Just started playing Condemned: Criminal Origins. It's weird to think that THAT is what graphics were like, even on X-Box 360, only 7 years ago. It's crazy how far things have come even on the same system.
Too true. Amazing the envelopes they can push, even just using the same hardware. Happens every gen: they really get used to a new hardware. Jeff Gershem (spelling?), then of Gamespot, arguably fired for giving a bad review to a game, asked aloud, after Ninja Gaiden on the original Xbox, could graphics ever get any better? The answer came on the 360. At the time, Condemned made me sick to my stomach I thought the graphics and hitting hobos with melee weapons so realistic. Now, things like "Prey" look stone age next to "Black Ops". Sadly, every time they get good at pushing the envelope, they start new consoles! This time, we should have cutting edge for a good 2 years before that happens.

Well, I'll admit to being the rarity on the escapist who does care a lot about graphics. Old games become nearly unplayable for me, particularly if I've played sequels to the game with better graphics.
A specific example would be Morrowind though. I love the game, but I have a whole bunch of mods on my pc version to make it higher definition and fix some of the animations. I played a vanilla version on an xbox recently and oh god... I forgot how bad it was before I fixed it up... (and yes, I do remember that Arena and Dagerfall were worse, but I didn't play those nearly as much, nor did I mod them as much).
I didn't know Morrowind got that good. I tried Oblivion on PC recently and thought it broken. Nope. Just old by today's standards. That it came out on the same hardware as Skyrim is amazing.
It is odd so many escapists don't care about graphics. I have so many friends that can never go back, even a little. Got a buddy that would not play Star Wars 2, the one that ends with your guy vs a Lizard Syth, pretty for the time, but could not go back to it after seeing the graphics of half life 2!
