Would naming my kid "Vault" be a detriment to him in life? Or a bonus giving him instant geek-cred?

Absolutely, Fallout will be just as relevant in 18 years. And there is nothing wrong with naming your child a geeky name so you can- sorry sorry I mean THEY can get geek cred.

Sorry about that, for a second I almost implied that you were doing this so you can get all attention and a 2 paragraph article on the escapist talking about how you are a hardcore gamer/fan etc.

As for insults based around the name Vault, I think the OP pretty much nailed it.

"your Daddy named you after a 10 year old videogame you loser!" pretty much all they need.

that's their problem not his. If anything, it'll be a good lesson for the kid.

Why should we ever have to feel pressured to name people the same fucking thing over and over, just because people will think they're different? Makes no sense.

Oh how convenient, yeah I'm sure it's only the cost that's holding you back. If you're going to ruin your kid with a crap name you should at least have the conviction to give yourself one too.

And then they grow up and realize kids are cruel no matter what.

OK, sound words of advice from someone whose mother used to work in payroll, and as such saw a lot of names.
DO NOT. Have fun with your child's name. Name them something slightly unusual, but never name them something that sounds silly, can be shortened to something silly, or could possibly bounce back.
Check initials, check accents, check misspellings. Do not let your child suffer the same as Ronald McDonald, Robert, Rachel, and Richard Sole, Nelly Smelly, William Shakespeare, and Ellie Fahnt
Indeed. Always good to go by the rule of what name wouldn't get your son beat up at school.

Tell you what, you Paypal me a grand, I'll mail you back a picture of my new radical ID, with my new radical name.

Also, my condolences for your originality. I'll imagine a wreath on it's grave for you.

I hope your wife beats this terrible idea out of your head OP. You don't name your children after objects, just as little as you give them Animal Names or completly idiotic stuff like Sunshine.

Vault does not sound like a name for a person and seriously, that you are asking this question and arguing that it sounds ''awesome'' makes me call into question if you should be a father at all...

Seriously, do not name your child Vault. Give your kid a normal freaking name, you don't make your kid stand out before it can even blabber, that just has douche all over it. And in my opinion, Vault sounds like a douche name too.
1. Ya really.

2. You seem like the kind of (in your parlance) "douche" that would make fun of someone simply because of their name.

3. Does anyone know how cowls are sized?

Geek cred?

So you're forcing him to be a nerd in order to be accepted for his name?

That is a MASSIVE dick move.

I would say that not only should you not name your kid that, you shouldn't have kids for a long time until you realise how bad that decision would be.

Tell you what why don't you just call yourself that anyway, email everyone you know telling them from now on you want to be called Batman. Look your parents in the eye and tell them that you, an adult male from now on seriously want to be called Batman. Everyone at work, extended family, everyone you know now has to call you batman. Take your imaged wreath and instead lay it on the long forgotten grave of your common sense.

I reckon its ok, its doesnt have a particularly bad joke attached. However, there may be aural ambiguity between "Vault" and "Volt". i reckon "Volt".

No come on, if your going to mess up your kid's life have the strength of conviction to torpedo your own too, it's only fair.

If you're gonna go with a fallout reference, then how about Cazador, like someone said? Or Deathclaw? Or Jet, after the chem? Or Brahmin? Or Ed-e? Or Rad-X?
Just throwin' these out there.

Fair? You think the criminals of this city care about fairness? They only care about themselves, and causing pain. I plan to put a stop to it.

Jet might be a cool girl's name. ^_^

Oh, also, I'm Batman.

You're the parent, it's ultimately up to you.

My advice: C'mon dude, you're acting like a twelve your old. A kid isn't like a dog you can name whatever you want that just chills in your house for a decade or so. A kid is a person. And I'm sorry, I'd be really mad at my parents if they named me something as stupid as "Vault". Kids are mean, don't give them one more reason to mock YOUR kid.

In hindsight almost all of the names in the world are really archaic words, like Peter and Craig being rock-based names.

Kindly feel free to read any of the eleventy-million responses I've already given to these points.

Or don't, whatever. I've got a city to protect.

Sounds like you have your mind made up on this one. Another parent naming their child a weird name so their kid will be "different" I think it's a shame that the story of a kids name will be based on a dungeon in a bunch of above average games. It's the same as all those people in the 60's who named their kids Star-child or something. You make a kid different by how you raise it not by how you name it. And knowing your kid will have a rough time because you were selfish and wanted to name it "Vault" is pretty fucking twisted in my opinion.

Hard to have a balanced view of the world if everyone judges you negatively before they meet you.
World's tough enough on the kid. don't make it tougher. Or do since you made your mind up and this is less a "should I?" thread and more a "reassure me" one.
