My vote is either Tidus from FFX, because the only thing worse than dying is to find out you never really existed in the first place.

Or Sergent Avery Johnson in Halo 3, because he survived the Covenant and the Flood all those times (not just in the games but in the books as well) just to get killed by a floating nerdy lightbulb.

Everyone in Call of Duty 4. All of them were quite emotional. Especially the Nuclear Blast one with the Marine you play as.

Almost anybody in a GTA after I get a flamethrower.

For cinematic deaths, Sgt Johnson has a horribly ironic but none to horrible death. My vote for the worst "important" character's death is going to Bowser in all the Mario games. He falls in lava, is pushed from his clown thing, explodes, falls in lava again, is jumped on, and hit with all his own attacks.

P.S. Crash Bandicoot has some pretty gruesome, albeit creative and funny, deaths if you experiment a little.

This thread should have SPOILERS plastered across the title.

I'm a little confused, though. By "worst" do you mean saddest, lamest, most gruesome... what?

what do you mean by "worst"?

Do you mean the crappiest ever conceived by a game designer?

Most dramatically contrary? Ironic? Unusual? Gruesome? Emotionally stirring?

This is the problem about asking the worst of something intrinsically bad, it needs further definition.

Maybe Wendy from Rule of Rose, because it is bad enough to have a half naked middle aged man come and kill everyone in your orphanage at the bequest of a preteen cross-dresser. But when you are that pre-teen cross dresser... It just hits on so many levels.

That first guy you see in Bioshock that gets killed by a splicer before you ever get to do anything.

I sometimes wonder if he even knew who "Atlas" really was...

I'm going to post what I originally thought this thread was about...

I was fighting the Nyx Avatar in Persona 3 the other night, and got her to the final Arcana, and to literally a sliver of health after over an hour-long battle, and was killed thanks to a stroke of bad luck. Then I tried it again, and the exact same thing happened.

That was an awful death.

MASS EFFECT SPOILERS

When the game makes you choose between Ashley and Kaiden (Kaidan?) on Virmire or Ilos or whatever it is. I mean, the odds of those two being your favorite squad members are pretty low so it'll be obvious which you should choose, and I respect the game for putting such a grave choice in front of you, but damn. I really felt bad that I couldn't save both.

MASS EFFECT SPOILERS OVER

Failing Hangar 18 at something like 96% in GH2 was rather lame. Closest thing that game has to death.

Playing Oblivion when the slope suddenly turns into a 70% downgrade and your walking speed suddenly catapults you into space and you fall all the way down the mountain skimming a few inches above the ground but you can't move backwards and then you hit the bottom and die. They really should fix that.

Coolest enemy death is when a rat or wolf tries to use it's rush attack on you while above you on one of those slopes and it just flies over your head and falls off the mountain.

Worst as in crappiest has to go to Eli from Half Life 2 Ep 2. It came out of no where, barely fitted in with the plot and really was just a way to leave us excited about Ep 3.

My worst death award goes to Wesker from Resident Evil. Anyone who came back from the dead really, but his is the most obvious; clearly they couldn't even die properly.

I agree with the guy who said COD4: after so much, they get iced by the bastards at the very end.

Claves from Eternal Sonata. It took about for her to die because she just droned on and on about nothing.
God. Eternal Sonata was a good game, but according to the lead designer people should go on and on to themselves for about two minutes stating the painstakingly obvious.

You'd be forgiven for thinking Eternal Sonata was an opera, the amount of time it took Claves to finally croak.

What's worse, is that since she's a sterling example of Magikarp Power, she's rubbish all the time up to that point, so that scene's probably the longest piece of screentime she's gotten up to that point. (still, get her beyond about level 90 and she's the second strongest character in the game after Allegretto).
