Since you've ETA that RPGs aren't what you meant, and since all my other points have been made, I'll toss out this:
The game industry already has a hard enough time portraying Black People and Women as non-stereotypes. If they included a gay (and you know, clap your hands) main character, there's a rather good chance he'll be less, well Dumbledore (likable, but subtle, like "I once knew this guy...intimately") and more, as someone said "all the worst traits a woman can have."
Now, I don't know what causes some gay men to absorb all these traits, it's not true for all, and probably most of them. But the one that burns the most is the one who doesn't act like a mature, reasonable person, and it's harder for people who've never seen anything else (either due to only seeing tripe with stereotypes, or because they only encountered one or two) to see beyond their initial impressions.
Back to the point, though. Most of the black men I've seen have fallen into stereotype country, as have many women become gun-toting sadists with a "Shut up and follow me or be shot" attitude that would be annoying on anyone, but amuses game developers.
And while we're at it, no more escort or timed missions. If I'm taking someone out of a hostile area, they need to be armed and prepared, or I need to be able to give them armor that keeps them from being one-shotted by a randomly-spawned zombie crow that hasn't hurt me since the tutorial. TIMED MISSIONS, indeed any mission with a set time limit, has to be done with an implicit reason (This mug of mead won't stay hot for long in our wintry zone) and with time to spare if there's something to slow you down (like 10 minutes of OH SH- window. I've seen a lifetime's worth of fission mailed because Charlie Bravo Delta Unit 8 needs me in spot Q in 10 minutes, so that I can be there when the grenade gets tossed in and kills everyone including me for the story.
