NV didn't really have a story and Oblivion's story was one I didn't pay much attention because I was only about 13 when I played it.

Oblivion had a story?

Seriously, though, the story was by far the worst part of that game. If it had been just the guild quests and goofing around, it would have been the exact same game to me. So long as the Shivering Isles were still there, the main story could definitely be deleted.

I've never played Fallout: NV, so can't comment on it.

Well define "story" in those games.

Do you mean the main quest, or every single story behind every quest, every character, every random dungeon area, all of the DLCs, the entire setting and its existence and all of the backstory?

How can a game have no story? And if either of those didn't have one it'd have nothing to string the game play together.

I didn't buy Oblivion for the Story. I found myself rather irritated with the story and just went off exploring or doing the side quests. I did eventually finish the story just to get rid of the oblivion portals popping up and ruining my trips through the forest... It was cool but nothing spectacular imo. I found the side quests much more entertaining.

Those games had stories?

Oblivion the only story I cared about was the Dark Brotherhoods one.
And New Vegas.... Well.... Yeah...

I actually stayed completely clear of oblivions story after I'd completed it once, and I've played a lot of hours of the game since then. Ive only played fallout at friends houses so I cant comment on that one.

I don't think I could have played Oblivion without a story. That game is just too big. Without any kind of motivation I would get bored fast.

If it did, I never noticed. I spent a little over 30 hours playing the game before getting bored of it, and if I'd stuck to the main "story", it would've been more like three. It was far less interesting than the random other crap I ran around doing that had no real coherent story to it. There was plenty of backstory available through the setting and the books (which I absolutely could not bring myself to read after having read the far more interesting (to me) ones in The Witcher) and talking to various people on various side quests, but not really a whole lot of active, meaningful, world-changing story progression, at least the way I played the game. Maybe there is a little if you actually bother to do the main plot, but it sure didn't bother to go through any effort to make me care about it. Captain Picard died and wants me to go do...I don't even remember what? I think I'll go stab people and steal stuff from the Mage's Guild to sell it back to them instead. Heh.

My apologies, how can any modern RPG/action game/almost anything that isn't a puzzlegame?
Well don't count puzzle games out of the story contest, Portal 2 had a pretty nice story going on in their, definitely not Mass Effect but better than the CoD story arc of 'Here is some Nazis, shoot them' (or if its MW than replace Nazi with Russian).

Absolutely. I paid the least attention to their 'stories'. I'd like to think that if there weren't any effort put into including a story, their damn facial expressions (or lack thereof) may have been juuuust a bit better.

Yeah, I'd still play NV if there wasn't a main quest. Wouldn't make it any less fun to run around the Mojave with Felicia Day in tow, waiting to punch the shit out of everything.
