Shion Uzuki from Xenosaga. I never missed a chance to kick her to the bench and use characters I didn't actively hate.
Shion Uzuki from Xenosaga Episode 1 had great characterization, even if she fit a lot of tropes in just that one game. In Episode 2, she ditched her Vector uniform in favor of more casual wear, here we see her evolve into.....

..... A total ***** (she lashes out at pretty much everyone) in Episode 3 (Don't worry, she gets better when she finally confronts her demons).
Ahh, so a character who has one of the most miserable lives ever and quite literally has god like people out to make sure she is miserable should stay nice and well balanced throughout the entire story? I'm pretty sure 99% of the people in existence would have gone postal at some point in her life so I have a hard time hating her for not being Mary Poppins. Besides, most of the people she lashed out at deserved it anyway.
No, most of them didn't. Furthermore, about half of the other party members had lives that were similar plot-mandated tragedies, if not worse ones. The difference being that none of them were as absurdly disagreeable as our woobie protagonist. Not even the Scrappy Doo-ish twit Jr. was that obnoxious.

By the way, if your wondering about my use of the word "woobie", here's the site that explains that bit of vernacular.

I'd like to say Squall because he irritated me to no end. But Tidus takes the cake.
Nah, Squall was worse. Although I suppose it depends what annoys you more, being frighteningly androgynous or being a thoroughly unlikeable emo.

Gunblades still piss me off to no end. Do you have to reload it? Do you have to pull the trigger to make it stab someone? If you put bullets in it, does it hurt more?

Come to think of it, I hated everything in Final Fantasy VIII.

Initially I thought The Nameless One was a horrible protagonist in Torment but he grew on me
Initially I was going to rip off your gibblets for the first half of that sentence and then you grew on me.

Anyway, I always thought that Shepard from Mass Effect sucked. He was far to empty and uninteresting, it was like he was meant to be a blank slate so you could make yoour own character like in other RPG's but the game didn't ship with the ability to do so.

TAKE THAT BACK!

Anyway, I'm suprised no one mentioned old Ethan Waber from Phantasy Star Universe, true, the story is still unfolding, and we'll learn more about him and his "tragic" background, but he just isn't likeable.

That, and the PSU series mollycoddles the player, pairing an AI partner with them throughout story mode, while back in old PSO, all they gave the damn Hunters were stock equipment and booted them out the door, while the Guardians are like helicopter parents, never leaving their side lest they fall into a puddle and DROWN.

Ayumi from X-Blades isn't that bad. As someone who's actually played the fucking game, I can say the she is nothing special, but she's not that annoying later on.

As for the worst main character? I'm going to choose...You know what? I got nothing. There are a ton of terrible characters, too many to choose.

EDIT: After seeing the above post, I must vote for Ethan Weber. Such a fucking dumbass.

I hated the X-Blades chick before I saw her.
"X-Blades? Why is there an X? I hate this game. I bet the main character is a half nak...there we go."
Didn't really love Master Chief, but he could be worse.

ug a lot of female game characters suck. i need to think hard to think of a female character that wasn't either stupid, lame, or mostly naked.

Preston Marlow in BF: Bad Company. He's just not doing it for me. I love that game. Shoot the name better then a few I've heard. But I just don't feel like a charasmatic person I could look to as inspiration. He's greedy, and not much a part of the plot. Sure he saves the squad, but at what cost?

Or the robot in Chibi-robo.

Tingle, anyone?
God, I absolutely hate him! I saw that Rupee Quest thing game whatever the fuck it was in Gamestation once, on the DS stand, and I hated him straight away. Basically, he's a gay crazy midget with a penchant for working for (cough*stealing*cough) peoples money, then using it to get to some drug induced 'Happy Land'... How messed up were the developers of that?

Otherwise, I can't say I've seen any game where I've actually hated the main character. Although what someone said about X-Blades is pretty true, I didn't like that character much after seeing Unskippable. For some reason the voice actress just appeared really lazy too.

most of my generals in any total war game they all end up being baby eating evil and most inportantly corrupt motherfuckers
Hey, in Rome that's a good thing because the unhinged loons give the best speeches before battle...although I agree that (until Empire) the Creative Assembly went overboard with the negative-trait triggers. They appear to have fixed that with Empire, though (although Medieval 1 also had some very fair triggers which could lead to brilliant generals you could leave in a province to act as governors.) Now if only they'd get on finishing the rest of the game (to be fair, they've got big patches planned that Bethesda probably would've sold as DLC.)

To answer the original question, Squall from FF8. It's not good game design to make a character so irritating and bothersome and impossible to root for that all interest is sucked out of the story by the end of disc one (if not by the end of Squall's final exam at Garden.) JRPGs in general seem to be trending toward brooding antiheroes (which is one reason I hate the genre so damn much.)

While I can't say they're wrong in their own opinions I can't help but wonder if people who say Squall (especially over people like Cloud or Tidus) actually played Final Fantasy VIII to the end of the game and/or paid attention to what happens to his character.

Anyways, I really hate Tidus from Final Fantasy X (though not as much as some people I think) but I think the video game character who really really angers me is Grom Hellscream (honorable mentions to his son Garrosh for being almost as insufferable and douchebaggish as his father).

Even though one of my favorite games is Assassins Creed I would have to go with Altair. He is just soooooo thick!!!! He is a total badass and everything but for the love of cake, he didn't see what he got coming?
