Would naming my kid "Vault" be a detriment to him in life? Or a bonus giving him instant geek-cred?

Pretty much right up there.^

Yeah, I'd like to name my kid (if it's a boy) Vault. Don't ask me why gender matters, but Vault doesn't seem like a girly name to me. It represents hidden treasures and the ability to literally leap any obstacle. Plus, it's kind of avant-garde.

Also, for a while, on my game-broadcasting channel on another site, Vault is part of my screen name, and that was my default nickname given by my fans, so it'd kind of add that sense of Jr. to his name without actually adding Jr. (I'm a lot like Indiana Jones in my opinions on the Junior moniker.)

Anyways, am I setting him up for a lifetime of torment, or am I giving an awesome, life-long gift? What do you think, Escapists?

(Note: I don't really consider this politics, but if any mods believe that it is, please, feel free to move it to that forum. ^_^)

EDIT: I mean as a middle name, not a single name like Madonna or Jesus. So, he can pick which he goes by, Vault, or whatever first name I give him.
AS a middle name It would be fine, however it is difficult to say while not knowing your surname.
I would recommend doing it, as he doesn't have to go by his middle name. and can pull out his geek cred when he wants.

I'd say if you want to give your child a geeky name, you should choose something that's already a name but carries geeky connotations. Like Kilian or John Henry if you're interested in Fallout-related names.

Just saw the edit... that was a pretty big piece of information to leave out. Still, I stand by what I've said.
Yeah, that's my bad, I guess. I just assumed people would understand I meant as ONE of his names, not his only one.

Don't name your kid just assuming that he'll be into all the same things you're into. So you'll be 'training him early' into geekdom, eh? Did you do exactly what your parents wanted you to do with your life? Is it any fairer to expect your child to be a gamer and a geek than it is to expect him to be a football star? Or for that matter, to try and decide his sexual orientation? Surely if the name means so much to you, YOU should be the one to wear it. And if he takes to your interests like you hope and he's a geek anyway, he can change his own name to one HE decides, and has special significance for him.

Don't ya think?
Yeah, but no one ever gave me the opportunity to change my name, and I hate it. And Like I've said before, I'd totally change my name if we weren't saving money for the baby. Name changing is like 500 bucks here in the States, iirc.

As for the interests, again as I mentioned earlier, are mere suggestions. Of course I'll try and push a little gaming on him, but no more than your 'average' dad would with, say, fishing.

I personally like the name, it's different but not ridiculous like naming your kid apple or pear or something.
Thanks. ^_^

Thanks, mate! but this is coming from the kind of woman that would give her kid a middle name like 'Wrex' or 'Megatron' or something nerdy like that.
I now love you. Don't tell my wife.
Your wife has nothing to worry about! you're probably way older than me if you're married! But wow, If you're kid ends up being as awesome as you are, then I think you have nothing to worry about. Haha.

Well you're making the assumption that children will even know about/care about Fallout by the time your kid reaches school.
They'll all be too busy with their hover boards and the like.
Personally, I think it's silly, even a little cruel but each to their own I guess.
As I stated before, it's not really an in-joke that I expect everyone to 'get'. And by the time he grows up, he'll probably be hoverboarding with other bojo's named Tron, Akuma and Puckman, given the rise of this trend.

And I don't want to be cruel, that's the farthest thing from my mind. I genuinely think Vault is a cool name. Manly, stoic, active, and a bit mysterious.
In-Joke.
Joke.
You're considering giving your child a name as a joke?
Not only should you not name your child Vault I'd starting to doubt you should have kids.
Okay, I'm exaggerating, but still, please don't.

I noticed you said 'mate'. Wanna hear something hilarious? My wife is from England and 7 years younger than me. ^_^

Go ahead, it's a cool name and cool names are cool. I plan on naming my kid Gunning, maybe they can hang out and fight crime or something.

Oh no, I knew you weren't intending it to be his only name. What I said was based entirely on the assumption you meant "Vault ".

Please don't, I can't stand parents who give their children stupid names (and I've met a fair few :/)

Ultimately just watch this:

Hmmmm... that seems a bit too... stuck up(?) for me. I don't like the idea of having a 'colorless' name and am actually quite depressed about my own now. I'll give you a hint, my first name is one of the most common names in the English speaking world and it's also Biblical. Also, also, my screen name holds a clue.
Oh, oh oh, is it.....David? OT: The more I look at Vault, the more I like it. I think it's great,a middle name can and should be wacky.

Haha! I'm from Australia, but not still, not a huge difference. By younger, I meant still in highschool, so I thought I'd give my input because I've got a middle name that I hate. I dunno, Maybe it's me being a huge nerdy and a Fallout fan, but don't be worried about what the other people are saying. It's your and your wife's choice and it's not like your going to have Vault as your kid's first name.

Ha, Mate, you're pretty awesome.

a friend of mine just names her newborn Blaze Ryder. which, if you're unfamiliar, is (at least in my parts) terminology for driving around backroads aimlessly smoking weed. i'm not sure how life is gonna go for Blaze, or if he'll choose to just go by Ryder by the time it's his choice, but point being, think of a name and think of how YOUR life would've turned out if you had that name. if you can honestly say it would be the same or better, please proceed.

No, I call people whatever they tell me to call them. In high school, I knew this kid named "Jason Bella" who everyone just called Bella (this was before Twilight). He introduced himself as such, so that's what I called him. It was kind of funny... when one of the teachers called him Jason, it took me a second to register who she was referring to.
