This is going to be one of the few topics I start because I rarely think stuff without content to think about! But this came up recently.

The alleged Mayan end of the world is coming up, and they specified a date, time, and hell even starting fucking location.

When, or IF, the gods come to earth and starting doing whatever they do to destroy the world. Would you start a quest, and go try to stop their godly plans?

I personally would because as fun as sitting on my ass and playing Final Fantasy is, it really makes me wonder what kind of shit you go through in stopping the end of the world.
Besides, what do I have to lose? I have nothing to gain other than a little bit of fun before our inevitable deaths, and the chance to be loved and respected which equals money which equals MORE VIDEO GAMES.

What about all of you?

EDIT: Please stop pointing the Mayan part out to me. I don't specifically mean the mayans. I meant would you fight a god to stop the end of the world. The only reason I mentioned it was because that myth was what brought it up. Besides Dwightsteel already beat you all to it.

With the power of the God Emperor, we shall prevail from the twisted deities of the Warp!

But honestly, to preserve humanity and the world I would gladly lay down my life for the noble cause.

Depending on what religion you look at, not all gods are all powerful. Take a look at the Norse. They have an apple tree keeping THEM alive. Just go take that thing out, and BAM! You win.

Ok, people have really taken this thing out of control. There is no evidence to support the idea that the Mayans believed this was the end of civilization. A lot of historians merely think this is the resetting of the calendar to the Baktun 13.0.0.0.0. People take all these bits of Mayan legend and faint scriptures attached the calendars they've found, and assume it's the end of the world. Yes, the Mayans believe that gods came from the sky and created man. And yeah, they were a particularly advanced culture, but so where the Egyptians and the Greeks. These theories of Armageddon have been swimming around forever. Some people were convinced that it was all gonna be over in 95. Then everyone concluded that the year 2000 was the end. But then they realized that the new millennium didn't actually start till 01, so it was pushed back. Then 2006 people were humming about it. Now it's the time for people to start assuming that they are channeling the spirits of the Mayans, because that's the only way they could possibly know what the Mayans meant with the end of their calendar.

I feel it depends on the morality of the situation. If the gods in question are the 'worship me or die' type (like some fundamental christians seem to believe in), then I will happily pick up my fake katanas and make my futile sacrafice to prove a point, and deny such god the satisfaction. If we're talking a benevalent, 'unwavering love of humanity' (or life in general) type god (like more sane christians believe in), I wouldn't lift a finger to stop them, and they'd probably convince me out of my agnosticism too. I'd probably fight for a god like that.

On that note, if the gods do come down, and I'm forced to have to fight for my survival, then hell yeah, I'm gonna fight. Futile or not, I won't die without a fight.

Are we talking like greek style gods, or the Christian god? If its greek style then yes, they can be killed(see: God of War)but not a christian god because the christian god is immortal and all pwerful so it would be wasted effort.

To answer my original question, would you go out in a blaze of glory against the gods? I was using the Mayans as an example of one such armageddon event.

EDIT: You did sometime while I was writing that...

I'm preety sure that the only way humanity could win a fight against the Gods themselves is if somehow find a way of fusing Chuck Norris with Mr T.

yeah, sorry about that. The 2012 thing is sort of a pet peave of mine. I should have just answered straight away.
