No, it can't be someone you know, it's just a random [feel free to select age, gender, situation etc]
But would you? Personally, I wouldn't. It may sound a bit dickish, but if they got into that situation, I don't want to be the one being punished for it.

Just wondering what everyone else's opinion is.

Only if I got to stay in Valhalla.

Best. Afterlife. Ever.

Seriously though, I don't actually know. Hmmm.

For a random person, not a chance. There are people I know that I would give my life for, but I'm far too selfish to sacrifice everything to save a total stranger.

I know I would, because I'm the type of person who would try and help someone with asking for anything in return.

Maybe ONE person...but I'd rather live by her side than have to give my life. Guess I'm asking for a third option.

Without any information, no. But depending on circumstances, maybe. Why is this person in mortal danger? How old is this person? Those are the type of things i'd need to know.

Knowing myself, I wouldn't give my life for them, but I'd regret it later.

If I had complete control over myself and enough time to think about it, I probably would give my life for them, though.

yeah, i would agree. i would need confirmation of a decent afterlife for me before i did.
so far, i see none, therefore screw the fucker. they can get shot/stabbed for all i care. even if it was, say, my wife/girlfriend. self-preservation is the key to long life, and the key to a long and happy life is outliving everyone else. those are the two philosophies i live by. im a cynic.

Change that to two people and you've got a harder question.

I'd probably say no to one person, but if two died so I could live I'd feel like a murderer.

For my friends without a doubt, for people I don't know unlikely. I would like to think I would be noble giviing away my life to save another but in reality I don't think I have the guts to do it.

It would depend on the situation... but admittedly, probably not.

I need to look out for myself first and foremost, and if by helping someone else I'm putting myself in direct danger, then I would likely not get personally involved. Would I contact someone whose job it is to help (like fire fighters or police)? Absolutely. Would I help in ways that don't risk my own life? Sure. But if I had reason to believe I wouldn't be walking away from the incident, I'd hold back.

Absolutely, yes. I couldn't imagine a better way to die than saving the life of someone else. That person, and everyone close to them, will remember you forever.

But you'll never hear the tales of praise or the stories of heroism. Wouldn't that bother you in the slightest? Worse yet, what if you're forgotten altogether, or are just a footnote in this person's life history? I like where you're going with that, but I'm not sure it necessarily translates well into real life.
