Most people base their perceptions of the US Southern accents on TV stereotypes where the actors have never heard a Southern accent and go off what their uncle told them they talk like. For instance, a Louisiana Bayou accent has almost nothing in common with a Texan accent, and probably even less with a New Orleans accent. Virginia is easily distinguishable from Georgia, but you never hear that because according to TV, there's one Southern accent. I say "sound", because I know some professors at my university have those accents. Just depends what they're saying with that accent. Either way it hurts my ears
