I might buy a Wii U just for Smash, though there are other games I want. A Metroid Prime title would make me snatch up a Wii U right now!

Nope - I always wait until more stuff I'd like is out for it. It doesn't usually take that long, in fact it's usually becomes "I want it but can I afford it?" as opposed to "Are there any more games I'd like to get?".

It's been killing me that I can't play Kingdom Hearts 3D but I do plan on getting a 3DS in the next few months so... hooray!

Depends on the price, the console, and the game. When I look back at my psp, I only owned like 6 games for it and most weren't that great, but I played Portable Ops online for almost an entire summer. I'd say that much use would warrant the cost of the psp even if it was the only game I bought for it. I'm considering doing the same thing for the new Smash and getting a Wii U, but I'd only do that if the Wii U cost less than $300 and I had easy access to friends to play it with (like roommates). Of course, after Nintendo said they wanted to focus on "hard core games", I think there'll be other exclusives to get for it

The closest I've gotten was Valkyria Chronicles. It was easily one of the best RPGs this generation had but unfortunately, the sequel was a PSP-only game. I haven't caved (yet) but I expect that I will get it eventually...
If you do, I'd get one used from a local retailer. I wanted a psp 3000 to hack and play GBA games on with good color balance (the 2000 is so white washed) so I bought one for $100 off amazon and the one they sent me was completely filled with dead pixels and the battery was bloated. I sent it back with no intent to try it again. But if you can't get a hold of a good model, you can emulate psp games

Pretty sure I would - but I've never had to.

I currently own a PS1, PS2 and PS3, and I'm going to buy a PS4 because there are LOTS of great-looking games coming out for it - and, of course, because it's the next logical step for me as a console gamer with a Sony fixation.

However, if it weren't for the above, I'd still seriously consider buying the PS4 for Elder Scrolls Online alone. Ever since Oblivion came out, I've always wanted to be able to walk all the way from Black Marsh to Solitude! YEAH!

Seriously, that would be all kinds of epic. In Skyrim, I'll often step outside, say, Whiterun to run a quick errand in nearby Morthal - and end up returning after six months of in-game time, married to an Orc and with no idea what I initially set out to accomplish. I want to do the continent-sized equivalent of that!

I bought an Xbox 360 and a new TV for Bioshock. I bought a 3DS for Pokémon X. I'm giving serious thought to buying a Wii U for Hyrule Warriors.

So yeah, I would.

Did it for Infamous and a Playstation 3. Then inFamous Second Son and a Playstation 4. It was a thing, lol. I ended up loving other games too and that's what happened. I loved it. Getting a console for only one game and just...expanding.

I bought a Gamecube for Resident Evil 4, though by then the Gamecube was only 150 bucks. And it gave me the chance to play both Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and Wind Waker, for which I am very thankful.

I bought a PSP ages ago, it came with 5 games, but I haven't played any of them. The only reason I bought it was for Final Fantasy Dissidia 012 and that's the only game that's been in my PSP. Must say I've got a lot out of it though! I have several hundred hours of play on 1 save with 100% completion and I STILL play it. I'll be getting a Wii-U purely for Smash as well, so I'm going to go ahead and say if you really want the game, then do it.

Title.

I'm badly torn at present. Really want to pick up a game and unfortunately there is no PC port of if and probably never will be.

That said...ps3s are still not what I would call cheap :|.
I say yes, go for it. Just because there's only one game you're interested in right now, doesn't mean there won't be more later.

Also, having the console may lead to you picking up games you wouldn't normally play, which might lead you to discover new interests :)

That's how I make most of my console buying decisions, and it haven't made a purchase I really regret yet

I've never done it for one game, but certainly have bought systems for one fringe genre. As an example, I mail-ordered a Japanese Sega Saturn just so I could play a handful of pricy Japanese shmups that I'd picked up over the years (Batsugun, Battle Garrega). It turned out being a solid decision, as that system had a huge library of games in that genre. Pretty soon, I'll be doing the same with a 360, as I've got a small pile of those region-free Cave games stacking up and no console to use them on. Someday, I might seek out a Japanese PC-Engine with CD capability, just so I can play more classic shooters like Darius, Tatsujin (Truxton), etc....

Nope, not even for one developer. Naughty Dog have made some of my favourite games ever but I'm so fed up of console gaming that, barring a HUGE price drop on the PS4, I'm going to mainly be a PC gamer for the forseeable future. Shame really as I desperately want to play the new Uncharted when that comes out but there has never, and likely will never, be any game worth £400 to me.

No. Im not a PC only user. I would be an idiot if I was because there are great games that come out on a variety of systems. What I am is a guy whos been burned to many times because I bought into hype. Once bitten, twice shy and all that. Currently nothing on the xbone or PS4 has great games Im interested in. Since you keep linking these buzz words about uncharted 4 Ill tackle that one right now. Uncharted, to me, is a franchise thats not very good. I played the first two uncharted games and the linear gameplay and uninteresting characters did not endear me to the franchise. The story of those games was even worse as if cobbled together to visit some set pieces instead of working with a clear narrative. I have no reason to believe that uncharted 4 will be any different (dont even get me started on the capped framerate which makes the game feel sluggish and sometimes unresponsive). Lets also be honest that any info they release can be but not necessarily is falsified. Do I need to remind you of Gearbox's fake demos of aliens colonial marines? You can say "it doesnt happen on consoles" and youll be just as wrong because it already happened with Aliens, I dont care that it was multiplatform it still happened which means any company could do the same. EA, ubisoft, naughty dog, Valve. They all have the potential to be just as crooked as Gearbox was so I wait to see the actual game. You should too.

However, to be fair I havnt played Uncharted 4 maybe it will be the game that changes things for me but even seeing your screenshots makes me wary of the whole thing. Maybe it will run at 60 frames per second, maybe it will be 1080p, maybe it will have the greatest story ever told, maybe it will have the best writing ever, but I havnt seen the actual game yet so for all I know those could be more lies. I refuse to buy into the preorder culture and hype train again, Ive been burned to many times but most of all Ive learned that the old saying "good things come to those that wait" is true. If I wait to see the game and its amazing I dont miss out on anything. If I wait and find out the game is awful I save myself some money. Either way I come out ahead.

As for being a fan of these exclusive develoepers youre setting yourself up for failure there. I was once a bioware fan, then we got Dragon age 2 (while not the train wreck everyone claims it was its still not very good), The old republic ,and Mass effect 2 and 3. I thought they could do no wrong and I was wrong. I havnt sworn off Dragon age inquisition, future mass effect games, or future IPs from bioware but I am being more careful. You can make the argument (as you did) that naughty dog is different but they are a company made of human beings and just as failible as anyone else. Being a fan of a developer doesnt help anyone but once again being patient and waiting has already proven to be a healthy mentality for me.

If you want to buy into the preorder hype culture then by all means its your money and I have no right to tell you how to spend it. However I advise you to be more careful and wait till the products come out and have proven themselves to be what you want out of a game. The choice is yours

However getting back on topic. There are still not enough games for consoles that I want to play out. So I havnt bought one and currently have no plans to buy one.

The PC community adores Witcher 3; but will it live
up to its predecessor?

If those games just don't interest you, then sure, avoid the console; but I'm saying that SONY's exclusives have earned the respect of hype because they have yet to be proven otherwise. Uncharted 2 was the GOTY for 2009. Followed up Journey in 2012. Then Last of Us in 2013. That's three SONY titles in five years.

I've never been sold on 3rd party developers; to me, they were just fillers for the actual meat of the industry: Square Enix, Konami and the other odd titles. 3rd Party are more often prone to stay safe or debilitate a franchise for the sake of $$.

But I don't think you understand the kind of freedom SONY's exclusive developers have. They aren't harassed or kept in check by SONY execs. Last of Us could never happen by Ubisoft or EA; like Uncharted, it's too niche and focused a title to hit all their franchise check points. Same for Beyond: Two Souls and Shadow of the Colossus. These are all experimental titles that would never pass mustard; and SONY knew they weren't going to sell 5 Million in their opening launch week or maybe in their life time; but they want to offer AAA variety to their platform, and that's what I respect.

Not to mention that console titles just have a different feel to them. It's like they know exactly what they are; and they aren't trying to be everything AND a sand-box just to appeal to every genre. I don't like messy, unfocused games; so maybe that's why I like Uncharted, Kingdom Hearts and the Final Fantasy franchises. (And it's why I only own 2 Assassin's Creed games.)

Maybe?

It would either have to be an amazing game, a fairly inexpensive console or I'd have to have a lot more liquid income I could toss around to not care about spending all that money on one game.

I have done this. Bought a PS3 to play The Last of Us. Sure, there were other games on the system that looked good, but TLoU was 100% the reason I bought it.

Absolutely no regrets. Best purchase I've made in years.

I would buy a Wii-U for a new great Metroid Game along the lines of the Prime series (Samus's monologues restrained to her head thanks). Sure there's enough "alright" looking games on the Wii-U but nothing that would make me jump up and buy one at present, but would be nice to go along with the aforementioned Metroid game.

Well more fool me. In a beer and nicotine fueled stupor I ordered the best priced Ps3 I could find online. And the game I wanted.

Then I saw that the Ps3 would be delivered tomorrow. And the game...mid October.

Shit.

EDIT: Different topic, so let me take it to a different thread.
