Would naming my kid "Vault" be a detriment to him in life? Or a bonus giving him instant geek-cred?

Thanks, bro. That makes me feel good. Even though you're obviously biased. (It's cool, so am I.)

Why can't my middle name be Vault? Even though I'm a girl. My middle name is very unfitting. rose. Grrr.

Yeah... if you don't mind people jumping on/over him regularly. I don't think many people will get what it actually means.

Tbh, I can't see it giving him "insta-geek cred" even if he does turn out geeky. Tends to either make people lol at you/your parents or feel sorry for the "stupid" name.

Personally I'd give any kids I may potentially have "normal" names, and they can pick a nickname later in life if they want one.

Completely. I'll use it as a lesson about how someone hating on you because of your name makes them ignorant and petty.
This is risky. How do you know that your child will listen to you and only you and ignore all his peers? Just because you are mature enough to have that mentality you can't expect a small kid to be the same!

Also I agree with this guy.

Overreacting, much? The only reason you had to ask here was because you already knew it wasn't the right decision to name your kid Vault. You were just hoping a bunch of random people on the internet who liked games would go "OH MY GOD! THAT IS AN AWESOME NAME FOR A KID BECAUSE IT HAS TO DO WITH A VIDEO GAME!!!!", am I right?
Look, we do not say these things just to make you feel bad, we are just giving our honest opinion, which we believe will benefit your child and yourself. Our societies are not as kind and understanding as that.

That's the thing though... kids are going to make fun of whatever they want, for any reason. Being named John Smith has never saved anyone from bullies. It's going to happen either way, and if it's about something as subjective as their name, I'd be more than happy to point out how I banged each of those bullies moms last night.
Again, this is purely subjective. Your kid might not have this mentality. You can't plan your child's personality. He is not a canvas on which you paint whatever you want, it's not that simple!

It sounds like something from a jrpg dont you think. Anyway, i somewhat like it actually it just sounds manly (seriously just imagine a strong man with the name of vault, you wouldn't want to screw with him, but hey, mind you kids might vault over to give him stuff to keep.... safe.

If the kid asks why, just tell him you were thinking of keeping him safe at the time, and where do you keep things safe, in a secure vault.

I'm genuinely surprised at the amount of hate and name-calling I'm getting for something as simple as a name.

Thanks, though. If some of you are the types of people that he'd deal with in life, I don't want him to have to.

Bye, dream.
Overreacting, much? The only reason you had to ask here was because you already knew it wasn't the right decision to name your kid Vault. You were just hoping a bunch of random people on the internet who liked games would go "OH MY GOD! THAT IS AN AWESOME NAME FOR A KID BECAUSE IT HAS TO DO WITH A VIDEO GAME!!!!" and convince you it was the right choice, am I right?
No, I was actually looking for opinions. I mean, of course I'm biased, I fucking came up with the idea. And sure, I'm going to be dejected when it's not adored by everyone... or at least when people tell me out and out "It's a stupid fucking name and you're stupid for doing it/I'd punch you in the head when I turned 18/etc."

Sure, I was hoping for a little bit of lenience from fellow gamers, especially Escapists, but man, this was kind of unexpected in it's fervor.
As I said, it's pretty selfish if the only reason you're naming your kid Vault is because you find some kind of personal amusement out of it. I'm curious about something though (and forgive me if I've missed something): is this for some theoretical future baby, or do you actually have a baby on the way. If the latter, what does the wife think about it?

Think about it carefully. Is the reference even going to mean anything in 5-10 years? Does it really mean anything to most people right now? When I hear the name Vault, my mind instantly jumps to pole-vaulting.

I'm curious though... if you want something related to video games, why not something a little more normal? I'm sure there is a character or something with a name you like you could use.

If you want to force your kid to have a stupid name, at least have the decency to make it a middle name so (s)he's not mocked endlessly for it.

And if it's a girl, how about Drawer?

What about Couch? Did you consider that one?
I can think of heaps that you might not have thought of...

Briefcase?
Mattress?
Table? Good sturdy name that one...
Hahaha! XD

You have a thing for furniture, don't you?
Rule 34.

But yeah... weird name, but it does have a certain ring to it.

But the middle name has to be a 2 syllable word. Like Vault Howard or something.

Thanks, mate! but this is coming from the kind of woman that would give her kid a middle name like 'Wrex' or 'Megatron' or something nerdy like that.

Don't name your kid just assuming that he'll be into all the same things you're into. So you'll be 'training him early' into geekdom, eh? Did you do exactly what your parents wanted you to do with your life? Is it any fairer to expect your child to be a gamer and a geek than it is to expect him to be a football star? Or for that matter, to try and decide his sexual orientation? Surely if the name means so much to you, YOU should be the one to wear it. And if he takes to your interests like you hope and he's a geek anyway, he can change his own name to one HE decides, and has special significance for him.

Don't ya think?

I wouldn't recommend it, I mean, I have one of the most average first names ever, Jack, and some of the names that people at my school come up with are absolutely...colourful to say the least, and don't even start me on my last name >.>

Anyway, ultimately, it's your decision, if you do do it, make in a his middle name, but other that, kids are cruel, so they'll probably make up some sort of play on whatever name you give him, so, I dunno, damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Why don't you call him somthing more subtle like Jericho or even Amata if it's a girl. Those are both nice names.

At least name him after one of the characters and not the scenery.... lol.

Just saw the edit... that was a pretty big piece of information to leave out. Still, I stand by what I've said.

Ehh, you're kinda riding heavily on him being a geek like us.

Maybe he's a jock. Doubt he'd like that name.

Maybe try something a little less gregarious. My mom named me after a Soap Opera character. Luckily it was a normal name.

I personally like the name, it's different but not ridiculous. (like naming your kid Apple or Pear or something, that's just pretentious)

Uhm... I'm pretty sure that's what kids are. Sure, with some random free-will thrown in, but most kids turn out very similar to their parents, no matter how hard they might want to argue the issue. In fact, most that take issue with it seem to me to be the type that are just mad because it's true.

And sure, I'm going to be selfish... it's MY child. It's part of me, y'know?

That's what I was thinking, too. Very JRPG with ERPG roots. Covering the whole canvas of gaming culture, if you will.

Also, yes, I like that it's synonymous with overcoming obstacles and keeping treasures safe.

Yeah, I edited that into my OP. Thanks for out and out calling it stupid though. Appreciate that.
