It's worth it getting the games for the PC as opposed to the console IMO. Also, I highly recommend the Mass Effect series. And also, I recommend the KOTOR series if you haven't played that yet.

But if you want one game for a console and you have no interest in any other game for the console, it's not worth it. You're better off buying the games for the PC instead of buying a whole new console.

This is what's blowing my mind: I come in and read this and my own reaction mirrors the first half of this thread, "No, it isn't worth it unless you plan to buy more games and possibly already have a list if said games."

Then I start seeing what I can only assume to be fanboys (speculative) coming in saying: "Why yes, it is most certainly worth it as [system] is great and you'll no doubt find other great games such as [list of games]."

Now that's perfectly expected and doesn't surprise me. It's just... even if you're a FAN of a particular console, why tell someone who may not have that kind of money (some of us weren't born wealthy) that it is 100% definitely worth it to buy a current/next gen console that is hideously expensive when there is a good chance that they will not, in fact, care about any other game on the system?

My personal opinion is to not buy a console if I think there isn't going to be a cheat device on it. Having the option of being able to tweak games opens up access to games I'd never even consider touching even if they're interesting looking, or at least not keeping once I've actually tried it. But that's just me, and I don't play games online so it isn't an issue anyways.

As some others have already said, unless you can get the console for an unbelievably cheap price and/or plan to purchase other games, it more than likely is not going to be a good investment. I mean, I desperately wanted the GameCube and hadn't even thought of anything besides Sonic Adventure. What happened? I own a total of 4-5 games for it, 2 of which I've never finished, and the thing went belly up before I could get more games. It was over 300 dollars on that damn system and no matter how much I LIKED the console, it was a very bad investment.. especially when 2 of the games I own ended up on the GameCube several years later. Hell we didn't even get the friggin sequel to Jet Set Radio. :/

I love my 360 but I'm dying to play God Of War 3.

It's tempting and if I had more cash I would buy a PS3.

It isn't as unreasonable to buy a system for an entire series of games or a bundle of exclusives but, no, it is never worthwhile to buy a system for just one game...unless it combined everything good about every other videogame ever made.
Look at the game/genre mash-up threads to get an idea of what such a title would look/play like.

I have a pretty good laptop that can play most of the current generations games, however the ones i want the most are exclusive to consoles. Im considering whether or not its worth buying an Xbox 360 for Fable 2 and/or buying a ps3 for the God of war series.

I'd really only be buying for the exclusives as most other games are also offered for PC and I prefer it on my more portable laptop.

I have fable 1 for the PC and really enjoyed the Morality feature in the game. Ive been waiting for a Fable 2 PC port since the game was released, but now 2 years later theres still no word on a release. No spoilers please..but is the game as good as im expecting it to be? Is it worth buying the entire system for it?

Ive heard only good things about the God of war franchise and might go this route if I dont go for fable 2. Then again both consoles are fairly old at this point, and I read many games look better on the pc these days, so I'd only be doing it for the exclusives. Its worth pointing out that my game play in fable 1 lead me to realize the joys of an evil bad ass, and whos more evil and bad ass than the Kratos?

Lastly I might buy neither the xbox or the ps3 and just dig around for good pc games. Im looking for quality RPGs with morality systems. Doing research Ive stumbled upon Elder Scrolls Oblivion, Mass effect 1 and 2, fallout 3, bioshock 1 and 2 and dragons age origins.

I havent played any of these games, so maybe i should just save money and go though these first on my pc? If I go this route which ones should I play first?

What would you guys do?

If you prefer more Western style RPGs I'd say get the 360. Although Fable 2 is alright since I'll assume you will be getting it pre owned you will get it for a decent price so it is definitely good for a run through. Unless you're into Devil May Cry style games with puzzle thrown in I'd stay away from God of War but if you're into to it. Then they are brilliant games.

Obviously only do this if you are buying more games for the console as just for Fable or God of War it isn't worth it. I am assuming you do plan to buy more games for whichever system you choose if you do choose one however.

my rule is the console was only worth it if you had the same price value for how many software titles you bought in the long run. let me explain how that works:
Console Price is 5X
# of software titles you bought is 5 and each was X price so the console would only be worth it if you had 5 games on it at X price.

so if the console was $300 and you bought 5 games for it at $60 then it was worth it.

so to answer your question, as long as you make the console not the fable 2 machine or the god of war machine and not the 360 or ps3, then its ok.

People have done stranger things. You know how much a Pinball machine costs? I know a guy who has three of those.

Bottom line, if you have that kind of money, then I suppose it doesn't matter much. But if you are trying to figure out the most bang for your buck, you might want to stick to PC. All those games you mention wanting to play would likely be better on the PC, with the better graphics and the mods you can get for them.

If all you are looking at is Fable 2 and GOW to pick up a system for, and you don't have a lot of extra cash, I would wait. In another year both consoles will likely drop in price. And by then, Fable 3 will be out, and perhaps that will help you make up your mind.

I bought my N64 for Zelda and I bought my Playstation for Final Fantasy 8. Ended up with a good 50 games for the latter and 20 for the former. So I can't say it was a bad investment. Thing is, once you've got the console you'll probably find that there's plenty of other stuff worth doing with it.

Unless it's a Wii.

I bought my Ps2 just because KH was on it. When i bought my ps3 when it came out i had a library of 20 or so games.

Point is while you might pick the system out for that 'one' game you end up finding more and more games for it.

My ps3 i bought just because i knew KH3 was coming out for it. Currently i have about 16 or so games. Honestly it was the best choice for me. My GF owns the Wii (which is collecting dust) and i got a 360 and four games for 17 bucks in a deal at EB. I played each game a good three hours (L4D, Dead Rising, GoW, Crackdown) before letting it collect dust and then, inevitably returning it for in store credit (It bought me five games so i don't mind as much)

That's not to say The 360 sucks, or the Wii sucks. The exclusive titles for them just aren't my thing.

My point is though simply because of 'one' game I found the console that was right for me. Bear in mind though that when i first bought my ps2 i spent several months saving up paper route money so i had lots of time to debate whether or not it was worth it.

I bought a PS3 for the sole reason of playing MGS4 and it was worth every penny.

Now, PS3 is my favorite system.

I bought an Xbox 360 for Oblivion cause' it was cheaper than a new computer, and I was thoughtfully disappointed. I wish I had all the money.

I'd say this. Mostly because I bought a Wii for Smash Bros. I didn't regret it then, and still don't really, but now that my friends have all moved away, I never touch it anymore.

Also, 'the Kratos' made me chuckle.

If the only game that you wanted for the 360 was fable 2 then no, I would suggest you pick up a ps3 (mainly due to the built in blu ray player). Also from what I have played (4-5 hours) god of war 3 is a badass game.

The Witcher had a pretty cool morality system. I'd even go as far as saying there IS no black and white choices, only different shades of gray. Also the sequel has been announced so if you like it, you have a sequel to look forward to.
Dang it. Someone beat me to it. If anyone wants a morality system with a bit more depth to it than a choice between the extremes of "eat babies and kick puppies" and "rainbows and kittens and hugs for everyone!", The Witcher should be at the top of your list. You will make decisions that have consequences much later on that may not have occurred to you at the time but in retrospect will make you question yourself sometimes, and a lot of the time it's not choosing between things that are obviously good or bad, but instead which option might be "less bad", which can vary depending on your own feelings on things. It's like a BioWare game (pretty much all of which I also recommend) in style, only darker and more morally ambiguous.

1. Don't buy it for one game

2. DONT BUY A 360 FOR FABLE II, IT IS A DISAPPOINTING AND AWFUL GAME

PS3 has far more(and better) exclusives then 360, and many of the 360 exclusives also go to PC because it's microsoft also, if you can afford it, PS3/PC is the best combo.

I bought the Wii almost entirely for Muramasa: The Demon Blade...

Vanillaware is just that good...
