Worst Experience With a Gaming Community

DotA: I played 2 games and I died 1 time in the first game, and got flamed by BOTH teams for the remainder of the match. Second game I didn't die until about 10 minutes in, but than made one stupid mistake. And my whole team rage-quit after flaming me.

Never played it again, and was weary about playing LoL, but I started playing with friends and I did enjoy it. Still waiting for my DotA II invite.

LoL isn't as bad as people make it out to be. If someone get's on your nerves, you can just ignore them. And some people are just plain hilarious.

DayZ forums. It was pretty bad.

The second worst was probably the Ultima Online community, right when they were getting ready to split the game up into pvp and non-pvp; probably around 99-2000. This is the first time I'd ever heard anyone throw the term carebear around. The flaming was pretty heated back then. Moderation used to be a lot looser on the web in general.

for me its CoD whenever there's a hacker, obouisly the hacker himself is bad but the response from the other players imo is even worse. the vile that spews from their mouth is terrible. every time i hear it it just makes me question why im playing with these people.

its ridiculous how anyone can project so much hate into another person they havent ever met, just because they arent up to their standards (which in most cases are shit and never reflects the real character)

Probably the most fanatical gaming community I've encountered was the first month or two around GW2's release. You could look up a video or article talking about any other MMO and almost guaranteed you would see at least one person yelling, with no elaboration or explanation, "GUILD WARS 2!". And that's not mentioning the tiresome berks on official MMO forums trotting out with the usual, "This game will die once GW2 comes out. Its days are numbered." I've rarely wanted to virtuaslap people as much as I did then.

The most anti-social was Runescape in my experience. Easy answer, yeah. But even so it was really bad. Pretty much the only chat going on was arguing, bickering and petty insults.

Well, those and gold-sellers.

On a personal scale I'd say during RP in online games when dealing with people who seem to want nothing more than to insult people for doing what they enjoy (I.E "You like RP? THAT MEAN YOU STUPID AND RETARDED" I'm not even kidding that pretty much how it does) or cases were you have the people who do RP that act as if their characters are better than everyone else and you MUST do what they want.

As for a point which made me go "I don't any part of this community anymore, well I'd say the whole Mass Effect 3 Facebook rage on a picture of a Pinkie Pie in N7 Armor...I mean really? Who get angry about something that trivial?

When I played Halo Wars multiplayer, I decided to chance that in a 3 v 3 match, at least one of the opponents were going to warthog rush, so I build hunters, other teamate built jackles, the third built vampires, we pretty much destroyed them, the guy who warthog rushed MY base, decided to send me a long rant of how I don't know how to play. I found it funny.

First and only 1v1 match, both covenant, he decides to rush me with suicide grunts, I have 20 jackles, he tries 4 times and rage quits, telling me to learn some new tactics.

Off topic but a good tactic was to use captain cutter, build an elephant, park it close to a base and spam out marines(at the very begining of the match) good times.

In the years I played Reach, I had one team mate once who was yelling at us to do better or else, so I started suiciding, giving enemy team free kills, we lost because of that, I was proud of myself.

Team Fortress 2 easily.

I didn't want to buy TF2 because, at the time, my computer awful. When it went free to play however I jumped on the opportunity to get it. The amount of hate spewing from the incessant nerds was physically painful to the degree that all the hate towards free-2-players died down.

Believe it or not.. Minecraft.

It's not that the people playing online are shouting obscenities in general chat or whatnot, they are just always... there. No matter what I'm doing, where I am with the exception of the middle of nowhere or who I'm with there is some random person right there looking over my shoulder the entire time. They don't say ANYTHING and whenever possible open every container to see what is inside.

Insults and bad behaviour I can deal with but this.. It's just bloody annoying!

I was at some sort of videogame day event, and happened to find several computers with Left 4 Dead 2 multiplayer set up. Sweet! So, I started playing a Co-op round with a few people, pretty much playing the original game within its sequel. I noticed one of the players was called "Rainbow Crash". Finding it pretty cool how someone was being open as a brony with their username, I said in encouragement "Rainbow Crash? Aww, yeah!"

Next thing I know, they all voted me out of the game. For being nice? For giving a compliment? I have no idea what was going through their heads! Not sweet.

Oh my god, EA stuck a CD Key onto a console game. What a crime, they're the next Charles Manson. Oh dear, Day 1 DLC. That's clearly such a deplorable action from this makeshift cartel. Oh no, they're tying games to Origin! That's such a violation of consumer rights! Dear lord, they're selling new games for $60, how dare they set a legal price for a luxury item! They bought a company and killed it when it started losing them money! Those child-killing bastards!

I think much of gamer culture needs to brush up on the basics of business, what their consumer rights actually are, and the big book of "Steam does all this shit too, you idiot!"

I've never played League of Legends, but this was my feeling when I played DOTA for a while in my Warcraft 3 days. In fact, it's pretty much why I don't play LOL.

While I'm not a mega-hater of EA either (although I am annoyed by the serial studio-killing), I challenge you to give me examples of CD Keys, Day 1 DLC, maximum pricing, or studio killing from Valve. You have to remember, after all, that Valve is the game company, and Steam is a program hosted by Valve, so selecting non-Valve games hosted on Steam is incorrect.

I think DotA and LoL for sure. Angry players left and right. I've seen everything from minor flaming to leaving games just because someone died. That doesn't bother me though, what does bother me is the fact that their own toxic behavior in reaction to other's mistakes is what loses games.

The FGC.

When I was younger, I went to a small arcade in PA. Dad gave me some quarters to go play a few games. I saw a MvC machine and decided to try it out cause I saw Megaman on it. After a match against the CPU(which I lost, first time playing the game) this big guy comes up to me and says I have to play him to continue playing there. I lost. Horribly. Then I was told to leave and don't come back, him and his friends kept making sure I couldn't reenter. I told my dad about it and we just left. Then years later I found out that was common in arcades cause of that arcade mentality or whatever.

Then years later I decided to rent SF4. I played it for awhile then tried it online. Lost again and got a message from my opponent saying I should have my hands broken for losing. Returned the game and never really played another one of those things again.

That's really unfortunate, I'm sorry you had those experiences with the FGC. The arcade days were pretty rough and you could easily get into a fight at an arcade. But today's FGC (and not the online community, the online community for the most part is really tame) is decent. Not good, but not bad. You still get made fun of if you started playing FG's during 2009 or sooner (because of Street Fighter 4). It's definitely a more social community, and there are some really nice people at your local scene, most likely.

I still see that attitude when I go on SRK or DL. Truthfully, I wish it'd die off alltogether. It has no right existing.

In terms of multiplayer communities, well...

The first time I ever played a Halo game, Halo 3, the very first match. The winner, the WINNER of the match with the highest score sent a message to everyone else in that game telling them that they were trash. Talk about a sore winner.
