I miss joysticks
Amen. I have broken my fair share with the frantic dodges I used to need... Gamepads are much more useful, but lack the "joy" in joysticks.

Maybe I'm in a nostalgic mood or maybe I read too much marketing related decisions regarding games that I want to talk about this but, here goes.

Being born in the early 80s, it was amazing, this new thing called a Nintento came out, I could move a character around in a really weird environment that I used to dream about in bright shiny colors. I watched cartoons about a 13 year old teenager (Mighty max) who opened up portals to other places with a huge sword wielding barbarian, a know it all sage *cough* chicken *cough* to do battle with a bloody Demon who could conjure up Lava creatures.

Now all I see are cooperations running everything that comes out game wise, innovation is a dirty word for investors, main stream is something that became the norm once they could digest innovation and many... MANY movies suck because they want to be friendly to everyone and end up denigrating the generation that made space movies and fantasy movies POPULAR.(ok have a billion eggs you're bound to have a million bad ones in there)

I for one would gladly go back to having low budget games made by some guy in his garrage if only to not feel like a pawn in a massive chess game, forced to try and enjoy crap because that's all I'm going to get for the most part.
I'm perfectly allright with people making mainstream stuff, I just wish that people were willing to innovate a bit more, add color, touch risque materia *coughsoputterCATHERINEcoughsputter*
I also liked how certain japanese companies do that as well, still, nobody is going to convince me that pokemon is a bad game...NOBODY

Haha, try going without a mobile phone or the internet for a week and you will realise how sweet the current day is. The irony that you are using the internet to portray a wish for life without it.
On the other hand I can see the point you are making, some things were better back then, however 7-8 times out of 10 it will be better current day.

Haha.

I'm only 21, and I still wouldn't go back to the mid-nineties, when I was PC Gaming. Jesus Christ that was a miserable time to be a gamer. Crappy Full Motion Video games, truly terrible PlayStation titles, twas not a happy time.

I don't look back at gaming with Nostalgia Goggles. I actually keep a lot of my old and bad games to remind myself whenever I start thinking 'things were better back then'. I just look over, see such stalwart titles as 'Bugs Bunny: Lost in Time', 'Star Wars: Demoltiion', '102 Dalmations: Puppies to the Rescue' and remember that things are much better now when I see 'Mass Effect 2' or 'Portal' in my newer stack.

The mainstream games of the early 90's are the indie games of today, just find somewhere that sells lots of indie games (I suggest steam) and buy those, you'll soon discover that there are still great, memorable, and innovative games being made today.

In a word, no. To be completely honest, were I to list my top 10 favorite games of all time, shockingly few were made before 1995. Those would include Doom, Captain Skyhawk and Cabal for those who are interested. The very best games I've ever played were only released in the last decade or so, including System Shock 2, Baldur's Gate and Tribes.

I am 15 and I love the old games, they were really fun and I wold love to go back to those times, I also loved old style cartoons really fun to watch.
Holy shit, when a 15 year old states that they love the old games i.e. Ocarina of Time, that makes me feel really old.

And I'm only 23.
Lol, Ocarina of Time is one of my favourite games, it was my first N64 game and I loved every single minute of the game.
Where you sitting there, playing OoT thinking, 'Dude! This game is so retro! look at the size of those polygons!'

I remember when it was the best looking game around...
I remember when the original Star Fox on the SNES was the best looking game around.
Seriously the first time I played that game I was speechless. I had never seen anything like it at the time(I was about 7 years old then).

you know mainstream bigbudget games aren't the only games around, if you hate cooperative games and like mario platformers go and play meat boy, if you hate blockbuster movies go watch indie films where gay cowboys are eating pudding (lol, SP reference)

there are a LOT of games that are not mainstream, just look harder

Old Internet, several hours to download anything over 10mb. Needing to stop whenever someone wanted to use the phone... AOL... The... Horror...The... Horror... [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aNUr__-VZeQ]

I will admit the games were good, but you can still play them! I reinstalled Populous 3 just a few days ago, still as good as it was back in the day!

Like many things, its nostalgia. Things were always better when you were younger because you filter only the good to the surface, you forget alot of the bad shit from then. I had a friend who played the older RE games, and recently played RE4 (note, this was some time back, but still.) He hadnt played any of the older RE games for a few years before picking up RE4 and he complained just how much better the old RE games were, one of the biggest reasons he stated was that the TPS perspective ruined the game.

Unfortunately for him, I had access to a PS2, and RE2&3. I popped RE2 in, and he played it... for about an hour, than put the controller down and looked shocked. He didnt realize just how awful the controls were. When the nostalgia goggles are on, all older things from or childhood look awesome in comparison to today, but this is not always true.

*Edit*

One little exception, I *STILL* think the older 2D Mario games are better than any of the 3D Mario games. Thats why New Super Mario Bros. is the only reason I still have the Wii hooked up.

Nostalgia is a funny thing. It's why we should not revisit places of happy childhood memories, we remember things in ways that are so very different from the truth.

Gaming is case in point, I play older games from time to time, right now I'm replaying Final Fantasy IX. Now as games go it's not really that old but there are aspects which annoy the crap out of me. It's slow, the menu is slow to move, animations take time (which directly impacts the gameplay in this case, due to the battle system) and the areas are split up into bite size chunks with loading between (very short loading but present nonetheless).

While these things aren't necessarily removed from modern games, they're not around so much either.
Furthermore now we have more fluid controls, with people understanding what works and what doesn't. Better graphics which does make it nicer to play, no question.

Oh and the games of today aren't bad, despite what you may think. CoD? Yeah I'll go with the CoD series being pretty average in most respects, good popcorn fun but nothing innovative and lots of catering to the lowest common denominator. But what about Bioshock? Resident Evil? Demon's Souls? Assassins Creed? They're not bad games, they're good games. They're relatively new, too.

It's just plain nostalgia, we all get it, with games it's just easier to flick back and see how wrong that nostalgia is...

No offense but anyone who says yes is talking out of their ass. Games back then were bland and uninteresting comparedto now adays with plots like go here save chick being as complex as they got and the fact that 90% of all games would be street fighter rip offs

It gets worse.

Also, nostalgia is very powerful. I still think OoT is the best game ever though. I actually didn't get a _that_ big kick out of the NES/SNES. N64 with Zelda did that for me.

Life is like a hurricane, here in Duckburg...

Now that that's out of the way, not really. Life was simpler and easier when I was a kid but I don't think I'd ever want to go back, really. I want the future to be better, not relive the past. Plus, there are some awesome games/movies out now, you just have to look for them.

I can't tell if you are serious or not.

But, yeah i did. Most kinds of music have their respective merits and modern pop is not exempt from that.

And i like bothering people by supporting villefied things. :p

#1: I would keep technology moving forward. As much as I love old games for their nostalgic value, I can tell you that even as a 12-year-old playing Pac-Man, I knew the technology would just continue improving. If I knew that then, why would I want to take that back now?

#2: I would go back in time to when we understood that as "awesome," "radical," "cool," etc., as games are, they neither were the solution to all of life's ills, nor a definition of our entire culture or generation. You have to understand something. The current generation is not the first one to grow up with video games. I was born around the time Pong came out. That was just about 40 years ago. I was there for the first huge video game booms. It was all we thought about at the time. But the current generation has a super-inflated collective ego and a notion that gaming came into being for their own sole benefit, which pretty much ruins any chance at reasonable dialog before it begins. I happen to think that this "fanboi" mindset is the very thing that drives the issues the OP is complaining about. In other words, you guys are asking for what you are getting. You are asking for it through your posturing and your cash.

#3: There are plenty of gaming alternatives. If you're sick of sameness in the big titles, just try out some of the smaller titles. If you're sick of video games in general, try a boardgame or tabletop game.

Video games are not the only entertainment in the world, and they are not the solution to all life's ills. If you keep approaching them as if they are, you are going to continue to be disappointed.

I was born late 70's early 80's, and I didn't play games at all. I lived in a small town in Germany (the name escapes me) but when I moved here in early 2000's, I got a N64 and Majora's Mask. So to answer the question: I don't really care either way, as long as there is good games.

The last thing this industry needs is to take a step backwards.

It does enough of that already without taking a giant leap into the past.
