Shion Uzuki from Xenosaga. I never missed a chance to kick her to the bench and use characters I didn't actively hate.
Shion Uzuki from Xenosaga Episode 1 had great characterization, even if she fit a lot of tropes in just that one game. In Episode 2, she ditched her Vector uniform in favor of more casual wear, here we see her evolve into.....

..... A total ***** (she lashes out at pretty much everyone) in Episode 3 (Don't worry, she gets better when she finally confronts her demons).

I hated the main guy from Painkiller. His face freaked me out. And I also didn't like that Hawaiian shirt-wearing guy from Far Cry. What was his name? Carver? Jack Carver? Real original, Crytek.

Gordon Freeman. Yes I said it. Now quote me and tell me how wrong I am.
Yeah, he is a bad main character. Not that anyone cares, because the Halflife series is fucking schweet.

This, one thousand times this.

Virgil said it best: "Hypocrite, that word doesn't even BEGIN to describe you."

A shame that takes until seconds before the final fight in the game.

Hey, if you were
Mind fucked by the guy you supposedly "loved" that you watched get killed by the ultimate sentient weapon you two were developing from beyond the grave,
let's just say I'm quite amazed that she was able to retain her position in Vector AND continue the KOS-MOS Project. AND function in normal society. Granted, the
Mind Screw by the guy you supposedly "loved" that you watched get killed by the ultimate sentient weapon you two were developing from beyond the grave
only became apparent in Episode 3.

That guy from Assassin's Creed (Altair?). A great game that I almost switched off because I couldn't stand him. I stuck with it and in the end enjoyed the game very much. I still can't stand anything about him though.

I have to say Gordon Freeman too (mainly for his goatee). Half-Life: Episode 2 is still one of my favourite games though.

And Marcus from Gears of War. Played through the first one, could not stand him or any of the other soldiers.

Gorden Freeman, the worst main character in a video game I have played.
Gorden Freeman is not payed enough to speak. he is definitely not mute (he got a masters from MIT with what? a 4.0 GPA?)

Nintendo is too lazy to give any of the 7000 some links a voice, even though it woulds make sence, seeing as he has to somehow be able to woo all the chicks he has as girlfriends.

Samus is emotionally scarred, so she never talks except to swear endlessly in 12 billion languages at riddly (spellcheck) (the dragon thing killed her mom when she was 5 while she was watching)

Mario does speak, but any intelligent conversation is unknown to come from him

I have to admit, I don't really see the point in most silent protagonists. How can you project yourself onto a character who's face, name and role in life has already been decided? I personally find it more of a barrier to my empathy for the character, since I have no real idea why the character is saving the world, except that he must be a mindless drone who does whatever he is told to do. So I don't get why people would empathise with the mute Freeman, yet scorn the faceless Master Chief, when the latter demonstrates a dry humour and a sense of purpose.

The whole cast of FF XII. They could all have died and I wouldn't have felt a thing. Except maybe a bit of schadenfreude.
This, apart from Ashe and Balthier. I liked that she was a widow. Take THAT generic princess love story!
I liked Ashe at the beginning, too, because of the widow thing. But there just wasn't any development beyond that, imo. And Balthier was only cool until they played the MY FATHER IS EVIL AND I LEFT MY PAST BEHIND BECAUSE OF THAT BUHU card.

I think Baltheir is the only character in that entire game that I liked. Vann wins the unlikable main character award. Coming in close second is the MGS2 version of Raiden.
I liked Balthier until the daddy issues started. Surprisingly, Vaan gets redeemed in Final Fantasy Revenant Wings (which nobody played wich is sad).

I didn't have a DS around the time Revenant Wings came out and now that I do it is impossible to freaking find! It angers me so. I still liked Balthier during his daddy issues, mainly because he was still a badass who operated the ship and had fomalhaut(I know other characters could have it, he just looked the coolest when he did).

Niko Bellic, I could never identify with him and for gameplay purposes he could have been a soulless robot.
Apparently the reason no one could relate to him was because no one really knows the struggles of an immigrant. I heard that from somewhere but I may very well be wrong.
My point was that sandbox mayhem and overwrought drama don't mix.

50 Cent, cuz he is rapper who raps for money, and sucks.
Maybe his son 25 Cent (Nickle ?) loves that game.

Maybe it's still somewhere on amazon, it's deiniftely worth it! I enjoyed it a lot more than the original, because the characters actually develop and react to each other. The fighting system is pretty fun, too.

I think when Batlhier's backstory started I had already given up on the game, heh.

Yeah, a mystery of this gaming generation. I have no idea what Mr. Freeman's appeal is either, at least Masterchief as you said has a dry sense of humour and at least an understanding of his role in the story. That I feel is a 'proper' game character. Because at least with him I know what his goals are, what he does and how other people respond to him. Gordon Freeman might as well be a floating pair of eyes with a hand attached holding a crowbar because that's about as much about him as you ever get to know.
I agree with you. People praising Gordon I just don't get.

If this game could make Vaan at all likable then I will buy it just so I can watch it warp reality.

Infamous, that guy is a static shock/ black lightning rip off. He looks like the Apprentice or a fusion of Justin Timberlake and T.I. I swear down I have hated almost all Next Gen main characters, they have absolutely no variety or flavour. Just a bunch of generic scrub, grizzly acting, short brown-haired white guys with some sort of action man clothing.

However this guy, takes the cake. He literally has his own storage space in the vault of stereotypes.
