Would you ever get rid of your Television?

My console is plugged into a monitor, so not into my TV. And I was thinking the other night, whilst playing on my console and with my back to the TV, should I just sell my TV and cancel my cable subscription?

The money I would save from that would help pay for an even faster internet connection, and so I could even then just watch what few programs I still watch online.
(most seem to be available)

So, would you ever do this? Or have you already?

I wouldn't. I need my TV for sports, and I like to watch some TV shows.

Plus, my TV is bigger than the monitor. I like it better.

There happens to be a TV and cable in my house. But i don't derive more than 1% of my entertainment from it.

In all probability i'm going to hook a nice home made PC up to a decent HD TV Via HDMI as well as a 360 and just use that as my entertainment hub. Internet and XBOX on the same TV would be all that i'd ever need.

Best of all possible worlds.

Since I could just get my shows from the internet, I could get rid of my cable.

But the whole T.V? I'm a console tard, so that won't be allowed.

TV? No. Cable? Possibly. Everything's on Hulu and shit these days, my family's considering ditching the cable TV and getting some real high-speed internet instead. Thanks to the magic of USB/Audio-video cables, we often put Hulu shows onto the Widescreen TV.

Plus, Hulu only has ONE commercial each commercial break (for now). I see no major downsides to this plan.

I already did. I didn't watch it ever and I can just watch TV online.

PC fanboy here though.

I have a nice TV for console gaming, but in regards to tossing the cable and just watching all your shows online, that's what I do, and I enjoy it far more that way anyways.

It seems like what you're really asking is "would you ever get rid of cable." And the answer is yes, I already did, and I saved somewhere in the area of one metric shit-ton of money in the process. Now I just watch TV on Netflix's streaming service through my 360, for a much more reasonable price.

EDIT: Also, I watch anything I want when I want this way, and I don't have to deal with commercials. So, bonus points. I highly suggest doing just that. It's a decision you won't regret.

It's nice playing on a TV, because 1) it's a bigger screen, and 2) no graphics card necessary. God, my computer is crap. It lags on Portal, even. I have to pull down the visual settings for every game I play a ton to ensure it doesn't crash on me. Also, I like watching some shows (not many, though). I think I could cancel my FiOS subscription and liv, though. The shows I do watch are all online anyway. I'd just use the TV for gaming.

I never watch TV anyways.

And I play PC.

I've gone years without a TV before, so sure, I could get rid of it again. But the one in my house currently isn't mine, so it stays. Least it doesn't cost me anything.

Sorry, I should have clarified that I 'did' mean stop watching TV shows.
(not just get rid of the actual TV)

Get rid of my TV?
Well I use it as my Computer Monitor, so I don't see that as a good thing.

Stop watching Cable on my TV?
Well I use Satellite, so I think I stopped that... not even sure I ever used Cable.

So-and-so Satellite TV? Nah, I like having it handy.
Good for when you feel like watching something, but have no clue as to what.

I dropped watching television. Completely useless box. Between netflix and the internet you really don't need it, and really, its not worth it in the least.
As for the actual set, that is worth keeping around, if to watch movies with friends, play console games, or even used as a monitor.

My TV just sort of sits there....it's like a living room demands the presence of one, but I literally never use it. I have no reason to. No cable, much better display on the monitor propped up right next to it for my 360. Which, is where I watch everything anyway. The TV's just sort of....there. And it's a fuzzy 32" CRT monster! Definite presence, for something so ignored....

...but I can't get rid of it! It's true!

Oh, in that case, uhm.....already have! Unless you mean stop watching TV shows, period, like no streaming and no DVDs, in that case, hell no!

If that's the case, then yes. Honestly, I don't know why I'm paying for cable -- I can't remember the last time I actually sat down and watched a show. I'll often put on Food Network for background noise, but that's not worth the $40.00 a month.

Wow, what a waste. Great topic -- you've inspired me to cancel my cable. /highfive

I wouldn't give up my T.V, but I would get a newer, bigger TV and hook up my computer, 360, wii, and all knick knacks to that and just give up cable.
(actually my dad's getting a new TV tomorrow and I'm going to take his older, slightly smaller one [for I do not have one in my room of beds])

If I ever had a setup like you described, I just might. Thing is, I'd need a pretty ballin'-ass monitor to compensate for my 42" plasma. I've tasted Blu-Ray, people! I can't go back now!
