When looking for the new NWN MMO rumour I found the following article:
http://www.crispygamer.com/news/index.php/2009-06-09/rumor-atari-and-cryptic-working-on-neverwinter-nights-online-game/

It claims that in 1991, way before Ultima Online, there was an MMO based on NWN. You were only able to play it on AOL and in the beginning it was 6$ per hour. Later they offered it for free and there were more than a 100.000 subscribers, a HUGE number at that time.

What game is so great that you would pay 6$ per hour of play?

If it teleported in hookers, Filet Mignon, and really good cigars.

If hey ever make the MMO I keep having those dreams about, and I desperately need to lose money (for tax purposes, maybe), then... No.

If you play 2 hrs per day on average, then it'd sum up to $360 per month, don't think any MMO would be worth it.

Although I generally prefer when MMOs charge you for hours spent playing rather than requiring paid subscription. Might work out more expensive if you sum everything up, but removes the discomfort of paying for a whole month and ending up playing maybe two Saturdays.

no game is worth paying $6 an hour as most games require a hell of a lot of hours.

No, just no.

How many hours a week would you have to work to cover just the gaming hourly costs!? Let alone food, rent, electric and other bills.

If it was per month or year then it could be worth while, but $6 per hour is just stupid.

Here's the information you need: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neverwinter_Nights_(AOL_game)

This is the interesting part:
The game originally cost USD$6.00 per hour to play. As the years progressed, Internet connection costs dropped, AOL and NWN membership grew, the servers became faster and the hourly player charge declined. As a result of these upgrades, the capacity of each server grew from 50 players in 1991 to 500 players by 1995. Ultimately the game became a free part of the AOL subscriber service.

Near the end of its run in 1997 the game had 115,000 players and typically hosted 2,000 adventurers during prime evening hours, a 4000% increase over 1991.

NO game, even if there was one I would be unable to enjoy it because I would constantly be thinking how much money I'm spending and checking the time to make sure I don't stay on for too long and constantly rushing through things. Doesn't sound like I could enjoy the game at all.

I think the big, well devloped MMOs alongside the good free-to-plays have demonstrated that fees must be kept to a minimum to ensure player support, and $360 a month is on the steep side. It would have to be the best gaming experience of all time, full body immersion style and if they could get that working they would be rolling in cash within weeks, let alone months...

Why would I ever want to? Paying 6$ an hour just to continue playing a game isn't my thing, especially when i can spend 20$ and buy a used copy of Final Fantasy Tactiics A2 and play it for 178 hours (not including all those times I failed that 'five kings' mission).

Just do the math

20$ - 178 hours and counting
1068$ - 178 hours exactly

Uh.. lol, that's like paying minimum wage to a game for the job of entertaining you.. no thanks.

What kind of MMO's do you keep having dreams about? Do they involve Cthulhu? It could mean R'lyeh has surfaced.
