I have a bit of a loophole here. I'm going to go with Time Hollow, an adventure game for the DS. I had to look this up on Wikipedia to make sure I had accurate info. Apparently there is an alternate ending to the game if you follow the cat (Sox?) instead of going to dinner. This is the first decision that you make in the game, and being an overly curious gamer, I chose to follow Sox (who wouldn't?). After a few good guesses on the next questions, I was presented with the alternate ending. UPCOMING SPOILERS (albeit, very vague ones).

You yell at a random dude, come back inside, and throw an unconscious girl through a time loopy-thing that's 10,000 ft. in the air. Then the main character says something about never being able to meet someone, and CREDITS! Game time: 10 minutes.

I still have no idea what's going on in the game, but now I don't really care. It was like reading a book that accidentally printed the epilogue where the prologue should have been.
That's an alternate ending that only unlocks if you've already beaten the game. Kinda like an Easter egg.

It makes sense if you've played through the game already. Because it focuses on time paradoxes, if you play it again, you, i.e. the player, know what happens, and how the story plays out and how to fix things from the start. Even if it's the first time from the character's perspective.

I thought Time Hollow ends quite well. It's always difficult to wrap up a story about time travel without leaving massive plot holes but it does a decent job.

I actually rented the game through Gamefly, so even though I didn't beat the game, someone else did on the game card, hence the easter egg. This makes SO much more sense. Since the availability of the easter egg isn't until someone beats the game, I'll take back my comment about the game structure involving the ending being awful. With that said, it was still a tragic experience for me (since I thought it looked rather good), and probably still don't want to play through it (since I know how it ends...technically).

Ah right, that's a shame. I'd say it's still worth giving it a go, it's actually got a very good story. There's almost zero replay value though, because, like you say, you already know what's gonna happen.

I'm gonna have to agree with XIII's ending as well...

Also Psi-Ops: the mindgate conspiracy had the same crappy ending.

The first Baten Kaitos.

Turns out, you had amnesia the whole time, and the main character? He was the real bad guy the entire time!

Also, all that time you spent making him the best character, ignoring everyone else? Yeah. He's also the last boss battle. With the best of everything. and his health is at LEAST 5 times as much as it was before alll that was revealed.

I fucking hate you, Kalas!

Final Fantasy 8.

The ending was overly happy, soppy, and full of Hollywood bull.

I've never been a fan of the original Fallout's ending. You defeat The Master and his mutant army and more or less save the world, you return to your vault victorius and the Overseer tells you that you aren't allowed back in because you've been on the outside for too long. There is a way to kill him, but either way the last shot is of you walking with your head down through the wasteland.

Also Final Fantasy II (the real one) it doesn't really have a bad ending so much as a werid one. Everything is taken care of but there's a small implication that there is going to be a sequel or something else that will completely conclude the story, but they never do. Like I said, it's not bad it's just weird.

Fallout 3 is a pretty good candidate here, as well. Before they "fixed" it, I mean. (I forget the ending after that, so who knows if it was good.) I could get the concept, but there was one part that really bugged me in the base game. (Spoiler tags for...Spoilers, oddly enough.)

Okay, so, you know how you end up dying from radiation because you have to go in and stop the reactor and such? (Or have your friend die if you're just that low, but I went with the former.) Well, if you /think/ for a moment, a couple companions of yours could theoretically go in there and turn it off with no physical threat whatsoever. Fawkes was with me at the time, so he came to mind, since super-mutants are immune to radiation. I talk to him, get an option to ask him to do it, and (unless you have the expansion) he gives me this statement about how it's my destiny to do this and he can't take that away from me.

What. The heck. That's so incredibly unrealistic it's not even funny. Just meant to keep you from doing that, for dramatic purposes. Sorry, but that could have been done better.

They get points for fixing it later, though. Actually can send him in if you have the expansion. But until the expansion came along, that's how they intended to end the game. Great.

holy F#"$ second that i was so pissed off I just walked away better to leave her dead and save the world rather than destroying what i spent (about) 5 hours doing. I didn't really like her that much anyways (shame the game didn't give me a choice on wheter she lives or not

This! It's one of my favourite games but the ending of KotoR II is so bad, I remember playing it for the first time (on the xbox) I had a female jedi, had trained Atton as a jedi and knew that the pair of them dug each other, get to the end beat the boss and bang, I don't get a cut scene I get old woman telling me shit!

(Thank God I've now got the mod for it!)

Yeah, the cut content mod adds a Atton vs. Darth Scion battle, and a cutscene right after the end that helps tie up his story.

Too bad if you hadn't trained him as a Jedi (I didn't) you have hardly any chance of winning and

He actually dies at the end

I really did NOT see that one coming halfway through the game.
The real problem with that game is not enough savespots. Oh and Melodia best villain ever(i would replay the game just for her).

Fable 2 from what i heard of others

Fable 2. After the epic boss fights of Fable, wtf was it thinking? You don't even have to do anything, Stephen Fry will do it for you! Gah! At least in 3 the one thing they did right was bring back the good old boss fight. And the sanctuary. But mostly the boss fights.

QFMFT.

I can't think of any other game I've played that ended with such a kick in the balls.

I just spent 10-12ish hours running around stopping this guy. Time to let him right back out again!
