I ask because there is nothing that will get me lobbing f-bombs at the screen faster than a frustrating vehicle section. A good vehicle section will have me replaying that level just for the fun of it, but a shitty car, boat, of flying what-have-you puts me about as close to controller throwing as I ever get. To preserve the delicate ears of my profanity-averse housemates, and to prevent any controller-flinging rotator cuff injuries on my part, what games should I avoid?

possibly quake 4, followed by the HL-2 boat section (for the see-saws i'm afraid). it was ok once you got the better weapon.

Your mom.

Seriously, she was shite. Worst ride ever.

I'm personally not a fan of the vehicles in CryTek's games.

Driving almost anywhere in Crackdown. Levelling up on driving skills in that game in order to make the vehicle more controllable was more trouble than it was worth; after levelling up on Agility enough that I could run to objectives faster than I could drive through traffic, I almost never drove. I never did really learn how to control those "cows on stuck-wheel grocery carts" cars well.

HL2's airboat was slightly less agonising, but alas was without the option to bypass it.

The driving section in Gears of War sucked pretty bad, but I'm sure it's not the worst ever.

I am not sure why so many people are busting on the boat section in Half Life 2. It was one of the better vehicle sections I have seen. Not perfect, but better than most. The worst section I have played is either the VTOL section in Crysis or the motorcycle section in Tomb Raider Legend. Luckily both games were still good, especially Crysis, despite these failings.

the only one i didnt hate was halo 3's ending one for the simple curiosity why the car didnt break or at least get a flat tire from going off a jump then droping 45 stories down , also for the fact that the explosions didnt even set me off course,

For me it has to be Halo 3. Only for the fact that the Friendly CPU's are Mentaly and Physicly Retarted! Only the last driving level was fun. (Please excuse my bad spelling)

Khell_Sennet, I have to disagree with you on the tank section in Crysis. This section was by far, and I mean by far, the best vehicle section in any game I have played, period. It felt like a tank, it handled (mostly) like a tank and seriously, the section just kicked butt. The feel was highly realistic from the limitations of the vehicle to acceleration, turning and even to ammunition capacity was pretty good. I am not sure what people expect out of a tank section but this was easily the best I have seen.

I thought that the Mako from Mass Effect was god-awful in some segments. It was fine when you were driving it over landscapes, but when you had to actually drive it with some finesse? Awful.

The tank and jumpjet segments of Crysis drove me insane. The 2-man jeep part of FarCry wasn't much better on my sanity. The worst though, the lava surfboarding in Conker's Bad Fur Day.
That bloody hoverboard race. That took me a week to finish. Also, the one in Gears of War.

The MAKO sections from Mass Effect were not really fun, except for the final one

The Jet-Ski from Uncharted was annoying

Both Vehicle Sections in HL2 were terrible

The Vehicle Section from Gears of War on Single Player

HL2's Dune Buggy would be my choice. It was bizarrely both twitchy and sluggish. It was too unresponsive to control at high speed and the slightest bump would send you spinning into a wall (or off a cliff, or into an explosive barrel, or into the leech infested waters of doom). That, and they stuck you with it for about two hours. Honestly, highway 17 was the worst level in the game.

I thought the swamp boat was much more fun but unfortunately it outstayed its welcome by about thirty minutes.

*EDIT*
I thought of something else. The air units in BF2142 were godawful. I understand that they were trying to make them flyable with a mouse but they ended up brain-dead simple and boring as a consequence. The helicopters in BF2 were much more fun.

My problem with the tank section was twofold...
1. I buy FPS games to play infantry, not vehicles. I often dislike when FPS games include such segments, notable exception for Shadow Warrior and Prey, the tank in Shadow Warrior being the most bitchin thing done up to that point in time (even if it was three cardboard boxes with a barrel), and Prey's exosuit meshed so well with the game you can't imagine playing any other way.

2. Crysis had me go up against what, 2 dozen tanks and equal numbers of rocket-equipped infantry, with me in my one tank (the others on my side being as useful as a used condom). Halfway through you can replace your much-abused Abrams for a Korean tank, but thats the extent of repairs or reloads. Not much of a fair fight.
indeed; it does seem that developers are putting vehicle sections in for necessity rather than moulding it into the game like PREY etc

Firstly, I have to agree with those who hated the vehicle sections in Crysis, they really sucked, and no bullets do not automatically bake things blow up! They are made of lead or maybe steel, not C4.

Secondly, what was wrong with the airboat section in hl2? that was probably the most realistic vehicle section in any game I've ever played, with the notable exception that your engine and hulls are made of bullet-and-everything-else-proof.... something.
