Look I get that not all gay/lesbian types are that way. It's the flamboyant, inevitable flaunting of it that would piss me off. The character can be whatever he wants and hell, it can be a central or relevant part of the story, all I ask is that it's done tastefully rather than doing it for some massive degree of shock value so as to say "Hay look faux newz and Gurge Buish! Look wut I did! Get pissed off at me and start a huge nationwide flame war!"colourcodedchaos said:As a pansexual transgirl, anything other than an answer of 'yes' would be most hypocritical. And incorrect.
As incorrect as, say, this statement:
Which assumes that all gay guys are prissy, feminine fops. That's a bit like saying all straight guys are beer-swilling, stocky louts who fight in the streets of a Saturday night. Patently false, no?Frankydee said:Probably not.
I find I have a problem playing flamboyant and irritating characters and having a gay lead guy would probably irritate the piss out of me.
It doesn't really matter, as long as the story isn't condescending. Personally, I don't want the gay character to receive a pat on the head and an 'It's OK, sweetie, you can be whatever you want to be' in the sickly tones of a Disney film.

Why not have a gay character just because?
Aren't all games having straight characters just because?
...grimsprice said:I would prefer if the main character was relatable to me... Just you know... that would be nice. Thats why there are no gay main characters. Because its not the majority of the audience.
Because its so fucking easy to relate to a video game characters.

How did you get your job as a gun toting space marine cowboy in new york city working for the mob?
To defend this position, making Solid Snake gay would have changed alot. Okay maybe not to slash fiction and rumors apart from compounding them, but if he HADNT hit on Mei Ling in MGS1 it just wouldn't have been the same for me. Snake is supposed to be a relatable main character, an every man that isn't so every man after all. He's one of the prime examples of where sexuality mattered some. Everyone could relate to his falling in love with Meryl and it was a massively important factor in his relationship with the Colonel.
I just imagined any game released again but all they changed was the characters sexuality. That'd be the most unecessary special edition everSpacefly said:Not if the character being gay was the only unique thing about it...
I want no flames in here, my friend. Topic is about gays in computer games so we talk a bit about the whole issue as well.Xojins said:Yeah, I know you're entitled to your opinion and whatever, but fuck you. That comment blew my mind.
"Gay sex doesn't create babies so there must be some defect." Since when has sex solely been about reproduction? Humans are one of the only species that have sex for pleasure, and not just reproduction. So that argument goes out the window.
I'm confused as to why you even posted, especially since you knew that it would likely make someone mad and start some kind of flame war.
Edit:
OT: Maybe we should try fixing how people look at homosexuals before trying to put them into more games. I read through most of the posts, and many people say something along the lines of "As long as he's not one of those stereotypical gays." That's fine, I don't like those guys either, but I think it's a problem that that's the first thing people think of when homosexuality is mentioned. Also, as someone else mentioned, they already struggle with portraying Blacks and women without overwhelming stereotype.
Also if you're one of the people that said they would feel too uncomfortable with playing a game with a homosexual character, that's pretty pathetic to be honest.
Oh I accept that biologically the main point of sex is to procreate, but in today's world, it's mostly about pleasure (save for some societies, probably). I would go so far as to say that most people (at least young people) who have sex have no intention or desire to have children, hence the use of condoms/birth control. They do it for the pleasure. So by your argument, there must be something defective with them.cieply said:I want no flames in here, my friend. I explained why I feel uncomfortable. I like to get into the role I'm playing in the game and being gay would make it hard for me as men don't turn me on.
As for the "sex not for making babies" - I'd like to do it in a socratean way of asking you questions but unfortunately It's a forum and my english could be not sufficient for this. Still I'll try to explain to You my strain of thought - sex is a way of securing continuity of our species. We get fun along the way, sure, but if suddenly the entire world would turn homosexual, humans would extinct. Therefore, the main role of sex is procreation, pleasure is a secondary use that is supposed to lure us into the whole "making babies" business so that we survive. Once you accept that, it'll become obvious that there is something wrong with homosexuals. It's a harmless deviation that poses no real threat to humanity, just one of million things that can go wrong in a human but still allow him to prosper and live happily. Still, it's not normal.
Now I know you won't agree with me. The only way I ever convince intelligent people of this belief is, as I said before, through questions. Still I wand to assure you I am not a troll looking for some warm flames. I try to express my opinions in a manner as civilized and polite as possible.
And as always I hear "fuck you" from people who think of themselves better than me, lowly homophobic scum.
