Same thing applies to female characters as well. I want a strong heterosexual character because I want someone to emulate. I wouldn't want her to be gay because as a heterosexual, I would not want to emulate a homosexual because that is not my preference.

Call it petty, but it is my point of view.
So, are you saying that being a homosexual means that a character would have no admirable traits to be emulated then?

Wilfred Owen was likely gay but there's many traits of his I'd gladly emulate.

I've played Ai Cho Aniki.

Speaking as a heterosexual female, as long as as I don't have to watch two guys fondling each other or twisting each other's nipples or something equally/even more awkward, I don't care.

No. Actually, I did not say that at all, but I was prepared to be persecuted for having a different opinion when I posted on this thread.

Let me get a little techinical on you.
Psychologically, we as humans will want to emulate things that we wants to be. This is a proven fact.

As a heterosexual, I will be more likely to emulate a fellow heterosexual than a homosexual. They share my same feelings towards the male race and I'd honestly have a problem connecting on a deeper level with a homosexual character in a game because of this fact.

Does that make me homophobic? No, but I'm sure you'd beg to differ.

Does that mean that I think all homosexuals are evil and have no good or admirable traits? Absolutely not.

Now, who's next?

Oh dear lord. I nearly stopped reading at the first sentence. To it, I respond, "oh, shut up."
To the second, I'll respond "don't be patronising".

I didn't call you Hitler, Captain Defensive, I pointed out a gap in your argument, nothing more.

Brilliant, well I hope you are ready for the answer.

Appeal.
I'd much rather play a game with a handsome, strong and heterosexual male character than a gay one. Why? Because although I know in my mind that he's only fictional, in my some dark corner of my mind, I'd think "Hmm, he's handsome, I'd like to be the [main female love interest] that he's after"

Same thing applies to female characters as well. I want a strong heterosexual character because I want someone to emulate. I wouldn't want her to be gay because as a heterosexual, I would not want to emulate a homosexual because that is not my preference.

I won't call it petty at all.
It's a perfectly respectable motivation, and you explained it lucidly and to the point.
Now, I disagree with the fundamental idea that emulation won't be successful unless you share these traits with your digital alter ego, but that's a matter of psychological affinity which I'm not competent enough to speculate in.

Me! *raises hand*

i wouldnt say it made you homophobic, but i would say to me you sound a little hung up on sexuality.

could you give some examples of games you play that this emulation would be ruined by the main characters sexuality?

Hehe, I had to fix you quote. You're clearly so fired up, you cannot quote me correctly. I think you are the one who needs to be calm. You quoted my first two sentences, which had no meat of argument in them, and based your response on those?

I'm not being patronising, I was trying when I said "Let me get techinical" to not start up with psychology and sound like a jackass. ;)

Calm down.

I think I can safely say for the majority on this thread:

Shut up. You twat.

If you're that insecure about your own sexuality then maybe you need have a good long think instead of acting like a total c*nt.

Do you not like black people when they shove their "blackness" in your face?

Or Jews because they shove their "Jewishness" in your face?

Considering you don't want people going on about how great being gay is (how's it different exactly?), you're making an awful lot of comments implying you think being straight is great.

So to reiterate my point, fuck off you moron.

Oh, and I've reported you several times.
I am Black and I am extremely offended by your post. Please do not compare the suffering, torture, and oppression of a people for years because of the color of their skin to the gay plight - where that is a DEVIANCY from the NORMAL (sexuality, ideology, morality, etc).

Or to Jews who suffered a completely different extermination based on their RELIGION.

As far as I know sexuality is neither religion nor race - please don't ever compare those.

Also what if I wanted to have sex with sheep? or wanted to have sex with my family? I am sure I could find others with the same sexual desires... So would that make us a minority being oppressed? - because laws and morals taught in school teach against those things. Should we then promote bestiality and incest? should we? I mean... I can still promote the human race THANKS TO SCIENCE (not my own abilities) and artificially impregnate a willing woman who would have my baby.... so whats wrong with bestiality and incest? Why not have a game who's main character likes to have sex with his parents and his dog??

Edit: As far as reporting:
I would not report you because I am not afraid of what you have to say. BUT if you look at everything I posted - non were personal attacks - and I give arguments supporting my OPINION.
YOU on the other hand attacked me personally, and viciously and without reason or argument behind it and basically just tried to shut me up.

Also I have not sworn once. You swear like its mandatory - please don't.
Bigot.

That's pretty much all I have to say, I'm just typing this out so it isn't a one-word post.

Of couse, and fair question.

Honestly, I haven't played any to date. But I also have only played and picked games that I would find personally appealling in the first place. So sadly, I can't answer that question very well because since I've only played games that appeal to me, I haven't run into any problems. Except GTAIV, but that wasn't a problem of sexuality, that just a problem of just a terrible game...

Also, to counter point something you said. "you sound a little hung up on sexuality."

If threads like these are continiously made... aren't we all too hung up on sexuality?

hmmm, i dunno bout all, tbh: i feel i'm prob the most open minded person i know and sexuality is no real issue to me other then picking a partner, my main reason in lookin at such topics is an interest in others opinions.

i know it doesnt seem very open minded to show my disgust in the opinions of people such as Lightnr, but no matter how open minded i claim to be, what he said sickened me.

Judging from people's reactions here I'd say there would be more controversy about this mundane detail than whether or not the game whatever would be good or not, I'm sure developers have deemed some popular characters homosexual but have never really published it to the masses or let it leave the cutting room floor.

Nonetheless I would not mind if I knew my character was gay. Aslong as it did not needlessly delve into this idea of pushing the edge of video games by highlighting it all the time in the game or having a mass media frenzy campaign before the release of the game. I would not mind if it was mentioned once or twice in the game. But if the whole game centers around it in some stupid way with over the top sex scenes or prejudice it would be stupid.

It depends on the game. If it was full of plot i wouldn't really wanna follow the romances of action hero Gaylord Fruitcake in something like Drakes Fortress

I have in RPG games where I believed my character suited being gay.

So, no, I'd have no problem at all. I really wouldn't care at all. Even the gay sex-scene I wound up in on Dragon Age: Origins didn't really phase me any more than a normal sex-scene.

Does it make a difference to a lot of people?

Yeah, whatever, I see characters as the lead in a movie, not as a personal avatar. If the game was purely based on the character going round trying to pick up dudes I think I'd give it a miss but as long as the game isn't based on hardcore man love I don't think I'd care.

Hmm...so...would this be girl on girl action? :p

...No. I actually consider it weird how most guys seem to have a thing for the whole lesbian scene. I mean...they're lesbians.

Nah, my flirty rogue ended up doing the other flirty rogue. They had so much in common it seemed right for the two to at least flirt. Then it got sexual in the dialogue, so I continued it. Then it got downright hilarious. Then the sex-scene. I actually kind of laughed at one point, when I realsied the two looked so similar it looked like they were screwing a mirror.

1st: damn.
2nd: It's not the lesbian "scene" guys have a thing for, it's a woman engaged in sexual activity...and another woman engaged in sexual activity, no stubbly face or another guys schlong to look at. It's a film, it's not like you're going to be able to haver sex with them anyway so sexual preference is irrelevant.
3rd: When it comes to RL they aren't necessarily lesbians, I've known a few straight girls that will happily get off with a close friend because they know it attracts a lot of attention from the boys, and a couple that were more than happy to go all the way when coked up enough.

I would much rather play as a gay character for once, since I am gay.

I am getting kind of tired of being forced to watch heterosexual romance constantly. Persona 3 was almost unbearable due to this.

1st: I get that reaction a lot.
2nd: I think I put myself in the shoes of the guy; with lesbian stuff I can't imagine having girly-bits so I just don't find it attractive. Maybe I've just got a weird way of looking at things...o.o
3rd: That, I knew. I doubt most 'lesbians' in porn films are lesbian. Girls kissing each other to get attraction from men? Holy crap. I mean, it makes sense...I just didn't think...That's so weird, when you think of it. Attracting men by...arousing women?

I think I've just found a new perspective...Hmmm...
