You spend the entire campaign travelling to this vault that's supposed to have all this amazing treasure inside it.
And what do you find when you finally get there?
Nothing.
Yup. Pissed off me and a friend of mine to no end. We both enjoyed everything up to that point, but we both haven't touched the game since due to the ending. I felt so cheated.

Fallout 3 had a bad ending? Guffaws abound.

It seems those that adhere to this statement have never played Knights of the Old Republic 2. Fallout 3's slightly weak ending looks like award-winning writing of the highest calibre compared to KotOR 2's drivel.
KotOR 2's ending was bad.
But that was because they ran out of time and had to literally skimp out on the actual ending.
It's not even considered canonical.
Still better than Fallout 3's ending.
I mean, seriously?
A super mutant and a ghoul, both not only able to survive the radiation, they even get healthier by it, and they just arbitrarily refuses, forcing you to die for no good reason. Which is even more of a kick in the balls because there's no warning when you cross the point of no return, so if you save past it, you're going to have to start over from the beginning if you want to keep playing the game.
Bethesda even retconned the ending with DLC later on.

Well, it contains a monster that gives a metric fuckton of XP and has a fairly high droprate of loot.
Still, nothing compares to Crawmerax.
Holy shit that thing drops loot.

Nikopol, from the Be Mine Bundle, worst adventure game ever.

Seriously, after having to scour through 5 different guides to solve these fucking overly complicated puzzles and stopping an ancient egiptian god from conquering a dystopian, futuristic Paris (of all places in the wide world), all they could think about as a "proper ending" is a fucking monologue about "rotten flesh" and worms!??, WTF!??

I only payed $1 for the whole bundle and I still feel ripped off by this godawful piece of shit. I need to replay Broken Sword to take out this bad taste out of my mouth.

As for other media, Evangelion is the first thing that comes up to mind. Seriously, W T F. Saint Seiya's Hades saga takes an honorable mention, seriously, one single episode to fight against the god of the fucking underworld!??

For movies, I think I can certainly agree with The Departed, although a great movie, it's ending was... meh.

Huh, looks like I'm one of the few people who absolutely loved the ending to FFX...mostly because I wanted to see Tidus die in hellfire, but thats besides the point, anyways...

I know the OP says film/book/game but I feel it deserves to be said, the last 2 episodes of Seinfeld, such a disappointing ending to such a great show. It wasn't very funny, and it was kind of depressing too

First, books. I was incredibly disappointed by the Cirque du Freak series. The author tried to tie every loose plot hole in all thirteen books in the last one hundred pages. "They're secretly brothers! And this guy's their father! Why? Because I'm the author and fuck you." I had the same problem with the Hunger Games books. The twilight books (I read them so I could accurately insult the people that also read them) were very anticlimactic as well. Not to mention everything else was shit.
Next, movies. No Country for Old Men felt like the ending was supposed to be meaningful, but it was too vague and uninteresting to piece together. Gran Torino's ending just felt insulting to Clint Eastwood. He's motherfucking Clint Eastwood! He can't die! What the hell?
Games? I finish every RPG game I play (no matter how shitty it is), and so if the game is crap I don't expect much from the ending. Non-RPG's I don't expect to have good stories, so it's not surprising if the end is poorly done as well.

I lol'd.

The ending to RDR I loved. I've truly loved some games, but that ending has moved me the most I think.

Than I'm confused as to why it seems unappealing to you. I guess if you were bummed out about it's presentation, that's understandable, but the way it did present the ending was why it was so haunting to me. The cinematography, the closing dialogue, the way they left the wife's death a cliffhanger. It was all so straightforward with no restrictions. It was vicious. It was evil. It was unsettling. Hell, it even explained the title in the closing monologue.

By the way you're leading it on, I can only see a "satisfying" ending to you as being the good guys win. It would have been acceptable, but without the main character dying, there wouldn't have been that message and overall theme of the darkness of man to close it out. In a way, the story would have meant nothing without it. Just another action movie.

And I'm aware you never mentioned Oldboy. I was merely using that as an example, as they are sort of related here.
Yes, someone does not agree with your view on a movie ending. They must be close-minded or possibly stupid. Maybe they were too busy with something else to pay attention . They're probably unhappy when any film ends in any way that isn't the standard gingerbread and butterflies ending that is spoonfed to us by the film industry for all these years.

In my defense, I read them in a psychiatric hospital, while heavily sedated and otherwise medicated.
So, you thought it'd be a good idea to read twilight...while in a mental hospital? Because you obviously didn't have enough issues at the time.

In all seriousness? for movies it's gotta be the french film "High Tension" had a pretty bad ending.
we find out the is the murderer, and that she's actually just crazy

Seriously, what the hell?

Books? I hear twilight isn't any better in novel form

Games? Modern warfare 2.
Oh look at that, the guy we've been hunting the entire game got away, but our ally who betrayed us because he wants to be known as the guy who took down the bad guy by himself. Oh, and so, even though he murdered special operation allied forces, and spent million on a PMC to kill them, is somehow still honored as a war hero. Just another reason call of duty is utter shit; in my opinion.

Did anyone say Final Fantasy VII, yet? Cause if not, you've got to be joking as it's arguably even worse than the depressingly unsatisfying ending of Final Fantasy X because it -

doesn't even HAVE a fucking ending. "Oh no, here comes Meteor, will Holy save us? Oh no, Holy is attacking Humanity, what will happen? *400 Years Later* Hey look, Nanaki/Red XIII is running along with his kids, awww... wait what? WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS SHIT?!"
the ending is subject to interpretation. Like all endings.

Holy didn't attack humanity, Holy simply let Meteor destroy Midgar. Why? Because the planet judged that not all of humanity was worth saving. After the decay of the planet thus far, if some damage wasn't done it would've resulted in the destruction of the Earth by mankind's own hand. Thus, Holy allowed Midgar to be destroyed.

Skip ahead 400 years:

The planet survives and it's assumed mankind does as well, only mankind learned the hard way to "Go Green" a la big fucking rock hitting your city.

That's what made the ending unique. It was a sort of bittersweet ending, rather than just Sunshines and Rainbows. If nothing else, I can respect it for that.

I could easily find something to knit pick about 6's ending, but I'd rather not.

Fucking Fallout 3. A shit-smeared "Go find your daddy" storyline, an absolutely worthless moral choice at the end that the game literally berates you for making one way, and the most absurd and fucking retarded line of dialog EVER from the super mutant; and that fucking Ghoul REGENERATES under radiation. But we wrote a shitty ending and you're damn well going to have to play it no matter how many logical inconsistence there are. Oh, and if you want a better ending, you're going to have to BUY IT.

One of many reasons Fallout 3 sucked balls next to New Vegas. Fuck Bethesda.

Also Liberty Prime; funny lines, but yay, a big overpowered robot to do all my work. This is what I like. /sarcasm
I have to agree. After pretty much raping Oblivion nightly, I was excited by a new locale, weapons, and entirely different world. I enjoyed about 25 hours of gameplay (by procrastinating the main storyline), then I was less than amused. I didn't even have Fawkes or Charon with me (I had Jericho but that's besides the point) to try to con my way into extra gameplay.

I still loved the rest of the game, so I bought the DLC because I have money for that shit and I'm not stubborn enough to try and believe I can avoid getting fucked by a corporation. Anyone who thinks they "win" by not buying DLC is fucking delusional and bitter.

Highschool of the dead and Mahou sensei negima are decent competitors for the prize.

As for games and movies...
Eh, I can't think of anything.
High School of the Dead is still going on. The Anime might not be renewed for a second season however. And Mahou Sensei Negima the manga JUST ended but yeah I have to say that the ending for it pretty much sucks.

Twin Peaks.
There was this awesome several minutes of complete "What the hell did I just take?", and then...
Cooper ends up possessed by Bob
It just kinda ruined the series for me. It was just sorta "Yeah, we have to wrap up the show... Let's just have this happen."
To be fair to Twin Peaks and David lynch he never wanted to reveal Laura's killer but the TV executives made him, everything after that was weaker for it.

For me it was the ending of Life. Granted it was rushed and tied up hurriedly, and it did have it moments, such as Crews showing that Zen Philosophy wasn't what got him through prison, but there were so many gaping plot holes and an out of character romance shoe-horned in, it was a terrible let down to a fantastic series.

Game: Final Fantasy X
Are you kidding me? That was the best ending ever:

THAT FUCKTARD TIDUS FINALLY SHUT UP FOR GOOD AND I'D NEVER HAVE HAD TO SEE HIS UGLY MUG AGAIN!...Shame x-2 ruined THAT little bit though...

OT: I'd have to say...the ending to the last Wayfarers redemption book, Crusader.

After defeating the big bad, the main protagonist decides that seeing as that bad stuff happened:

Main Character: "Yeah, to make sure nothing like that happens again...I'M GONNA HAVE EVERYONE KILLED AND SENT TO HEAVEN! Bye!"

Everybody in the world: "Wait Wha-" *everyone dies*

Literally..that's the end, everyone dies for a really really REALLY stupid reason. Plus it pretty much turned into full blown "CHRISTIANITY SOLVES EVERYTHING!" by the end of it.

Honestly, if you DO have to read the Wayfarer books, just read the first three. It'll save you ALOT of pain later on..and to be honest the first three books are pretty neat (if containing a fair amount of squick and being slightly cliche at times).

If you liked the book its legitimate to dislike the Lord of the rings movie ending i mean specifically how the ring was destroyed. I fully understand why they changed it and agree the modern audience just wouldn't of accepted the book ending but it does leave a very sour taste as it is sort of diametrically opposed to the moral in the book .
I really don't get what you mean by that. In the book, Gollum fell into the Crack of Doom purely by chance. In the movie, the greed that the ring bestoys upon its weilder drives Frodo and Gollum to fight over its possession. Frodo wasn't trying to stop Gollum from messing up the mission. He wanted his ring back. The ring, by its own nature, brings about its destruction.

Although I can see what you mean, any changes from such an old and great work will always taste bitter in the mouths of those who love it. I feel like you should be more gentle with your dispair in this case. HOenstly, I'd be more pissed over the fact that the final charge of the Army led by Aragorn was originally about faith in the book, since they (and the reader) had no idea if Frodo was alive still, but in the movie the editing ruins that.

OT: Mafia (the first one) had a crappy ending in my mind. Yeah, yeah, crime, pay, doesn't etc. I get that. But it just felt lousy.

Yeah, I second this. What the hell were we trying to find? A weird-ass tentacle monster and NOTHING else? I guess it's the journey, not the destination.

OT: Star Wars: Episode One. Jar Jar Binks wasn't slaughtered...

the creator of the universe wants to destroy the milky way. the heros think that sucks and try to stop him. not only do they fail to stop him, but only serve to piss him off enough so that he ends up destroying the entire universe instead. the heros lose. if it stopped there, that would be fine, but... immedately after this, they end it with everything being fine. the universe is destroyed, then they wake up and everything is fine. and noone knows how it happened. the end.

one of my favorite games. complete bullshit ending.
