I think it could, there could be the different races such as the Alliance, Turians, Salarians, Geth etc, with space combat and ground combat. Would be fun to customize ships and your own fleet, maybe a bit of base building. It would be PC only, so it isn't ruined by console limitations when it comes to RTS. What do you think?

Interesting, but no. It probably wouldn't work.
I mean, the races aren't seperated or at war w/ one another (at least right now).

Maybe have the campaign be the First Contact War

It would work if done right.
The question is whetehr or not it would end up being done right.

And aren't most of the major species peaceful or at least neutral with each-other? Doesn't sound like much of a game to me, unless you like "Space Politics - The game"

I would buy it if it was on the xbox and I couldimport my shepard as a comander of an army. It would be amazing if you could then control a soldier.

No. Trying to mix ground and 4x space combat into a seamless strategy game would not work. Every time you'd transfer from ground to space, you'd have to rely on a totally new control scheme to account for the three-dimensional combat of space.

Then trying to figure out a way to manage both battles on planets and in space simultaneously would suck.

Campaign management would be a pain in the ass too (not story campaign; warfare campaign, like Operation Barbarossa), especially when all the combating races have access to mass effect technology and can cut off lines of reinforcement, supply, and communication to any fleets you control at any time.

This would be a nightmare to develop; probably on par with Daikatana.

lol yeah I know, ignoring the obvious reasons I think the setting and unit possibilities would be cool. But I would rather have no mass effect rts then one with a story which ruins the series.

They could be separate I guess.

Its times like this that i wish i had the power to reach through my monitor & slap people who suggest turning great games into RTS's. Don't you people get it yet... RTS's are not good. I'm sorry if you really love RTS's you are probably somebody really boring though.
Yeah I wear a suit and tie and plan my strategies using paper from my briefcase. :p

It would work about as well as a Halo RTS.

Which is to say, not at all.

Halo Wars was terrible. It would be like a proper RTS.
Sure it would. Because Halo Wars was intended to be shit right from the beginning, that's why it didn't work, amirite?

Well when I played, it didn't feel like a RTS when compared to the others I had played, I'm sure they tried as best they could but it just felt like to me it didn't work within the confines of the Halo Universe. Same could go for my idea I guess. I dunno.

Yes it could work. Do I want one? No. Stick to RPGs imo.

It's not the fact that all RTS games suck (hint: just because you don't like them doesn't mean they all suck), it's that the format of the Mass Effect games doesn't lend itself to an RTS. Mass Effect is a shooter-RPG (for lack of a better term) that focuses on a small squad of highly skilled people. This could translate to a number of genres, but not to an RTS. Even if by some kind of miracle they managed to make a good game out of it, it wouldn't be a "Mass Effect RTS", it would be an "RTS that just happens to take place in the same universe as Mass Effect".

If you're willing to settle for that, power to you. But I'm not the least bit interested in that.
