Would naming my kid "Vault" be a detriment to him in life? Or a bonus giving him instant geek-cred?

Gee, so many prophets of doom and gloom. I think that Vault is a great name, a strong name.

Is the world destined to only have a finite set of names to choose from, because anything outside of David, Mark and Paul is just so new and radical that it's not even worth considering? Wasn't every name new once upon a time?

FWIW, my better half is a teacher. Here are some first names of her students...

Darcy
Tenneson
Finlay
Walter
Aston
Declan
Prescott

Traditional, respectable names, for sure. But I am glad I am not named any of them... I would feel so pompous!!

Referring to 'plain' names having no problems... I have a friend called Peter Smith. He has troubles hiring a taxi over the phone, since they think it is a name he just made up. So he uses 'Gabriel Knight' and he has no problems (google it if you don't recognise the reference). Go figure!

Here's a real life example of what you are considering. Some pros and cons.

If it's his middle name I don't see the problem. He wont discover it till his teens anyway. And by then you should have introduced him to Fallout one way or another.
I have a middle name and never use it. It's just there in my ID.

Also, if you say 'Vault' about 20 times it loses its meaning but doesn't become an ugly word in my opinion.

One question though. Will his initials become AVP? Because that movie sucked and you shouldn't punish your kids like that.

Since you have plenty of arguments on both sides here I'll be completely not helpful and fight for both!

Don't do it.
Do it.

Ok seriously though, I kinda like the sound of Vault but probably wouldn't recommend it as a name, the only reason I'd consider is because it's meant to be a middle name.
Just be careful about how it mixes with the first and last. =/

Nah, it'd probably be TVA. And agreed.

Name him Pip, with his middle name being Boy. Would bea wesome.
Well, we've already covered Pip, and around here (the Southern US), naming anyone 'Boy' is just asking for trouble.

Interesting enough, my wife and I were just discussing what name would be a good normal compliment to it. I'm taking that as a sign that she's on board. /fistpump

I genuinly don't understand how people keep giving their children crap names, it's not exactly hard to think up a normal name for your kid is it look: John, David, Michael, look there's three and the best you could come up with is bloody Vault? Are you going out of your way to make a crap decision?

I would suggest that perhaps, in my opinion, John, David and Michael are boring names. See how opinions work? Pretty sweet, amirite?

You're gonna have your kid trolled for life.

Pick a real name, like... Joseph. Jacob. Christopher. Lee. Something masculine.

Is it supposed to be a Fallout reference? If it is, it's not very clever, funny, or will never net him "nerd cred". It's a stupid name.

I can't even imagine Fallout fans finding it funny (And I've been one for almost 10 years now).

Something masculine? That wouldn't by any change have something to do with your raging bodybuilder fetish?

Yes but names are supposed to be boring, you don't get "cool names" you get boring ones and crap ones. We don't live in a cartoon you maniac, experience your poor child's pain and go around introducing yourself as Vault or Batman or whatever other nonsense your brain shit out for a month and see what it's like.

Well, I know children named Cash and other similar names. I honestly don't think that is that bad. I'd go for it if your partner feels the same.

Or, he could be trolling ignorant haters that hate on someone cause of their name, for life. At least he wouldn't get the disappointment I had from hearing my teachers list off about 3-6 other people with my name.

I've been a Fallout fan since the original (my friend bought it at launch, I borrowed it a week later and fell in love). And I don't think it's funny, I think it's cool. Damn cool.

GODDAMN AWESOME is all I can imagine it being. In fact, I will now demand that everyone refers to me as Batman.

Wait, is this a fallout reference?
Sort of. I run a video game show on an site dedicated to such, and Vault is part of my stage name. It became the default short version, and it stuck. That name was based on Fallout, yes. This one is, by proxy, if that makes any kind of sense.

Ok go on then, change it by deed poll it's not hard.
1. I have no idea what a deed poll is.

2. In the States (where I reside), it is quite pricey to legally change your name.
