If a game has a gay option, I've already explored it. It's more disturbing to me to have no option than 'too many',however. There should be more points on the Kinsey Scale or Klein Grid to explore but in a less clumsy way than games have been doing so far.
Now, if the character couldn't quite be gay or straight because what looks like a she has a very obvious 'big floppy wang'(demonic or otherwise) but also had the old vertical Mick Jagger kisser down there, that might be an honest challenge to most people's sexuality (though not mine!).
Games are already barely 'heterosexual', anyway, with all of it's abundance of perfectly toned half-naked men hauling around and shooting off big guns in each other's faces and grappling with each other in a no-girls allowed atmosphere most of the time since the arcade glory days. The 'goilz' seem to get thrown in to prove how macho and totally not gay they game characters (and thus target audience)isn't...sort of like Ring Girls in Boxing or cheerleaders in other sports...or Smurfette.
Boys Love, Brokeback Mountain, you name it, it hasn't been hurt by a heaping helping of homoeroticism, so it would just get a bit of play on Gaymer.com then be quickly forgotten about unless the gay(only)protagonist were particularly noteworthy.
There is going to be yet more full frontal male nudity in an upcoming game (or two)that noone will protest.
(I'd like to point out the FFN in Three Dirty Dwarves, Power Instinct-Japanese version, and the statues in CastleVania:Symphony of the Night, all of which were T-rated, didn't cause a stir.)
I'd say that it's a safe bet that if one were to make a game about ancient Greece(historical or mythological with Heroic Nudity and all)that people would laud it for being 'progressive'and empowering...so long as the women don't wear revealing togas or anything.
Now, immodest women will always get people whining. That's what the uproar in Mass Effect was about after all.
So, yes, people are past ready to play a mandatory man-dating man. The leading lesbians are a bit or a risky proposition though, especially if there is any nudity or 'nudity' involved.
