Worlds Gaming has VASTLY overlooked

We have a fuck ton of space marines. Thats the only way I can really say it. It seems like every shooter these days takes place sometime in the future and involves a bipedal tank lumbering around spewing bullets and one liners. Likewise, every RPG takes place either in the ancient past or in the far off space age. Either way you're still killing giant spiders, its just whether or not those spiders are painted chrome. It seems that almost every genre has just plopped itself down in a comfortable time period or two and is now crossing its arms and refusing to leave.

Now this isn't too bad as long as they keep finding ways to make the games fun and interesting, but most fall prey to gimmicks instead of actual innovation. Its the basic formula of "You're a macho twat in a suit of power armor who can_________" and then you just insert some single gameplay element into the blank and roll with it. It could be slowing down time, deforming the terrain, having awkward sexual innuendo with a hologram, whatever, it still has the aforementioned ubiquitous power armor and space attached. Likewise,RPGs seem to just parrot mechanics that are decades old, maybe with one or two random things thrown in. They tend to do this, starting in some idyllic happy land of sunshine and smiles that then suddenly takes an abrupt detour in to dystopia town. All this always seems to happen either in some magic fantasy land either in medieval times or just in space.

Now it seems to me that there are a great deal of times, places and ideas that game developers are overlooking. Bioshock is a great example of things most people are overlooking, setting their game in a uniquely steampunk world. So, my question to you is, what worlds/times would you like to see more of in games?

I must have missed the secret levels in the call of duty series with the space marines and the bipedal tanks.

I must be honest with you, I have never heard of this unit of measurement before... Although playing in some jungle style environment, were random animals could kill you, and enemies could come out of nowhere, and you could climb trees would be quite cool I think, as long as they set it in the right time period.

Agreed, though "the kids" are all into this genre of FPSs - Space Super Soldier who single handedly saves the (X's) from the evil (X's). So pure and simple, game developers want sales, and what is trendy is what they will make.

Personally i would like to see more games that are CoD style but different in that it is wars pre-guns- ie sword+bow battles on a much larger scale than games where you adventure with a sword and bow and take 2,3 5 at tops enemies at once.

Also I wouldnt mind a game that involves cookies. ( :p )

This unit is a new gamer developed unit made especially for space marines to understand ( :p )

Cybertron.
As long as they do something with it and not give us another mess like Scrapland.

Actually...BioShock might not be the best example really...I mean, it was System Shock 2...UNDER WAAAAAAAATER! (Cue dramatic thunder!) That said, it was still a pretty unique game in it's own right. However, my point is, that while the setting is important, if you don't have a plot or game to hinge it on it's worth diddly squat.

I have to wonder, would BioShock be a worse game if it was a direct sequel to SS2? If something like Dead Space was set on a submarine instead of a ship would it suffer too much?

Or you could set up an HUD on your oven and bake some real ones.

If they made the character that died genuinely loveable and you feel a sense of attatchment to him then yes, that would be damn awesome and show people how games can be serious.

how to make people say your game is original:
make it all steam punk-y
make it all noir-y
set it under the the sea

seriously, we've been heralding these themes as original for a while now.

Fuck ton is a very British expression. It simply means lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots[/idiocy]

However it does seem like many games have you play a vital role in winning whatever war your character is embroiled in. It would be interesting to see if there are any FPS's where your character DOESN'T REALLY make a difference. But I suppose were this the case it'd seem like there was no point to it all.

Is that a metric or stanard fuck ton?

I think I'd like to see more team based games in the style of TF2, but not nessacarily combat oriented. Like two colonies of ants moving to collect food, some are fast, some are strong, some can dig tunnels and traps to make moving to and from the flag quicker. No combat abilities untill the first or second update, and them limit them ridiculously. It's just a thought.

metric fuck ton. And to answer the question, I'd like to see a western RPG take place in modern day.

-More Steampunk (the proper kind, with the top hat)
-Apparantly one of the possibilities for Assassin's Creed II was an Aztec theme. This could have been really interesting
-Some proper space marines, i.e not the usual macho twats, but the pious warrior monks who get filled with zealous rage at you for just existing, let alone daring to step on the same planet as them.
