Agreed, though "the kids" are all into this genre of FPSs - Space Super Soldier who single handedly saves the (X's) from the evil (X's). So pure and simple, game developers want sales, and what is trendy is what they will make.

Personally i would like to see more games that are CoD style but different in that it is wars pre-guns- ie sword+bow battles on a much larger scale than games where you adventure with a sword and bow and take 2,3 5 at tops enemies at once.

Also I wouldnt mind a game that involves cookies. ( :p )
I'm a "kid" per se, and I too can't stand the Space Marine trend. Aliens was the hight of the character archtype fame, and Halo 3 (in my opinion) is rock bottom.

I kinda agree, more Wild West and Steampunk settings would be nice. Dystopia isn't bad either in my opinion.

Still have to say, playing in Venice with a bunch of Da Vinci esq contraptions would be sweet. Also a 3:10 to Yuma game.

There are a "fuck ton" of war FPS games as well, but for some reason, the majority of them focus on WWII and occasionally WWI. And when they do deviate from the norm, they games usually come out as RTS. I would love to see a Civil or Revolutionary War FPS.

FEUDAL NINJAS!!!!!!!!!!!

Make it AC parkour on steroids and give us shurikens and stuff and have it take place (completely open world, not the slightly open concept of AC) in an epic ninja empire war thing!!!!!!!

NINJAS FTW

I've said this many times. Skies of Arcadia and Valkyria Chronicles.

EDIT: A Steampunk/Cyberpunk game would be interesting.

The prehistoric era. Dinosaurs + women in loincloths = £££. It's so obvious that it'd sell, so why hasn't it been made yet? The only game involving cavemen that I can remember is BC, and that was cancelled ages ago.

Why not pacific rim... playing as the Marquesians or the Maori. It could be kinda like a tribal action adventure.

The DREAM WORLD! Kinda Psychonauts only inside dreams rather than brains. I love games that kind of make you question whether what's happening is real and whether you're character is insane or not (Silent Hill).

Also, natural disaster games would be fun - trying to escape and survive in a tsunami/earthquake/volcano (although it would probably have to have been caused by a shadowy conspiracy that you have to unfold)?

One thing that was awesome was in Fallout 3 at the beginning, you really felt like you were struggling to survive - drinking out of toilets, conserving ammo as much as possible, fleeing battles and generally just being an average bloke thrown into this horrible dystopian world. Later on, things went a bit too shooty shooty, but that "just surviving" feel - i'd like more of that. Maybe "I Am Alive" can help deliver?

If they made the character that died genuinely loveable and you feel a sense of attatchment to him then yes, that would be damn awesome and show people how games can be serious.
The Quake 4 would have been much, much better. And being Stroggified wouldn't have been like a "Eh, whatever" moment.

Anyway, I really have to agree with the OP on this one- why the hell can't we have a game like Silent Hill 2, where the main character has lied himself into disillusion to the point at which he hardly knows reality? Or a game where you are hardly in reality at all, and you have to fight simple random objects?

I do agree that games should explore more options in terms of general setting, though I really have no problem with the ones that are already there; as astounding as it may be, I actually enjoy being a walking death machine in space or medieval sorcerer when the mood catches me.

However, I can't help but point out that the OPs intro rant about originality seems to have clawed its way out of Yahtzee like a freaking chestburster.

I would like to see more Games set in 'the far off space age'. Not hundreds years in the future like Halo, but thousands of years in the future. However, most of the games set in this period seem to be space strategy games like Sins of a Solar Empire and Genesis Rising.

How about a Science Fiction stealth game set 2000 years in the future where Humanity is the Galaxy's dominant species (or the only species, but very divided). All of Humanity is genetically improved and/or Cyborgs. You play as a (well written) agent/assassin/spy who uses a wide range of skills/weaponry/psychic powers to go on a sneaky bollocks adventure round the galaxy. Add RPG and Sandbox game play to season.

Sad but true, all the good ideas are gone.

I would like to see a game setting that is in like, I dunno, a completely unique and original place. Sure the same "space age or mideival" time periods are overused but there must be some things that havent been beaten to death yet?

What about combining two old and crusty ideas into an origanal one.
Like a norse barbarian who steals an alien spaceship when earth is invaded in medievil times.

We have a fuck ton of space marines.
Is that a metric or stanard fuck ton?

I think I'd like to see more team based games in the style of TF2, but not nessacarily combat oriented. Like two colonies of ants moving to collect food, some are fast, some are strong, some can dig tunnels and traps to make moving to and from the flag quicker. No combat abilities untill the first or second update, and them limit them ridiculously. It's just a thought.
So...An RTS...?

My favorite setting for a game would have to be a free-running mirror's edge-esque game. Except instead of rooftops, it's in the Amazon or some similar rainforesty thing. You have the ability to climb basically anything and you must get from point A to point B, for whatever reason, in X time.

However, the game I want to see most of all, is actually one of those aforementioned space marines games. My idea went something like: Dude's just moved into a human colony on the far reaches of human territory. Shortly thereafter, aliens attack without warning and basically slaughter every living thing on the face of the planet. Our hero barely manages to escape and makes it back to Earth to warn people. Throughout the game you fight on various different planets and environments to stop the complete annihilation of humanity. Then towards the end, the humans develop some biological weapon that will exterminate their enemies. You take the mission to deliver the weapon, drop it down, and on your way out stumble on papers with English writing on the alien mothership. You grab em and run and then the bomb goes off and all the aliens are dead. Final cutscene of the game is the hero reading the papers and discovering that the aliens he had just killed were the last few remnants of their society who had attacked in revenge, because the humans had tested an experimental device on their homeworld that wound up destroying it and slaughtering their people.
