Counter Strike Source has got to be the most unforgiving, unintuitive, unfriendly game ever made.

Worst ways?

Super Meat Boy (AAAAARGH, WHY IS EVERYTHING KILLING ME!?)
Planescape: Torment (AAARRGH, WHY IS EVERYONE KILLING ME WITH TEXT!?)
HoN/LoL (AAAARRRGH, WHY DOES EVERYONE HATE ME!?)

There.

Toss in your favorite fighting game and beat 'em mercilessly at it until they give up. That is the worst way... or apply that theory to any genre where 1 on 1 competitive play is possible and a newbie has essentially no chance against a veteran player. Very, very cruel to do with an RTS.
Did this to a friend. He had never played a Total War game, and I made him get Shogun 2. We did a one on one match, and I have all units unlocked. He refused to get on that game again.

Pretty much avoid PC Gamers and FPS fans like the fucking plague. Because they will treat your friend as if they are carrying the fucking plague. SINGLE PLAYER OR COUCH CO-OP IS YOUR FRIEND.
Yes, go ahead. Kick us all down the same slimy pit because clearly, ALL pc-gamers are elitist assholes.

The irony in it is that he's so judgmental about PC gamers and calling them judgmental.

Worst introduction game. I Wanna Be The Guy and give them no hints on where they are going.

throw them into something extremely competitive like Starcraft or LoL where noobs get eaten for breakfast. They will get raged at so hard, and it will be so painful to watch, that they will be turned off gaming for life.

Invite them to start the original Operation Flashpoint from that mission where the Hind has killed all your squad, so you have to get through 2+ Km of Red Army infested countryside, alone and with no support and a very obviously American uniform.

Alternatively, if they're a pacifist, DEFCON - with the speakers turned up to max.
That rumbling? Oh, it's fine!
Sobbing? What sobbing? No-one could be unhappy under your benevolent leadership!

For this generation i'd say Portal and/or then Portal 2
Most of the game is tutorials, there's only a few controls, yet its still challenging enough to be interesting but easy enough that anyone with the ability to think logically can beat it.
Really?! I tried getting my dad to play Portal. He was interested in games, and Portal's a good, short game you can actually do at your own pace. It was awful. If you've played some games before then it's not too bad. It's a bad choice for a complete novice though. It requires precision and lateral thinking in a simulated 3d space. For someone with no experience in moving in a virtual 3d world trying to use a wormhole gun can break your brain.

I find Little Big Planet is good though. it's actually tricky in places, but 2d movement is easier to grasp.

if you are any sort of skilled in fighting games, playing against them and simply saying "get better" when they ask for tips...

me? I've never done this, I'm a teacher of sorts to my friends, but I first tried teaching with another friend, who didn't quite get it... good at blazblue, bad at teaching :\

A difficult, confusing and mostly bland RTS. Or a fast-paced game like DMC or Bayonetta or Ninja Gaiden, something difficult until you 'click' with the mechanics. Which newbies will never do.

Soften the newbie with Arma 2 and then for the finishing blow, let him/her play LoL.

Not only give them a hard game but make it a bad game, especially one that is hard to figure out how to play. Make sure the t.v. is really crappy, they are sitting in an uncomfortable half broken fold-up chair. Their controller has at least two broken buttons on it and the system they are playing on is prone to freezing. As they play, laugh and make fun of them for every mistake they make but don't offer any help as to how to get further. Leave a bunch of trash in the room that is starting to smell extremely bad. These seem like pretty good ideas to ruin gaming for someone.

If they get motion sickness give them an fps, a racing game, or something that has alot of movement and colors going on screen.
