If you have a plan and a timeline to close that physical gap - for instance, a military assignment - yes.

If you are just gonna sort of play it by ear, then absolutely not.

I am in Finland for a few months to study while she is back home in Ireland studying as well.

It has been difficult but I'll get to see her for a month from the 17th of December. She visited me in October and I plan on visiting her in March. We'll be together again at the end of May but will we be the same? Only time will tell!

It depends. When I was about 13/14 I had a friend who was in a relationship with a girl in America. He had never met her, had no plans to and had only seen her on webcam. Those sort of relationships have no hope...
People who actually see each other at least couple of times a year can always work out. My boyfriend and I were in a long distance relationship, we lived in different counties (I'm in West Yorkshire and he was in East Yorkshire) we've been living together for about a year and half now. Hopefully getting our own place next month too~ Fingers crossed!
So yes, it CAN work out. You need to stick by it and be serious about it. You also need a lot of money to travel and more money to move in together...

It has worked for me in the past. But only just.

It was worth it, we had a blast while it lasted.

I'm living in Canada and my girlfriend is living in the US. We've been together for nearly two years. So yes, I have faith

It's fucking hard though...

The lovers live in different countries?
I'm in that exact relationship right now. She lives in Denmark, I live in the United States.

I have a great amount of faith in our relationship right now, considering that I'm going to see her for Christmas and I love her.

It's very hard, but it's completely worth it for me.

it depends on how serious they are about one another. and consistent communication and support is extremely important.

I tried a different country one after I emigrated to Canada, it failed, now I'm in a slightly less long-distance relationship with a girl in a city a few hours away, that one seems to be working.

So . . . yes, but that doesn't mean it'd work out anyway.

Long distance relationships are just like any other relationship. They only work if both parties are completely committed to each other. Sure, long distance can make it more stressful, but so can having low incomes, or having kids early, or being in college, and people have relationships that succeed in those situations all the time. It isn't the parameters of the relationship that decide whether it succeeds or fails, it's the people involved.
