The game industry already has a hard enough time portraying Black People and Women as non-stereotypes.
Your right. I would like to see a game with a gay main character, however having a screaming queen in a game based on 'Queer eye for the straight guy' wouldnt satisfy me.

The only real and fair way to portray a gay guy in a video game of the action genre would be to have a background story. It would definitely be a game I would purchase. The problem is more to the fact is the general gaming population ready for a game with a story about a homosexual.

I don't know much about the gaming groups that would play action games, but I am not convinced that many of them would appreciate a gay orientated game. But thats just my opinion.

FYI, I'm gay. Don't worry about offending me, good luck!

Well, I play RE4, so I guess I woul... ok, I'll stop there.

As long as it's a good game, why would I care about what sexual orientation the main character has?

Yep, can't see it making much difference to the way I would play a game plus it'd be a (relatively) unique story seeing as no games company has been brave enough to do it yet.

I played as a female character in mass effect and had a romance with Liara, that counts as gay, right, even though she's an alien?

First off all it would do is just give the gay crowd something else to force their agenda on us with.
Yes. I want to force my agenda of equal rights on your face, smothering you with my freedoms. Eat personal choice, *****.

Seriously, I have never understood grumbling about "homosexual agenda"...its...like grumbling about being forced to play a black character. I mean, they better not just use it as a way to push their black agenda in my face!

As for the topic: I want good characters. A character is a person, from the tip of their head to the bottom of their feet, to their quirks and foibles and their passions. This includes their sexuality, their romantic tendencies, their desires. These things are a large part of what makes us human, and to ignore such a thing would mean that your characters will come off as incomplete.

The reason why Dragon Age's bisexual elf, Zevran, is such a good character is because every bit of his character makes sense and works together. His bisexuality FITS, and feels natural...and so he is a good character.

Soooo...what I really want to see more of is good writing. Good writing will invariably lead to gay characters.

Yeah of course. At least they dont make them sterotypical with high voices and worried about their hair every ten minutes.

Insecure?

OT: No, who gives a shit? I'm not going to emerge after a 2 hour sesh on the game wanting to experiment with men, am I?

Just like if I'm playing Tomb Raider I don't then start dressing as a women (and grunting profusely if I slip over).

Secondly if the main character is that gay that I can tell then he would no doubt be a blatant stereotype whose face I would want to shove in a meat grinder.

If it was very very down played and no big media fuss was made over it then sure, maybe.

Of course I am much more forgiving about lesbian characters but I am a guy so its just how we roll.
Now this is insecure - incidentally, what inspired you to give a reply straight out of the 40s?

Is have a question for the OP, are you asking me if I'd play a game with a gay or lesbian main character or a game where the main character happens to be gay or a lesbian?

There is a vast difference between the two, first is tedious, making a gay dude or a lesbian chick to cash in and being "relevant", it would be brought up at every turn and would end up being annoying as hell.

The second is is interesting, something I'd like to play, if only to see a different prospective on screen for a change.

Honestly sexuality isn't relevant to most games, or even most movies (romances being the exception) these days, they only tag on a "romantic" sub-plot to fill time, most people aren't defined by their sexuality, those that are either straight or not, are most of the time just pillocks.

I would play it as long as it's good. Does the main characters sexual orientation really matter that much that it could put you off a game?

To be honest, if the game is good - and I have enough money, then I don't care what sexuality the character is... as long as it doesn't rub off too much. Because I find effeminate gays quite annoying.

I'm a gay woman and I'm writing a comic book with a lesbian main character. Her sexuality is not even a remote focus of the story, but this detail does have me wondering how the story will be received.
I don't know but just make sure your work doesn't flop because it sucks and you accuse people of being ignorant when it really is your work that needs improvement. That just worsens the gay cause. Actually, I think if most gay people did not shove their gayness into the faces of others and yell ignorant when someone asks them to stop, gays would be much much much better received in society - just as all the replies on this thread suggest.

I am pretty sure if I went and shoved my straightness in gay peoples faces and went on and on about how great it is to be straight they would as me to stop as well - and they would have every right to.
I think I can safely say for the majority on this thread:

Shut up. You twat.

If you're that insecure about your own sexuality then maybe you need have a good long think instead of acting like a total c*nt.

Do you not like black people when they shove their "blackness" in your face?

Or Jews because they shove their "Jewishness" in your face?

Considering you don't want people going on about how great being gay is (how's it different exactly?), you're making an awful lot of comments implying you think being straight is great.

So to reiterate my point, fuck off you moron.

Oh, and I've reported you several times.

many games were the characters could be gay, for one i never notice gordon freeman making any moves on the girls, nether to the guys, but for all we know he could be gay.

basically any game were the main character isn't obviously straight could be gay or bi. and i don't think it matters, if its not a rpg, your generic shooter guy could be gay straight bi or a hermaphrodite and it wouldn't make a difference in the game. and for rpgs, i think we need to be seeing more gay and lesbians, they apparently make up 10% of the population, but in 99% of the rpgs out there with romantic elements there never a gay one. i wouldn't say force a person in a rpg to have a boy friend or a girl friend, but if your going to have a rpg were romance is a option, a gay one also needs to be a option, and should include more gay npcs, and not the stereotype kind.

It would be an interesting storyline if it was done tastefully and a ridiculous joke if it wasn't.

They'd never allow a game like that, would they?

I think I already have a few times. Not just Bioware games that support homosexual romances but games featuring a female protagonist who (just for kink affect) happens to prefer female companionship.

And, hey, if you ever played Gandolf in a LOTR game...

Nah, I'm confusing him with Dumbledoor, hehe.
Actually, you're not wrong =P Assuming you're playing one of the movieverse games, since Ian McKellen is gay.

Also, if here was a Wire game, I would totally play as Omar =3

I'd love to see a generic FPS game where you play the generic Space Marine / Gun Shooter Man character that we've all learned to expect from the genre, except he's gay, and the plot is that alien terrorists have kidnapped your boyfriend or something, and now you have to kill a lot of people and make explosions happen.

EDIT: FUCK YES OMAR!
