To anyone who really talks about inhabitants of industrialized countries not getting enough proteins because of a vegan diet:

You're silly.

To anyone who says you need animal products for bodybuilding:

If you need to grow so many muscles that your affluent society cannot provide you with enough vegan proteins:

I'm scared. Really. Because there's absolutely no need for it. I think one of the world champions in body building is vegan, and this means that somewhere on this forum there are people that have more muscles than him, and I, a 180lbs gym member, am starting to piss them off.

If anyone tells me about the higher qualities of a certain protein:

Those are only important in an unbalanced diet, since a combination of several proteins adds up.

In short: scratch the protein argument.

And I don't think that any user of the escapist forum can still say that they're living naturally, or that their meat consumption is natural. Because that would mean you'd eat lots of meat when you hunted an animal, and then you feed on seeds and fruit until you go hunting again.

The only critical vitamin you need to supplement is B12. B12 is produced in your intestine, but you cannot resorb enough of it. Many food products are enriched in B12, such as certain soy milk brands, and there are pills such as "Veg 1" by the vegan society. Note that B12 is a trace vitamin that will be depleted slowly, so it gets dangerous after many years. I got my blood tested on B12 and homocysteine (another indicator for B12 deficite) among other things last year, and so far my values are fine.

If you wanna stay healthy EAT meat (and vegetables). Eating only vegetables will worsen your imune system, bones, muscles etc.

No, I don't think there is any need for me to be a vegan. That being said I do have a rule for eating living things, 'Never eat anything you have an emotional attachement to' Yeah, pretty simple rule eh? Incidentally this rule is why I can't choose my own lobster or crab at my local Safeway. I like animals too much, so I grow attached to them pretty quickly.

I would only become a Vegan if it gave me super-powers like in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.
Otherwise it's just not worth it, I like burgers too much.

How is being a vegan healthy? *Looks at stomach* Oh right...

But I'm seriously not sure if you can get the same health benefits from just plant material, the human digestive system is designed to take in both animal and plant material, so to be as healthy as possible i'd say you would need both IMO. But I wouldn't turn vegan even if it was more healthy, I need cheeseburger and that is two wrongs in their books.
I'm doing a nutrition course in college, and with this in mind:

- Most herbivores have microbes in their gut to provide protein, as they die in the gut and are absorbed by the body, because they can't get all of their required nutrients from plant matter alone.
- All carnivores eat plant matter to some degree, as they also cannot get all of their essential nutrients from meat alone.
- All herbivores eat animal matter from time to time, usually inadvertantly, but those which eat meat too often actually get addicted to it. So even herbivores know that meat is the way to go.
- The human body is designed to be omnivorous, as we have neither a specialised gut, nor specialised teeth

I was vegetarian for four years (or so I thought, but that's a different story entirely...), and it didn't do me that much good considering I was putting weight on from eating eggs for protein. If other alternatives were less expensive and more easily obtainable, then it probably wouldn't have made that much of a difference.

On topic completely, however, I probably could go completely vegan - I'm lactose intolerant, so it wouldn't really affect me that much.

No, because that is absolutely retarded.

No chicken died for your egg. No cow suffered for your milk. It's unnecessary and also a bit unhealthy.

Nope, I would not ever turn vegan. I once dated a girl who was vegetarian and that was already way too troublesome. I do have to admit that being able to make pathetic meat jokes was funny for a short time.

I could never become vegan I need meat with every meal or it doesn't feel right for some reason. My life would probably be less stressful if I wasn't always trying to find some all the time.
actually it's proven that a vegan diet helps lower stress and blood pressure

and don't think all we eat is raw carrots ... there's a HUGE selection of delicious dishes from all over the world ... even if you don't want to change your lifestyle of become vegan/vegetarian ... i really do recommend you try some vegan cuisine .. indian/japanese/african/italian ... beautiful food
Stop trying to make us go vegan! If pressed, all we need to do is say 'BACON' and the argument is over by default! Plus, if we all go vegan, we would hike the price of your food up, causing a vegan overload, lowering the price of bacon, and making me happier!
Among bacon, i cant give up pork, pepperoni, salami, and smoked gouda.

I'm tempted, but I've not made the leap yet. I've been vegetarian for 8 years, but, especially when I was living in Russia, I couldn't make the leap to veganism.

People need to enjoy life, not try to live the longest one.

Long does not equal good.

EDIT: Also plants live as well, to eat them because they have no face is hypocrite.

Explanation?

most male chicks get scrambled as soon as they hatched. Most cows rarely see daylight and have lots of health problems including mental disorders.

Look, I don't like the moral debate, but please explain how you justify your comment.

That's not necessarily the way it has to be. This goes without saying that you don't buy the cheap ass shit made from animals who live their entire life knee deep in their own feces.

No, you pay some more and get these products from animals living in much better conditions.

Only if being vegan would give me psychic powers. in that case, goodbye, cakes! So long, Milk Chocolate! I'm going to become a psychic superman that can punch holes in the moon!
Sure you might have psychic powers, but with great powers, comes great temptations...

OT: Why is it unethical to eat animals? Aren't you killing plants to go vegan? Which are, you know, living things?

"Are those nuts? You're eating baby plants? YOU MONSTER!"

No, never.

As you said we are omnivores, we are built to eat meat, fruit, veg etc.
