Everybody here is hyped up on the number of death. id be more concerned on the actual atrocity. The vikings created the worst torture / death in history (the bloody eagle) which ill describe in another thread. Alternatively Vlad impaled half of his own army and posted them in front of his own abode, to scare off others. I'm not quite sure on who the worst would be considering it changes via perspective on peoples own values on human life.
I'm pretty sure he impaled Ottomans to scare off other Ottomans who would launch an assault against him. That was both to defend his kingdom as well as his hatred for what a certain ottoman sultan did to his brother. Not sure about the finer details though.

thanks for correcting me. i was a little sketchy on details :p

Mao had quite the body count, but before he took control 80% of the Chinese were exploited by rich land owners, and the entire country was being exploited by foreign powers like Britain and Japan. Mao caused massive industrialism and helped China become the global powerhouse it is today, 3rd in the world in terms of national GDP. Also, let's not forget that before he took control, China's illiteracy rate was about 80% and the average life expectancy was about 35 years, whereas by the time he died the life expectancy had doubled and the illiteracy rate was less than 10%. I'd say he did more good than evil.

Even Hitler and Stalin had some good points, but I'd say that their atrocities far outweigh any benefit, same with Mussolini, because he wasn't only a brutal dictator, he was even bad at that. Still, I'd have to go with Stalin, because he didn't just kill dissidents, he practically erased them from history, and for me that puts him at the top.

Actually, Hirohito and Prince Yasuhiro Asaka were pretty bad too, with the Rape of Nanking. They estimate the death toll as about 300,000 for that, and that's pretty much all civilians. It's a tough contest.

Mao was certainly an evil dictator, but was he neccessarily a bad one? Leaders have to keep their people in check - and in doing so, VERY good leaders kill people...

a LOT of people...
MILLIONS of people...

Stalin because he was a paranoid dick. He created a famine in the Ukraine that killed millions because the peasants began slaughtering the livestock they had for food/hides instead of giving it up to the collective farms. Greater good my ass.

Ghengis Khan. Or possibly Nero or Caligula. Hitler was attrocious, but there have been so many attrocious dictators... but let's not forget about the morons who LET people like this take and then RETAIN power, the PEOPLE if anyone should suck it up and take responsibility it's alla dems wat voted, didn't vote, didn't speak up, didn't fight, didn't resist, didn't point out the obvious, didn't care, weren't interested or couldn't be bothered.
People say all that it takes for evil to prevail is for good men to do nothing. I would argue that someone who does nothing is NOT a good man. (/woman to avoid sexism pedantry predators, they scare me!!!)

I think a more interesting question is how there are arguably evil dictators in power in the world right now opressing people right now and why we're doing fuck all about it.

Well ok in terms of cruelty and batshit insanity I'd go with Hitler.
But if it comes down to plain numbers I thinks it's a tie between Stalin and Mao.
And one honorable mention goes to Kim Yong Il just for his craziness and as the one person on earth you somehow can't take seriously as a dictator.

I'm confused... is BAD dictator a horrible man who does horrible things, or is it a dictator who is not very good at his job?
In any case, I'll have to go for the facists (mussolini, franco, hitler). and maybe Saddam...
(isn't any dictator the worst dictator? I mean, who was the worst child-rapist? The worst serial killer?)
Pol Pot is also high up on the list...

Any political leader who's policies were claimed to be in accordance to "God's plans/will/wishes" it seems. Someone please prove me wrong, I haven't done the needed research.
Stalin and Mao were Atheists. Hitler was Christian, but was not really pushing the whole religion thing as much as he was pushing an ethnic and cultural thing that included a Christian background.

My personal vote is probably for Mao. Dude killed people and fucked up an economy so horribly for decades as well as destroying the political system.
Stalin was not much better, but at least the USSR could function after he was done with it.

Stalin-Hitler tie, as my U.S. teacher always said, "Don't be fooled about Stalin because he's on the winning side, Him and Hitler are sharing a cup of lava in the extra crispy part of hell" Favorite teacher ever.

Also someone asked why Hitler/Wife commited suicide and he began to explain "Because the Russians would do bad things to the Wife, Do bad things over and over." Again, greatest teacher.
I was just going to say Hitler, but this post made me tie Stalin-Hitler.

Hirohito and Asaka really had no control of the government or the military at that point. It is sort of like blaming King George VI for appeasing Hitler before World War II. Not that what happened in China during World War II wasn't horrible, it just lacks a strong figure head that really caused it.
