls in new and interesting ways."

In short, what I'm saying is that I believe I'm fairly justified in not liking the game.

He's about to tell you that copy-pasting a talent specialization off Elitistjerks is skill, and that knowing what mob does what in a dungeon is difficult, when all the information is at your fingertips on Wowhead or Thottbott or (other websites I don't feel like naming because I can't spell them). MOON MEANS SHEEP, SQUARE MEANS TRAP, KILL SKULL.

I hate it because of how addicted people get to it. My brother is a guild leader and he rarely stops playing, it's ridiculous.

From a gaming perspective:

I hate the gameplay, it's so basic, almost turn-based and barely interactive. It's just grinding; boring and repetitive.

I hate the interactions, people seem to wait around for ages to do raids that look so dull.

I hate the graphics, they're so poor.

I hate the design, the user interface is so unintuitive.

I hate the character design, it's so typically unoriginal, humans, orcs, dwarves, elves etc. Yea it was okay back in the days of the RTS games, was pushing it by Warcraft 3.

I think it's ridiculous that it's always "WOW SUCKS!!1!1" and the reasons given would apply to every single other MMO that exists or has ever existed. I got news for you, gentlemen, but WoW wasn't the first and it won't be the last. I guess some people just get miffed because it's popular.

I suppose we hate it because it's popular, yes. Much like everything else that's hugely popular, it's bland, overproduced, and we have to pay money to bask in its bland overproducedness. So...yeah, I guess we do dislike it because it's popular.

I started playing WoW a few years ago. Then, a couple of months later I took a step back, and said to myself "Why am I still playing this? I'm not having fun..." Then I stopped. If people like it, then good for them. I prefer playing Little Big Planet.
